American Cancer Society Trivializes Cancer Risks: Blatant Conflicts of Interest

The May 6 report by the President's Cancer Panel is well-documented. It warns of scientific evidence on avoidable causes of cancer from exposure to carcinogens in air, water, consumer products, and the workplace. It also warns of hormonal risks from exposure to Bisphenol-A (BPA) and other toxic plastic contaminants, says Samuel S. Epstein, M.D., Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition (CPC). Some of the more startling realities in the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) and the "non-profit" American Cancer Society's (ACS) long-standing failure to prevent a very wide range of cancers are illustrated by their soaring increases from 1975 to 2005. The shocking statistics on the vast increase in malignant melanoma of the skin, thyroid cancer, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, testicular cancer, ovary cancer and breast cancer are documented. Criticisms by the American Cancer Society that the President's Cancer Panel's report exaggerates avoidable cancer risk s, reflect reckless indifference, besides narrow self-interest, warns Dr. Epstein. The ACS's indifference to cancer prevention also reflects major conflicts of interest with regard to public relations, Dr. Epstein emphasizes.

HESA Testimony on Radio Frequency Radiation and Health


Dear Members of HESA,

For several years I have been sending scientific studies to the Minister of Health, and members of Health Canada in an effort to have Safety Code 6 reviewed. I always receive the same letter back which says that Health Canada has reviewed all evidence and has concluded that there is no evidence that Safety Code 6 is outdated or inadequate; that all evidence shows that there is no harm at levels below that permitted by Safety Code 6. This despite directors of Health Canada, including Beth Pieterson, having committed to making revisions should any evidence of harm be presented.

Below is one of many submissions I've made, this with 5 studies showing cellular and genetic damage due to exposure to radiation at very low levels of radiation which are mere fractions of those currently allowed. As you can also see, I have copied various people at different levels in Health Canada and well as the Auditor General's department, asking for someone to take this information seriously. Sadly no one has.

As time passes, more people are becoming exposed to very high levels of this pollutant. What is especially distressing is that when I and others who are concerned try to raise the issue with groups such as school boards and hospitals, they contact Health Canada and are told that there is no danger. Therefore, no precautions are taken such as removing WiFi from classrooms or transmitters from rooftops. Not only is Health Canada not protecting its citizens but it is preventing them from taking steps to protect themselves. It does appear that there is no reason for Health Canada except to give us a false sense of security.

Please consider the evidence presented last week from independent experts and that from other experts which I am forwarding below. We ask that Canadians, especially our children, at least be given the same level of protection from radiation as people in other countries.

The Minister of Health for Canada

Dear Madam Minister,

Last week I sent you the following along with 3 studies concerning the Blood Brain Barrier :
"In June, 2008, I submitted a petition to the Auditor General charging Health Canada with failure to acknowledge independently funded scientific research which, by and large, shows harm from electromagnetic radiation at levels drastically below those allowed by Safety Code 6. I asked for answers, which I did not receive, to explain why many other developed countries, like Sweden, France, Italy, Russia and even China have much stricter guidelines which restrict exposures to 1% of what is allowed by Canada's. The respondent for Health Canada stated, in November 2008, that if/when credible studies are provided, immediate revision of Safety Code 6 would be made, and kept reiterating that there is no evidence of harm from levels of exposures permitted by the code."

Following are 5 more studies demonstrating severe, consistent and irreversible damage to DNA after exposure to electromagnetic radiation at non-thermal levels. Safety Code 6 does not protect against non-thermal radiation, only thermal. Health Canada maintains there are no "credible" health effects at the non-thermal level. Please look at these studies done by independent, non-industry-funded scientists.

1) REFLEX Report, (December 2004) Risk Evaluation of Potential Environmental Hazards From Low Frequency Electromagnetic Field Exposure Using Sensitive in vitro Methods, A project funded by the European Union under the programme "Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources" .

"Twelve institutes in seven countries have found genotoxic effects and modified expressions on numerous genes and proteins after Radio frequency and extremely low frequency EMF exposure at low levels, below current international safety guidance, to living cells in-vitro. These results confirm the likelihood of long-term genetic damage in the blood and brains of users of mobile phones and other sources of electromagnetic fields. The idea behind the REFLEX study was to attempt replicate damage already reported to see if the effects were real and whether, or not, more money should be spent of research into the possible adverse health effects of EMF exposure. They concluded that in- vitro damage is real and that it is important to carry out much more research, especially monitoring the long-term health of people."

2) Diem et al [2005] exposed human fibroblasts and rat granulosa cells to mobile phone signal (1800 MHz; SAR 1.2 or 2 W/kg; different modulations; during 4, 16 and 24 h; intermittent 5 min on/10min off or continuous). RFR exposure induced DNA single and double-strand breaks as measured by the comet assay. Effects occurred after 16 h exposure in both cell types and after different mobile-phone modulations. The intermittent exposure showed a stronger effect than in the continuous exposure.

3) Paulraj and Behari [2006] reported an increase in single strand breaks in brain cells of rats after 35 days of exposure to 2.45 and 16.5 GHz fields at 1 and 2.01 W/kg.

4) Phillips et al. [1998] found increase and decrease in DNA strand breaks in cells exposure to various forms of cell phone radiation.

5) Sun et al. [2006] reported an increase in DNA single strand breaks in human lens epithelial cells after 2 hrs of exposure to 1.8 GHz field at 3 and 4 W/kg. The DNA damages caused by 4 W/kg field were irreversible.

Madam Minister, this makes a total of 8 studies I have sent you over the last couple of weeks all of which show harmful effects from non-thermal radiation. I urge you to send this data to an independent researcher/scientist, one not in Health Canada which has become infamous for its affiliations with the industries it monitors. Please send it to someone who has no connection to the telecommunication industry, either indirectly (using industry journals to publish "studies" to further his/her career) or directly and ask for an objective opinion. If you need references I would be happy to provide a list of names. If you want more studies, tell me how many are needed, 20? 100? 1000? I've got them.

Many people who have worked for Health Canada in various areas have described it as being corrupt, corrupt to the core (as per Shiv Chopra). It is time for this department to be cleansed for the sake of the Canadian public.

I dare Health Canada to look at its commitment to me to amend Safety Code 6 if I provided one credible and to tell me in writing that there is no credibility to any of the studies I've provided.

Failing that, I dare Health Canada to tell me there isn't enough evidence in the 8 studies I've provided so far to invoke the Precautionary Principle, the true Precautionary Principle, not the one that refers to cost implications and risk assessment. The one that says: "When an activity raises threats to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relationships are not established scientifically." If Health Canada will not follow its mandate and protect our children and families as it should, and as other countries have, then Health Canada has no reason for being. That department should be done away with. Currently Health Canada is a farce, and a dangerous one at that. It is your job, Madam Minister, to end what has been happening for far too long -- either bring in reliable, capable, independent people who answer to the Canadian public and not the corporations, or do away with this department.

Dear HESA Committee Members,

You are being deceived by Health Canada.

Safety Code 6 is purported to provide protection against both thermal and non-thermal radiation. This what Health Canada keeps saying. But these radiation exposure limits are based on ICNIRP's standards which, ICNIRP will tell you, are intended for short term thermal effects only. (www.icnirp.de/documents/emfgdl.pdf) This is the deception.

I have been told by members of Health Canada and the Royal Panel that they follow ICNIRP's selection criteria, meaning they use the same basis for selecting scientific studies and literature. Also, they use the same causation criteria, meaning they follow ICNIRP's thermal "cause of damage". In addition, Health Canada often states that they follow the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Before assuming that this should satisfy any critical review of Safety Code 6, please read the attached document entitled "Conflict of Interest & Bias in Health Advisory Committees: A case study of the WHO's Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Task Force." This document, which is being submitted with the author's permission, is the result of many years of study by Don Maisch, and forms part of his doctoral dissertation. He explains the close relationship between ICNIRP and WHO, and between WHO and the telecom industries. In contradiction of stated policies ensuring and promising independence, WHO's EMF Task Force has become driven by the very corporations which are being regulated, through allowing their participation in decision-making and through funding members of the Task Force (both directly and indirectly), most notably Michael Repacholi. These same Task Force members are also members of ICNIRP, the very body upon which Health Canada relies to confirm the adequacy of Safety Code 6.

This relationship between ICNIRP, WHO, Health Canada, and the telecommunication industry alone should cause a demand for a truly independent review of Safety Code 6, which must include evidence of biological harm at non-thermal levels.

Obviously, there is a conflict of interest which cannot be denied which has lead to the deception, of which all of us are victims. But there is more to it.

Soon Dr. Maisch will publish his entire dissertation which includes evidence that "risk assessment" and determination of peer-review criteria has been defined in such a manner as to arrive at results supporting the status quo, which allow ICNIRP, WHO and Health Canada to tell everyone "there is no evidence of harm from non-thermal radiation." It is true that they have found no evidence because, based on their selection criteria, studies showing harm from non-thermal radiation have been excluded from investigation. In pure layman's terms, if you don't look for it, you won't find it!

This document supports statements made by several experts during the Microwave Meetings, April 27-29, advising that Safety Code 6 is inadequate and does not protect the public against exposure to wireless devices such as cellphones, cell transmitters, WiFi and DECT phones. I ask that you consider this as evidence supporting our request for a new safety guideline based on independent research showing biological effects, not ICNIRP's or WHO's industry-funded recommendations.

I have attached two newest papers, showing the existence of a Window of maximum bioactivity of the GSM signals at 20-30 cm from a mob. phone or at 20-30 m from a base station antenna. The importance of this finding is that at 20-30 m from a base station antenna there are usually houses or working places and there is where this radiation becomes most bioactive(!). Another important finding is that GSM signals can induce cell death for intensities down to 10^-6 W/cm^2, with 6 min exposure for few days.

This is an excellent video on the dangers and health risks of installing Wi-Fi in schools. Kids (YES KIDS) describing many of the same symptoms I and others who are sensitive experience when exposed to Wi-Fi, cell towers, cordless phones and other sources of electromagnetic radiation.

Let's not mince words - with the unmitigated roll-out of Wi-Fi in schools this is a monumental problem and we need to act swiftly and strongly to protect our children. We don't need peer reviewed/published studies to act on this.

We cannot wait until many our children start showing symptoms. I firmly believe that we need to raise awareness on a massive scale and do whatever it takes to have Wi-Fi removed from schools. If we need to start picketing or peacefully demonstrating on a regular basis, so be it. We the people elect our governments - unfortunately it looks like "we the people" have to do their job of protecting our children.

Citizens for Safe Technology will be hosting several public meetings in Surrey and Vancouver over the coming months to discuss the dangers and risks of cell phone use by children and also Wi-Fi in schools. We will be showing a new, award winning documentary called "Full Signal".

Please distribute this message widely and help us continue raise awareness. Judging by the tone of the hearings on microwave radiation in Ottawa this past week, our government isn't doing anything to protect us and does not want to stop the gravy train of industry revenue from these technologies. Their longer they deny the problem the greater their liability grows.

I'll leave you with one more link. There you will find several short videos of retired scientist Barry Trower talking about Wi-Fi in schools. Barry worked for the British military intelligence in microwave and stealth warfare. Barry reported a week ago in a radio interview that France is spending 174 million euros pulling Wi-Fi out of all its schools. I have been in touch with Barry's assistant and she is sending me some info to confirm this.

Dear Ms. Murray,

You may remember me from a meeting we had at your office in June 2008. My friend and colleague Milt Bowling also attended that meeting.

I brought to your attention the fact that I had become ill while living just a few blocks away from your office in Kerrisdale, specifically that I had become Electrohypersensitive living in close proximity to three buildings that have cell phone transmitters on them.

 At the time I was experiencing a myriad of neurological symptoms, including disturbed sleep, constant tinnitus, headaches, warmth and tingling in my extremities, problems with memory and fatigue just to name a few. I may have even related how my family doctor told me that he had another patient who was experiencing the same symptoms when in close proximity to cell towers and other wireless technologies. I would assert that there are many more people, estimated at between 5% and 20% of the population, experiencing these symptoms. They likely have no idea what is causing their distress.

Last November (2009) after a lengthy housing search, I moved to a home on acreage in South Surrey. Having distance from cell phone transmitters, Wi-Fi and cordless phones and also taking part in a health intervention program that treats Electrohypersensitivity has had a significant positive impact on my health.

I also may have mentioned that in January 2008, I was diagnosed with what appeared to be a benign brain tumor. Thankfully, subsequent MRI's have shown no growth or change.

Fast forward to May 2010: We now find that children in schools with Wi-Fi are experiencing and self reporting symptoms of Electrohypersensitivity as witnessed in this video:

I understand that you are part of a committee taking part in hearings this past week on the effects of microwave radiation. I remember you mentioning in June 2008 that from your perspective, my reporting of this information was anecdotal and that in your words it would take large numbers of people - 40,000 - as many as those in a typical riding such as Vancouver Quadra, to have enough weight to have the government sit up and take this issue seriously.

At this point in time, I am almost two years farther along in my work and research on this issue. From my perspective, it is clear that there is no mass hysteria or collective psychosomatic phenomenon going on here - there are simply too many of us who have, independently of each other, reported the same constellation of health problems and symptoms. People are getting sick - from cell towers, cell phones, Wi-Fi, cordless phones and still we have no demonstration of action from government showing that they are truly taking this monumental problem seriously.

If government was taking this issue seriously:

- We would see independent health studies in neighborhoods such as Kerrisdale or the West End of downtown comparatively measuring the health of residents living close to towers with those not living around the technology.

- We would see independent health studies on the effects of wireless technologies on brainwaves (EEG), heart rate and other biological processes rather than technical studies that confirm what we already know - that radiation levels from cell towers and Wi-Fi don't exceed Safety Code Six guidelines.

- We would see family doctors engaging in learning how to diagnose and treat Electrohypersensitivity and speaking up about this issue rather than remaining silent.

My ability to earn a living has been severely impacted since being diagnosed as Electrohypersensitive and I am only now starting to figure out how get my income levels back up to where they were a few years ago. I work as an I.T. Support Consultant to medium and small business - not the ideal profession if you are sensitive to wireless technologies.

My ability to parent my two children (who are now 8 and 10 years old) has also been severely impacted by exposure to wireless technologies. In September 2007, at a time when I had 50% time with Zach and Nicole, I had to give up all my time with them for a six week period ? I simply could not manage the day to day stress.

 It has taken almost 2. 5 years to get back to the point where I can care for them and have close to the 50% time I had. I am truly blessed to have an empathetic co-parent (their mother). The pain my children and I experienced while we had limited time with each other was very hard on all of us. I must also mention how challenging this has been for their mother, a single parent who is also running her own business who stepped up and singlehandedly took on additional time with Zach and Nicole to allow me time to get my health in order.

I have spent tens of thousands of dollars on my health, moving, and other interventions to reduce my exposure. Like others who are Electrohypersensitive, I have had no choice but to "run for cover" to get as far as I can from the city and the dense array of microwave transmitters found there. After 18 months on an Electromagnetic Intervention Program I can now ?tolerate? time spent in the city, but often have to spend a day recovering in South Surrey after spending a day the downtown core.

Make no mistake - those of us whose health has been impacted by wireless technologies are the ?canaries in the coal mine?. There are individuals I know of across the country who simply can no longer have a career or function in society.

This knowledge and awareness has had me working tirelessly with other parents to have Wi-Fi removed from schools and I will not stop until this has been accomplished. I have serious concerns for the health of my children who are currently attending a Wi-Fi'd school in White Rock ? the stress and concern are unavoidable considering what I feel like when I am around strong Wi-Fi signals and what I know as a senior  I.T. support technician who has installed at least 100 Wi-Fi networks.

I regularly hear reports on the news of "conflicting evidence" regarding the studies around wireless technologies. When one takes a discerning look at these studies, we find that those that are truly independent and not funded by industry are 80% more likely to find a correlation between ill health and exposure (Dr. Henry Lai). The only way to truly evaluate the value and quality of a study is to take a critical look at the study design.  Looking at the quality and design of industry funded studies versus independently funded studies will confirm that the current independent science is conclusive and that this has been the case for several years.

The Bioinitiative report ( http://www.bioinitiative.org/ ), which has unfortunately been marginalized by the wireless industry, is a "review" of over 2000 peer reviewed, published scientific papers on the health effects and biological effects of microwave radiation from wireless technologies. The authors of the report reached their conclusions based on a review of all these papers. I would assert that the Bioinitiative report is one of the most important documents currently available on this crucial subject. The authors of the report who are public health doctors, Phd's and other scientists, volunteered their time and worked tirelessly in service to humanity.

We in dire need of leaders who will stand up and start taking action to protect us, which is one of the most important roles government plays. I respectfully realize how challenging this is - no one MP or MLA can do this alone. Dr. Keith Martin, MP for Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca has been representing the citizens of Collingwood BC on this issue for a few years. Perhaps his experience as a medical doctor has afforded him a ?birds eye? perspective on this huge problem.

Internationaler Appell von Würzburg

Auf Einladung der ?European Academy for Environmental Medicine EUROPAEM? trafen sich vom 23.04. ? 25.04.2010 in Würzburg namhafte nationale und internationale Wissenschaftler der Gebiete Umweltmedizin, Toxikologie, Immunologie, Neurologie und Humangenetik, praktizierende Ärzte und Zahnärzte, Angehörige anderer Heilberufe sowie Vertreter von Patienteninitiativen unter dem Motto ?Wissenschaft trifft Praxis? zu einem internationalen Ärztekongress. Dieser beschäftigte sich speziell mit dem Thema der Neuro-Endokrino-Immunologie und ihrer Bedeutung für die Umweltmedizin. Die Teilnehmer stellten mit großer Sorge die Zunahme chronischer Multisystemerkrankungen (CMI) fest, zu denen neben den Krankheitsbildern Multiple Chemikalien Sensitivität (MCS), Chronisches Erschöpfungssyndrom (CFS) und Fibromyalgiesyndrom (FMS) auch Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen, metabolisches Syndrom, neurodegenerative Krankheiten, die Gruppe der Autoimmunopathien und Krebs, zählen.

Auf dem Kongress konnte in eindrucksvoller Weise unter Beweis gestellt werden, dass diesen chronischen Krankheiten ähnliche Pathomechanismen zu Grunde liegen. Ihnen gemeinsam sind chronische Entzündungsprozesse, die von Umwelteinflüssen chemischer (Schadstoffe), biologischer (z.B. Infektionserreger) und physikalischer (z.B. elektromagnetische Felder EMF) Art ausgelöst werden. Chronische Erkrankungen bedingen Langzeitpatienten, deren medizinische Betreuung immer höhere Kosten verursacht. Dies führt häufig dazu, dass Betroffene sozial ausgegrenzt werden. Vor dem erschreckenden Hintergrund der aus allen Ländern Europas gemeldeten wachsenden finanziellen Engpässe, insbesondere im öffentlichen Gesundheitswesen, muss eine weitere Zunahme der chronischen Erkrankungen den bereits im Gang befindlichen Kollaps der nationalen Gesundheitsdienste und der Krankenversicherungen in Europa beschleunigen. Abhilfe verspricht hier nur ein Wechsel der Prioritäten von einer heute zu einseitig symptomatisch ausgerichteten Medizin hin zur kausal ausgerichteten kostensparenden Primärprävention.

Die Kongressteilnehmer richten einen dringlichen Appell an die Europäischen Umwelt- und Gesundheitsminister, an die europäische Kommission, an die Europäischen Parlamentarier, an die nationalen Regierungen sowie an die Vorstände der Sozial- und Privatversicherungen, diesen Erkenntnissen und Entwicklungen die unverzichtbare Beachtung zu schenken. Dies bedeutet mehr Gewichtung und finanzielle Investitionen in Primärprävention, Vorsorge und möglichst frühzeitige Erkennung und Diagnostik dieser chronischen, letztlich Umwelt assoziierten Krankheiten zu tätigen. Dies bedeutet generell auch auf europäischer Ebene eine uneingeschränkte Wahrnehmung der Forschungsergebnisse der praktizierenden Umweltmedizin und ihre Integration in die universitäre Forschung und Lehre. Die Europäischen Regierungen werden aufgefordert, die ratifizierten Beschlüsse der 4. Ministeriellen Konferenz der Umwelt- und Gesundheitsminister in Budapest, 2004, endlich in die Tat umzusetzen. Dieser Appell wurde einstimmig vom Plenum des Kongresses angenommen.
