Industry study shows brain tumour link to heavy mobile phone usage

VIDEO

A LONG-awaited international study of the health risks of mobile phones has linked extended mobile phone use to an increased risk of developing brain tumours.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/brain-tumour-link-to-mobiles/story-e6frg6n6-1225867464272

If it has been established that heavy use of cell phones can cause brain tumors, then the governments, industry, WHO, the psychiatry industry can no longer claim that EHS (electro magnetic sensitivity) dose not exist!! There is no doubt that one would at least suffer headaches while the tumor is developing.

Institute for Health and the Environment, University at Albany, Rensselaer, New York Ten-Year INTERPHONE Cell Phone Study Reports Increased Risk for Brain Cancer Experts call for changes in cell phone design, warnings, ban on use by children.

May 18, 2010: Today?s release of the final results of the ten-year long World Health Organization INTERPHONE Study confirms previous reports showing what many experts have warned ? that regular use of a cell phone by adults can significantly increase the risk of glioma by 40% with 1640 hours or more of use (this is about one-half hour per day over ten years). Tumors were more likely to occur on the side of the head most used for calling. David Carpenter MD MPH, BioInitiative Report co-editor and Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at University at Albany, Rensselaer, NY says that "While this study is not perfect, the risks documented in it must be taken seriously as a warning to limit cell phone use, to restrict the use of cell phones, especially by children, and to call on manufacturers for redesign of cell phones and PDAs. It should also serve as a warning to governments that the deployment of new wireless technologies may bring risks to the public that are widespread, involuntary and increase long-term health care costs."

The study appears in the International Journal of Epidemiology. Thirteen teams from countries around the world combined their results.

Michael Kundi, head of the Institute of Environmental Health, Medical University of Vienna says of the study "Authors emphasize that no increased risk was detected overall. But this is not unexpected. No exposures to carcinogens that cause solid tumors like brain cancer or lung cancers, for example from tobacco and asbestos have ever been shown to significantly increase cancer risk in people with such short duration of exposure. The latency period for brain cancer is 15-30 years."

The INTERPHONE findings lend support to previous studies from Sweden´s Orebro University Hospital, University of Utah and UC Berkeley where meta-analyses have all reported increased risk of glioma when combining results of brain tumor studies.

Lennart Hardell, Orebro University, Sweden concludes "The final INTERPHONE results support findings of several research groups, including our own, that continuing use of a mobile phone increases risk of brain cancer. We would not expect to see substantially increased brain tumor risk for most cancer-causing agents except in the longer term (10 year and longer) as is the case here in the population of regular cell phone users."

"The patients included in this study were 30-59 years old, excluding younger and older users. Use of cordless phones was neglected in the analysis. Radiofrequency radiation from some cordless phones can be as high as mobile phones in some countries, so excluding such use would underestimate the risk.?

With more than four billion cell phone users around the world, the potential for a brain cancer epidemic leads experts to call for changes in cell phone design, warnings, and a ban on use by children. Children are more at risk than adults from the effects of most toxic exposures in life, including both chemicals and radiofrequency radiation from cell phones. Experts are worried about the effects of radiofrequency radiation on the developing brain and nervous system of children.

Public health warnings were raised in the BioInitiative Report on possible risks from cell phones and other exposures to electromagnetic fields (EMF) in 2007. It advised against the continuing deployment of sources of EMF and radiofrequency radiation from wireless technologies in advance of health studies, and argued for new biologically-based public safety limits to deal with emerging risks from new technologies. Results of the INTERPHONE study provide strong confirmation of the importance of these warnings.

Casual users - no increased risk. Regular, casual, "normal" users are not at risk. Whereas normal users are not at risk, abnormal users are at risk. While in reality it's the opposite: "normal" regular users are at risk, the "abnormal" who barely talk- are the ones who are not at risk. This only illustrates how twisted the INTERPHONE is. It's upside down.

Note - The Interphone Study and the various ways that it has been reported, have muddied the waters of EMF safety once again. If anyone has doubts about the danger of cell phones, they should look at the huge number of studies which detail the health effects of microwave radiation. Those studies have been ongoing for over sixty five years and the adverse health effects are well established.

The result of the interphone study are not surprising. The metrology for the study are imprecise. Instead of looking at the cancer link, I would be looking for evidence increased neurodegenerative disease due to RF exposure.

Working form theory it would be expected that exposure to RF would exacerbate neurotoxic effects causing cell death at the point of exposure and bystander effects. For example under particular circumstances exposure to GSM modulated, 900 MHz signal is shown to act as a co-stressor for oxidative damage of neural cells resulting in neurodegenerative disease and immune system impairment.

Pressemitteilung des Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) vom 18. Mai 2010

A generation's health is being ignored

I write you today with a song in my heart. It seems Interphone is finally going public about cell phones and brain tumors (although the usual media spin on the results have already begun, down playing the brain cancer aspect). I'm sure you've heard about this by now, but more will be revealed this week.

Anyway, I wanted to give you an update on our trip to Washington, DC last week, lobbying for The Children's Wireless Protection Act, a bill calling for a brain cancer warning label (with possibly softer language at the federal level, although we may have the juice we need now to stick with the brain cancer label) on all cell phones and the packaging. The meetings went SPECTACULAR, even before this new news of Interphone.

So, we met with a total of 35 reps from Congress and the Senate, 5 of these meetings were direct, in person with the Congressman or Senator, about 7 meetings with top legal staff on committees and reps, etc., and the rest with the legislative directors...the legisaltive directors are hugely important to this process. Sometimes legislators don't even read a bill, they just depend on their legisaltive directors to tell them how to vote!!!

Of those meetings, we received 2 or 3 offers of potential authorship (a legislator must author the bill in order for it to be introduced), 20 potential commitments of co-sponsorship - 15 of which are pretty solid commitments and about 5 direct on the spot, YES, I will co-sponsor and one, "I want to author this bill immediately"!!! There is of course the possibility that we will not even need a bill, just have a hearing and the FDA is forced to slap a warning label on the cell phone, and we are pushing for this, but the general consensus was that we may have to have a bill. But that may all be different now with the release of Interphone. We will see. Also, the resounding request from most of the supporters was "Don't blow my cover until after I get re-elected in November!" They are afraid of publicly supporting this bill for fear of industry backlash, supporting their opponent and ousting them from office. So they do not want to be public on this until mid-terms, when they are re-elected. Very understandable.

State side, the bill is being brought again in Maine this year and we have a commitment from a senator in CA to bring it as well!!! CA makes up 10% of the US, so this could prove to be a game changer for the federal level if we have any trouble at all moving the bill there.

Additionally, legislators in DC have expressed interest in viewing the testimonies in Maine, so we have uploaded most of the videos from the hearings that were held in March. Here is a link where we posted them on our website for viewing...

http://www.thepeoplesinitiative.org/Solutions.html

Also, we had to form another group that is allowed to spend 100% of it's efforts on lobbying (non profits are limited in this capacity). It is called The American Association for Cell Phone Safety and comprised primarilly of cell phone radiation victims who are pissed and want to do something about this!!! Some of the members are in law suits against industry from cell phone induced brain tumors, some have been damaged by their cell phones but do not have a brain tumor, some are just plain old worried about their children.

http://www.americanassociationforcellphonesafety.org

The website is 100% new so please bare with us while our webmaster is loading it.

This website will still be doing lobbying, but we must also focus on education and outreach, as we are limited as a 501c3 in lobbying.

By the way, if anyone would like to join our new lobbying group, we need you!!!

If you live in Europe, unless you know people in Iowa or NJ, you can skip to the bottom of this email...

Okay, if you live in the US, we especially need you if...

1) You live in the state of Iowa or know people who live in the state of Iowa.

2) You live or know of people who live in the following districts of NJ...

Metuchen, Edison, New Brunswick, South Amboy, Raritan Bay, Sayerville, Highland Park, South River, Union Beach, Matawan, Strathmore, Keansburg, Atlantic Heights, Highlands, Navesink, Seabright, Mammoth Beach, Long Branch, Asbury Park, Belmar, Lake Como, Spring Lake, Neptune City, Wanamesa, Oakhurst, Port Monmouth, Key Port, Morganville, York Town, Old Bridge, South River, Plainfield, Englishtown, Red Bank, Piscataway, Aberdeen, Allenhurst, Avon By the Sea, Bradley Beach, Deal, Hazlet, Interlaken, ey Port, Lake Cmo, Loch Arbour, Manalapan, Marlboro, Middletown, Monmouth Beach, Neptune, Ocean, Redbank, West Long Branch, Franklin, Plainfield.

The reps from both these areas may play a key role in the legislation. Thus we are trying to build constiuency support. Please email us or have them email us.

Thank you so much everyone for your help! We are confident we will pass this bill very soon, both statewide and eventually federally and of course ultimately world wide, these things will soon come with a health warning. But of course none of this can be done without your help and participation. It truly does "take a village". So if you know of people in these areas or would like to get the bill going in your state or country or can help in any way, don't be shy!!! Please let us know!!!

PS: Just for some closure on Joe Morrisey, which I'm sure you've already heard by now, I have included a news link...

Father, Son Charged In Professor's Death, Joseph Morrissey's Tenants, Randy Tundidor Sr. and Jr., Both Charged In Killing
http://www.justnews.com/news/23110466/detail.html

Thank you for your continued support. I hope you enjoy the testimonies. Feel free to pass them on. The one from the CTIA, Vice President is especially charming, watching this man testify against putting a brain cancer warning label on cell phones for children. He also just so happened to have spent his career at the FCC prior to becoming VP at CTIA. What a coincidence.

Below is my response to the BC Cancer Agency's pathetic interpretation of Interphone

From: Arthur Joyce
Date: May 18, 2010 12:24:31 PM PDT (CA)
To: acolina@bcts.hnet.bc.ca
Subject: Interphone study report

Dear Ms. Colina: I write in response to the BC Cancer Agency's flawed interpretation of the recently released Interphone study results. It seems that depending on reporter or scientist bias, the results of this study are interpreted differently. As a freelance journalist who has been studying this issue for three years now, I can tell you two important facts that the report below overlooks:

1) an analysis of an earlier draft of Interphone by over 40 doctors, scientists and health professionals concluded that there were significant methodological flaws in the study, calling its validity into question; and 2) there are literally thousands of other studies, some going back to the early 1970s done by the US military (but kept secret until recently), showing serious biological harm from exposure to microwaves in the frequency spectrum typically used by cell phones.

The best meta-analysis done to date on some 2,000 studies is still the BioInitiative Report ( http://www.bioinitiative.org ), which?in contrast to the Interphone study?received no funding from the telecommunications industry. That the principle of conflict of interest has been so grossly ignored in the case of the Interphone study is shameful. Why else would it have taken so many years to release the results except that even with this poorly designed study, there were serious indications of increased risk of brain tumours from prolonged cell phone use?

The BC Cancer Agency does itself a disservice relying on Ms. McBride's strange, plainly wrong interpretation of Interphone. You are placing thousands of British Columbians at further risk by claiming there is no risk to using cell phones, especially to children who are more vulnerable. This is shameful, when there are plenty of studies to demonstrate risk. We should proceed, not on 100 percent scientific certainty as the industry would like, but on the Precautionary Principle.

Attached is the document analyzing the flaws in the Interphone study. Kindly pass it along to Dr. McBride and make it available to your clients should they require more information on this subject.

Sincerely,

Sean Arthur (Art) Joyce

International EMF Collaborative Advisory on Forthcoming Interphone Brain Tumor Study

International EMF Collaborative Advisory on Forthcoming Inter Phone Brain Tumor Study

--------

Interphone results at last!

Finally, more than 10 years after its initiation, and 5 years after the first results were initially hoped for, the INTERPHONE project is about to offer the first pooled results and analysis of the 13-country research programme. The wait has been so long, and the results anticipated so strongly, that there is likely to be a lot of publicity surrounding the results when they are officially released next Tuesday (18th May 2010). In preparation, we provide a quick insight into our coverage and views on the INTERPHONE project so far.

Robert C. Kane "Cellular Telephone Russian Roulette"

Though some of you might know it already or had it in their mail earlier from me, many might not know. I'd be lucky if those who already received the book some time ago would leave a short comment or drop me one I can publish together with the article?

We have the most important book about the hazards of mobile phones online as PDF:

Robert C. Kane ? Cellular Telephone Russian Roulette (Download)

Robert C. Kane had been working as top developer inside Motorola for decades, developing mobile phones. He died from brain cancer a few years ago, not without leaving this planet with a message, which you can find in his book.

I am sure this book could help to wake up people.

International Appeal from Würzburg

?The European Academy for Environmental Medicine (EUROPAEM) invited many renowned national and international scientists and health care professionals to a medical conference held in Wuerzburg, Germany from April 23 to April 25, 2010.

Greatly concerned, participants noted the increasing prevalence of various chronic multisystem illnesses.

At the conference it was impressively demonstrated that these chronic diseases are based on similar pathological mechanisms. Common mechanisms are chronic inflammatory processes influenced by environmental factors including chemical pollutants, biological infectious agents, and electromagnetic field (EMF) triggers.?

Cell Phone 'Honeymoon' Finally Over?

Sean Arthur Joyce

With articles on the link between cell phones and brain tumours or other cancers now appearing in major magazines such as GQ, Harpers's, Prevention and even Time magazine, it appears the long 'honeymoon' North American telecommunications corporations have enjoyed is finally over.

What I mean by that is that due to the deep level of vertical integration between media corporations who control the news we get and the Big Telecom who are now their major advertisers, until recently there has been a virtual media 'blackout' on such stories.

But as more and more independent scientific studies from around the world demonstrate grave concern with the effects of microwaves on biology, including DNA strand breaks that lead to permanent chromosomal damage, the tide of public concern has become overwhelming.

Some scientists such as Australian neurosurgeon Dr. Vini Khurana are predicting a massive wave of brain tumours between 2008-2012. The problem of course is that medical statistics are often poorly coordinated with overall data, so naysayers can easily claim there are no trend increases in tumours. Yet already it's known that brain tumours are now the leading killer of kids in the U.S. ??

A leading authority on cancer, epidemiologist Dr. Samuel Epstein, has stated that in his view both the Canadian and American Cancer Societies are compromised due to close funding ties with the pharmaceutical industry. So it is no longer enough to simply pull up their websites and rely solely on them for guidance. (See http://www.preventcancer.com )

At the international level, the EMF project at the WHO formerly headed up by Dr. Repacholi has also been criticized for setting microwave exposure standards that are considered by many scientists to be far outside the range of safety. Some have suggested that Repacholi himself is compromised by receiving funding from the telecommunications industry. (See http://www.next-up.org )

Congressional hearings in the U.S. recently heard testimony from Dr. Devra Davis, another leading scientist who has been sounding warnings on high exposure levels in North America. Not surprisingly, there have been no American studies done on the subject since the one headed up by epidemiologist Dr. George Carlo in the 1990s. This $28 million study was part of the telecommunication industry's 'deal with the devil', the FDA; a study they agreed to fund in exchange for being allowed to market cell phones WITH NO PRE-MARKET SAFETY TESTING. When Dr. Carlo delivered his final report to the telecom industry in 1999, noting some serious concerns with biological effects from cell phones, it was quickly buried.

In the final week of April we had a similar hearing in Canadian Parliament, though not quite so high profile, with the House Standing Committee on Health in Ottawa. The Parliamentary committee agreed to hear concerns about microwave exposure standards after Bloc Québécois MP Luc Malo presented a petition with 1,100 signatures asking Parliament to ?protect the public from microwaves.? The petition was an initiative of the Québec group Protect Our Children From Microwaves (SEMO in French), headed by François Therrien.

The Committee heard testimony from international experts, including Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy of the UK, Dr. Olle Johansson of Sweden, Dr. Magda Havas of Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, and of course Health Canada's mouthpiece, Dr. Daniel Krewski. The Committee also took submissions from citizens and concerned parents across the country.

Dr. Krewski, who heads up the Centre for Population Risk Assessment at the University of Ottawa, has received funding from the telecommunications industry. He is not the only one on Health Canada's panel of scientists with direct or indirect links to the industry. This is standard-issue influence peddling with government, a typical tactic of industry used since the advent of Big Tobacco.??

To its credit, the Committee has decided to allocate $12,000 to further study the matter. What that study will mean has yet to be explained. Will they finally begin to include the countless international studies showing real risks from cell phone and wireless use? Will they recommend that Health Canada revisit and update its hopelessly antiquated Safety Code 6? Or will Big Telecom trump any real change? It remains to be seen. The marriage of corporation and government has proven disastrous in every sphere of life, from communications to the environment. The current oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is just the latest proof of that. And like any bad marriage, when the honeymoon wears off, it's time to consider exit strategies. Just as the U.S. Congress is grappling with ways to impose some governance on a Wall Street run amok, we must do the same with Big Telecom.

At present, Industry Canada has de facto power over any regional district or municipal government when it comes to granting permission to erect cell phone transmitters and towers. Local democracy is trashed in favour of profit-making corporations. They cannot continue to be allowed to run roughshod over communities who are merely trying to preserve a healthy way of life for their families. "Business is business," true, but not when your product endangers my health or even my life.

Big Telecom, the honeymoon is over. Divorce papers should follow shortly.

Sunday Edition, response

On your April 25th, 2010 broadcast of the ?Sunday Edition?, the 3rd hour talk with Telecommunication Industry defender Dr. Daniel Krewski was as entertaining as an espionage movie. The soft, reassuring tones of Dr Krewski, telling us the Precautionary Principal is not valid in the modern age and repeating Industry?s verse and chorus of assurance and safety. Then there is the confidence in his weight of evidence and Safety Code 6 and all the while, behind the scenes, guess who is receiving Telecommunication Industry funding for research validating their very own Industry. And for humour, add the whole Catch-22 of the oxymoron ?Industry funded?, especially when cloaked under the empty phrase ?weight of evidence?. Guess who is funding the ?weight? in weight of evidence. And what about the evidence smothered under that weight?

Then, lurking in the background is Repacholi. Who?d have guessed the webs of intrigue?

And what is a movie without a sequel?

?When is the report (Interphone Study) going to be released?? asks Michael Enright is a slightly smiling voice. ?If you call me in a few weeks I might even have a date for you Michael? croons the layered Krewski.

Promises, promises, promises.

Frank Woodcock

Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition, warns that the American Cancer Society has close financial ties to the makers of mammography equipment. Five radiologists have served as presidents of the American Cancer Society (ACS).

In its every move, the ACS promotes the interests of the major manufacturers of mammogram machines and films, including Siemens, DuPont, General Electric, Eastman Kodak, and Piker.

This bias hypes mammography, which Dr. Epstein and Dr. Rosalie Bertell emphasize is an avoidable cause of breast cancer itself.

According to World Wire:

?Routine mammography delivers an unrecognized high dose of radiation, warn Drs. Epstein and Bertell. If a woman follows the current guidelines for premenopausal screening, over a 10 year period she would receive a total dosage of about 5 rads. This approximates the level of exposure to radiation of a Japanese woman one mile from the epicenter of atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima or Nagasaki.?
