BERN - Die Ärztinnen und Ärzte für Umweltschutz reagieren besorgt auf die heute veröffentlichte schweizweite Studie zur Wirkung von Handy-Strahlung.

Handystrahlung verändert im Schlaf die Hirnströme. Das hat ein nationales Forschungsprogramm zum Thema Mobilfunk-Emissionen ergeben (Blick.ch berichtete). Zwar konnten die Forscher keinen Zusammenhang zwischen dieser Tatsache und gesundheitlichen Problemen belegen. Die Ärztinnen und Ärzte für Umweltschutz (AeFU) sind aber trotzdem besorgt. [?]

Die AeFU raten zur persönlichen Vorsorge und empfehlen, so oft wie möglich Geräte mit Kabeln zu verwenden. Für die mobile Kommunikation raten sie zu Vorrichtungen, die es ermöglichen, das Handy nicht direkt am Kopf oder Körper zu benutzen (zum Beispiel Freisprechanlagen). Besonders Kinder sollten gemäss den Ärzten aus Vorsorgegründen das Handy möglichst selten benutzen.[?]

The Medical Perspective on Environmental Sensitivities

May I suggest for further insight into the sensitivity known as EHS reading the comprehensive document 'The Medical Perspective on Environmental Sensitivities' by the Canadian Human Rights Commission on Environmental Sensitivities http://www.chrc-ccdp.gc.ca/sites/default/files/envsensitivity_en.pdf [ http://www.hrinfodesk.com/preview.asp?article=22802 ]. It has many reference pages of research on EHS used in its examination from top scientists and medical doctors around the world. Many conditions in past such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and chemical sensitivity were once thought to be psychological also, however, we now know they are legitimate health conditions with very real and debilitating effects. Most people with EHS have gone for years feeling ill before discovering the source of their problem, and are very aware of what brings on ill symptoms for them, in this case electromagnetic radiation usually from wireless devices. But for those who are sceptical, there are tell tale biomarkers that cannot be faked or simply induced with thought such as increased levels of: C- reactive protein, cortisol, GH, norepinephrine, and histamine; altered cerebral blood flow; influx of calcium into mast cells; tachycardia; rouleaux formation (stacking) of blood cells; ECG and EEG changes, as well as subjective data. This is obviously not just a figment of the imagination. Their reality is, they feel better when in a clean environment (no or very little RF/MW radiation) and quickly deteriorate when they are being irradiated whether they are aware of the source or not. Who are any of us to tell them to suck it up and live with it? Would we accept that attitude if it were our child suffering?

Well for me, it is my child. My son is crushed he cannot attend the middle school (Dunsmuir) in our catchment next year with all his friends, where they also have a soccer academy (been playing soccer since he was 5 yrs. old) due to the Wi-Fi that blankets the entire school with microwave radiation that gives him headaches, tachycardia (speeding heart rate), fatigue, and nausea. I had a tour of the school, they have two computer labs that are plugged in for power and could easily be wired for internet, but instead my son will have to go out of area to a school without his friends and without the special soccer program that he would love, why? all so that the computers can have no wires to connect to the internet. I pray we can find a school without Wi-Fi, if not, what will our options as parents be? Tell me how any of this is ethical or equitable for any child that already has to deal with so much. For the sake of children like mine and Karen s, please take the time to research the real and growing sensitivity of EHS, but also to further understand that ALL children, whether sensitive or not, are being harmed with cumulative exposure to microwave radiation, the very same frequency of radiation used in microwave ovens only less powerful, but over many many years! There is much wrong in the world if we as parents are unwilling to look at the mounting evidence available from many different and credible sources (independent and free from industry funding) that clearly affirms children should avoid all forms of radiation wherever possible to reduce their risk at the most vulnerable stage of their lives. Ignorance is not bliss, and our children will pay the biggest price for our mistake if we continue to ignore what science is already elucidating.

For me, it is so very odd to read the excellent article ['Ban mobile phones and wireless networks in schools, say European leaders', http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/mobile-phones/8514380/Ban-mobile-phones-and-wireless-networks-in-schools-say-European-leaders.html ] when I, at the very same time, nowadays constantly is being harassed, threathened and soon severely hampered in my activities. The world is not functioning as it should, and some of the intellectual strong-holds have been invaded by greedy commercial forces turning universities into puppets on strings.

I especially see the opposition towards people with the functional impairment electrohypersensitivity. The situation there is now very much like a medical pogrom. When I entered science I thought my task should be to listen to, help, respect and support people in distress. Not to chase them away.

Finally, from the Telegraph article I understand that our Benevento, London and Seletun Statements have made a big difference. For that, I am very proud and very glad!

My strength and time is now running out. Please, keep up the excellent work for the future - it is badly needed.

This Resolution was approved by members of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (RNCNIRP) at its Committee session on 3 March 2011. The Resolution evolved from scientific statements adopted by RNCNIRP in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009, taking into account contemporary views and actual scientific data. The Resolution represents a viewpoint of the professional scientific community and is meant for public dissemination, for the consumers of the mobile telecommunications services, as well as for the legislative and executive authorities who develop and implement health protection, environmental, communication, scientific and safety policies.

ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS FROM MOBILE PHONES: HEALTH EFFECT ON CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS

The world-wide dissemination of mobile telecommunications has resulted in new sources of large-scale population exposure to radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) since 2000. At present, mobile phones dominate among the mobile communication services used by the population. By the end of 2010, there were 219.3 million mobile phone SIM cards registered in Russian network operators [1]. The mobile phone penetration rate (expressed as the number of SIM cards registered per 100 people) has reached to about 150% in Russia, and exceeded 200% in the Moscow Region. According to ROSSTAT (Federal State Statistics Service of Russian Federation), there were about 15 million children and teenagers (ages from 5 to 19) living in Russia at the end of 2010 [2]. They all are presumed to be a target group for marketing for telecommunication service providers, mobile phone vendors and others. Prevention childhood and juvenile diseases from exposure to EMF sources is of paramount social and economic importance. It is one of the bases for public health policy for the nation in the near and long-term future. This problem has been already recognized by the international community: in May 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) will be organizing the Second International Conference: 'Non-ionizing Radiation and Children s Health' dedicated to health protection of children exposed to EMF sources of various frequency ranges. It is WHO s opinion that a 'child is more vulnerable to environmental factors' [3]. WHO considers that studies aimed at determining if there are risks to children s health from exposure to EMF is a top priority.

By forcing wireless technologies on every single Canadian, especially Wi-fi within all schools and installation of smart meters on every house and business, the federal and provincial governments made these decisions with big business to use every baby, child, and adult in our country as test guinea pigs. The public was not consulted. Scientific studies used and quoted by the governments are supported and biased in favour of the businesses manufacturing these technologies. Any reports by scientists outside of these big businesses, which have been warning of serious impacts to human health for years now, are being ignored and hidden.

Parents fighting for the right to protect their children from being unwilling test subjects are ignored, ridiculed, and shut out of voting against wireless installations in their children s schools by school boards.

Electricity customers are trying to fight against the installation of smart meters on their homes, in their neighbourhoods, and in their communities. But the federal government has failed to update Canadian health standards for protection of its citizens, under the Canadian Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health, by allowing Canada to continue to be renowned world-wide for its weak and outdated standards. And the provincial government of British Columbia changed the law so that BC Hydro is no longer accountable to the B.C. Utilities Commission in order to speed up implementation of smart meter technology. British Columbians were not consulted and had no input into these plans.

At present, individuals are trying to deal with schools and utility companies on their own. They are demanding other options. Some school boards/utility providers refuse this outright while others say they will get back to the parent/customer and that they 'may' offer options.

If you were a customer of any kind of business and were told that something was the latest fashion, you have to buy it, and that s all that is available. And, by the way, the manufacturer says that it s a perfectly safe product. What would you do? Would you just say, 'Oh, OK.'?

The citizens of Canada are customers of utility companies. If we are not happy with a product or the way a business is being run or the way we are being treated as the customer, we don t have to accept this behaviour from anyone or any company. The solution is simple. Thanks but no thanks. Your service and product are no longer wanted or required.

The situation for Canada s children in the school system is more grave. They cannot refuse 'service' and are totally vulnerable to their environment. It is the parents who must speak up for them and take action to protect them. That is their job.

I believe that governments and businesses have forgotten that all Canadians are their customers. If the citizens of Canada and British Columbia get angry enough about having their human rights taken away from them (to do their own research into and make their own personal decisions about what they believe is healthy for themselves and their family), the governments and businesses will be in trouble. Parents can decide to take action and withdraw their children out of all schools that are exposing their children for 6 hours/day, 5 days/week, for 13+ years. Utility customers can stop receiving and paying for electricity and completely remove themselves from all ramifications of wireless smart meter technology (i.e. fires, explosions, constant electromagnetic field exposure, enormous debts to replace analog meters, promised future rate increases, control of use from utility HQ, and high probability of law suit debts against utility companies which will be paid for by the customer). It s easy, they can just go off-the-grid. Unfortunately, because most utility services are provided by monopolies, customers cannot shop for the best deal.

Canadians have been laid back too long. Government spending and decision-making is totally out of control. Big business is telling its customers that they have to buy a certain product and there is no price control on that product. You have to pay what they say.

It s time for Canadians to do what we have done in the past: stand up for ourselves, be strong, help one another, and use our own intelligence to make our own decisions. The individual has a lot of power if we join together and just say 'No' and 'Stop'. The baby boomer population is enormous. We have the experience to stand up for what we believe in. It s time to do so again.

Are you going to do your jobs and protect the citizens of your country and province? Or do we have to stand up and say 'No', we will not participate in this craziness.

You both have the power to stop the smart meter program and curtail rampant wireless technologies. You both have the power to upgrade our Canadian health standards and bring them up-to-date and in-line with the realities of technology in 2011. Wireless technologies are bombarding the population and it is only because the EMR and EMFs are invisible that people aren t screaming bloody murder about it. What will happen when 50% or more Canadians become ill with radiation sickness? The 'estimate' for electrohypersensitivity (EHS) in the general population is at least 35% mild and 3-5% extreme right now. Where will these people live when smart meters are everywhere? What happens if 50% or more of the population develop extreme EHS? Will we have to stop using electricity?

Please, do the honourable thing. Protect the citizens of Canada and British Columbia. Stop wireless smart meters and proliferation of wireless technologies.

Umweltrecht/Verbandsklage: Klagerechte von Umweltverbänden erweitert

Europäischer Gerichtshof stärkt Zugang zu deutschen Gerichten

Der Europäische Gerichtshof (EuGH) hat mit einem heute (12. Mai 2011) verkündeten Urteil die Klagerechte von Umweltverbänden erweitert. Das Umwelt-Rechtsbehelfsgesetz (UmwRG), das seit Dezember 2006 anerkannten Umweltvereinigungen den Zugang zu Gerichten ermöglicht, setzt danach die Vorgaben des europäischen Rechts nicht vollständig um. Deutschland muss nun das UmwRG an das europäische Recht anpassen. Bis zum Inkrafttreten der Gesetzesänderung können sich anerkannte Umweltvereinigungen zur Begründung ihrer Klagerechte unmittelbar auf europäisches Recht berufen.

Bundesumweltminister Norbert Röttgen begrüßte, dass mit dem Urteil jetzt Rechtsklarheit herrsche: 'Es stellt sich immer mehr heraus, dass die frühzeitige Beteiligung von Bürgern und Verbänden bei großen Infrastrukturvorhaben am Ende der Akzeptanz und damit der Realisierbarkeit dient. Das sollten wir bei der Umsetzung des Urteils berücksichtigen.'

Nach Ansicht des EuGH wird der Zugang von Umweltverbänden zu Gerichten in Deutschland unzulässig eingeschränkt. Anerkannte Umweltvereinigungen können bisher nur Verletzungen derjenigen Umweltvorschriften rügen, die auch betroffene Bürgerinnen und Bürger zu einer Klage berechtigen würden (sogenannte 'subjektive Rechte'). Damit gibt es bislang keine Rechtsschutzmöglichkeiten gegen die Verletzung von Vorschriften, die die Umwelt als solche schützen, beispielsweise Vorsorgeregelungen im Immissionsschutzrecht oder weite Teile des Gewässerschutzrechts. Das europäische Recht verlangt jedoch nach Ansicht des EuGH einen weitergehenden Zugang zu Gerichten in Umweltangelegenheiten. Dem Urteil zufolge müssen Umweltverbände zumindest alle für die Zulassung eines Vorhabens maßgeblichen Umweltvorschriften vor Gericht geltend machen können, die auf Recht der Europäischen Union basieren.

Das Urteil des EuGH erging auf Vorlage des Oberverwaltungsgerichts Nordrhein-Westfalen. Bei dem Gericht ist eine Klage des BUND Nordrhein-Westfalen gegen die Zulassung eines Steinkohlekraftwerks in Lünen anhängig.

The Daily Mail article on the bees is closed for further comment but I am pasting in two comments that I made earlier. They pretty much sum up the situation in less than 2000 characters.

1. Why our bees are dying

I am a scientist who has worked for many years on the biological effects of electromagnetic fields.

The bees' problem lies in a substance called cryptochrome, which is present in every living plant and animal cell where it is part of their body clocks. Bees use the sun for navigation and need their body clocks to compensate for its changing position throughout the day.

Cryptochrome is also affected by magnetic fields and birds and insects also use it for navigation in the Earth s field. Because of its extreme sensitivity to magnetic fields, both functions of cryptochrome are badly disrupted by the electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones and their base stations.

They are simultaneously deprived of both of their means of navigation, become stressed and disoriented and may not be able to find their way home.

Also, animal immune systems are governed by the body clock (they work best at night) and these too fail, making them more susceptible to pathogens. The perfect storm.

2. What will happen if the bees die out?

Many of our most valuable crops are bee pollinated. Without the bees, they will not set seed and die out.

Even our cereals, which are wind pollinated, are not safe since they do not host the friendly nitrogen fixing bacteria needed for sustainable agriculture. They would depend instead on mined fertilizers or the use of fossil fuels to make them from the nitrogen in the air. Neither is sustainable.

Also, cereals on their own do not give a balanced diet. In particular, they are deficient in vitamin C. If we had to depend on them alone, there would be a mass outbreak of scurvy, where vitamin C deficiency stops our bodies making connective tissue. This leads to a very slow and painful death.

Any government or vested interest that does not take this seriously will have a lot to answer for. Ironically, most other animals make their own vitamin C and would be spared.

'In 1996 I was promoted to Sales Manager at work and issued with a mobile phone. My job required me to use it heavily and after a few months of getting the phone I had to visit my GP as I was suffering from severe headaches. The doctor advised me that they were probably caused by driving long distances for work and to take painkillers. The headaches persisted, accompanied by fatigue and memory loss. I was given five years to live without surgery so underwent an invasive nine-hour operation. I wouldn t use my phone after that and was made redundant. I am completely deaf in my left ear, which affects my balance, and still get headaches and facial twitches. I find it difficult to be in large groups or noisy environments which leaves me feeling isolated. I have since found out that the phone companies know that there s evidence that mobile phones might cause brain tumours. I?m angry that they don t warn the public. As my phone was a Nokia, I have contacted them but they won t answer my questions.'

A new UK Charity, Mobilewise, has been launched to do what the Stewart Report unsucessfully asked the Government to do - namely to properly inform young people, their parents and teachers about the possible health hazards from mobile phone use and how to use them more safely.

Finally, another expert specialising in clinical medicine and oncology confirmed, on the basis of the findings of biological and clinical analysis of several hundred French patients describing themselves as 'electrosensitive', that a syndrome of intolerance to electromagnetic fields (SIEMF) does exist and that those people are not feigning illness or suffering from psychiatric disorders'.

Council of Europe calls for dramatic reduction in EMF exposure

A new Council of Europe Committee Resolution calls for a dramatic reduction in human exposure to EMFs and microwave radiation from mobile phones and other wireless devices.
