8 to kill the bill for warning label in Maine

This email is going to be a little long. I apologize in advance. I wanted to give you an update on Maine. It's not over yet, but here is what's happened thus far...

We BLEW THEM AWAY at the hearings in testimony on the science and with Mainers speaking out. We had absolutely top drawer scientists from around the country and world. However, it all in the end boiled down to the politics as opposed to the science. What a shocker.

Here is what we were up against in Maine...The CDC director of Maine, Dr. Dora Mills, is the sister of the Senator who sits on the HHS committee (where hearings were) and who also happens to be running for governor of Maine this year. The other sibling in this family is in a top position at the federal level of the CDC, and their take on cell phones is that of the FDA and FCC...NO PROBLEM, END OF STORY.

The vote of the committee was 8 to 6. 8 to kill the bill for warning label (their words), but to have Maine post on their CDC website links to info on this subject from the federal websites on ways the public can reduce RF exposure. The 6 votes (called the minority report) was to have CDC website links for Maine on ways the public can reduce RF exposure, request for research at the federal level and a request for CTIA to voluntarily get more info out to the public on cell phones and health effects and how to reduce exposure to RF. There will be a final vote for the full legislative body next week on everything. But the legislator, Andrea Boland is quick to point out in either case, both the majority report and the minority report means Maine will be the first state in the US to vote to inform the public on how to reduce RF exposure. Sadly, there will not be a brain cancer warning label on cell phones in Maine this year. Andrea wants to come back with the bill again next year and we will of course be working with her to help in any way we can. In the meantime, we are still working with other states who have expressed interest, as well as hearings on this at the federal level. It took Henry Waxman 10 years to pass the Clean Air Act. We don't expect it to take that long with this bill, but we also are not surprised that it did not pass this first time around. Had we had a SAR bill, things might be different. SAR of course sings the song of the industry fallacy that below 1.6 w/kg is protective of human health because after all, only heat from RF is what causes damage. But we are not playing that game, as we full well know that heat is not what causes the damage of tissue from cell phones and damage occurs at thousands of levels lower than SAR "safety" limits set for cell phones. There is currently a SAR bill in CA that will be going to vote this year. This bill is not nearly as threatening to industry as a brain cancer warning label, as it sings industry's song on SAR and we expect it to pass without a problem. One good thing that happened with this bill is it will be including headsets and after much lobbying, phone calls and an actual meeting with the legislator, he has added advice in the bill that children should not use cell phones.

I have enclosed some national news coverage if you'd like to see it, although I must warn you, it is my opinion that they bow to sponsorship pressure and slant the story in favor of industry by not reporting the actual outcome of the vote to change the bill to mandate informing the public on advisories on how to reduce RF exposure.

We will have more news later on the final outcome of the vote next week.

I would like to thank all of you on this list who testified at the hearings, who donated generously to make the expert witness testimony possible at the hearings, and to everyone who wrote an email or called the legislators in Maine. Your efforts have not been for nothing. We have made a small stride here with Maine voting that the public be officially informed of how to protect themselves from RF exposure on the Maine CDC website. It seems like nothing, but it is the first action in the history of the US that any state has officially taken on this subject. We consider it a small victory, with a long ways to go on this issue. More and heavier decisions on this issue will transpire in the near future in the US and worldwide. Our only wish is that it happen now, before the body count and lawsuits of the future forces it to happen. I am confident we will prevail.

I will keep you apprised of the final outcome in Maine after the vote goes to the floor. Thank you again for your support on this. We needed it in Maine and will continue to in the future on this bill and others like it as we move towards transparency and protection of this upcoming major public health pandemic, should things just remain status quo.

If you would like to contact the producers of CBS and express your support for a warning label on cell phones, or your disappointment that they did not accurately report on what was decided in both the minority and majority report, which was to take some action, and that there was a small victory even if it was not a warning label, you can send the an email to

Betty Chin, bc2@cbsnews.com

and enter your comment at http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/feedback/fb_news_form.shtml?tag=ftr

Thank you for all that you do on this issue and others like it and thank you for caring.

Sincerely, Liz and everyone else who helped out...and there were MANY.

The effort to legislate a warning label on cell phones in Maine

Progress is being made in the effort to legislate a warning label on cell phones in the state of Maine. The letter below was sent this morning by Representative Andrea Boland (D-Sanford) to members of the Health and Human Services Committee who will take this up in vote within the coming days. It presents compromise language that has been the result of input from various parties, including the cell phone industry, intended to earn HHS Committee votes in her direction. Once passed out of committee, the measure will be put before the full legislature.

This is the furthest any legislation has gone to protect users of cell phones anywhere in the world.

Subject: Cellphone Proposal

Dear Friends on HHS:

We've listened to scientists and researchers, activists from far and near, doctors on both sides, industry, legislators and the public, and scanned manuals and the brochure presented by Dr. Dora Mills.

Now it's time to turn to what is just and helpful for Maine people. We understand that several committee members would like to do something to help mitigate the possible risk of cellphone emissions, especially to our young people, but are uncomfortable with the focus on brain cancer and the graphic of the child's brain.

Putting together all the information that has been presented, together with input from committee members and cellphone manuals, to find expressions of what all parties seem to agree, we come up with a number of points.

Here's what we have:

The safety of cellphones cannot be guaranteed;

Cellphones have not been proven safe;

There is doubt about cellphone safety;

There are substantial Independent scientific studies that link cellphone use to health risks, including brain cancer, reproductive health, and mental function;

Cellphone use may be harmful to your health;

Children and teens are most at risk; (see brochure Dr. Dora Mills provided with her testimony, "Children and young people under 16"

Manufacturers have the responsibility for assuring their products are safe (the basis for our consumer product safety laws; the reason why Toyota is under scrutiny at congressional hearings);

Other policy bodies in other countries have taken action;

The federal government has not acted to protect us;

We have the obligation, as state legislators, to look out for our people;

People are intelligent and have the right to know;

Cellphones should not be held against the head or body;

Best practice is to keep away from the head and body;

People should make informed choices.

A warning label is a customary way to inform (we even have warning labels on organic apple juice).

Given these points, a warning label might abbreviate the main ones, e.g:

Cellphones have not been proven safe;
Children and teens most vulnerable,
Keep away from head and body.

These are truthful statements that summarize the points not in conflict, so there should be no problem sharing them with our citizens. This is fair to them and allows everyone to make informed decisions about their health.

A graphic that conveys the message may be just the profile of a head with a phone, showing the radiation field. Committee members may have other graphics in mind to alert non-readers and children in an eye-catching way.

I look forward to working with you on Tuesday.

Andrea

Tracy-Lee Dorny built high walls to keep her family safe in a city full of threats. She now claims that state of the art security measures can't protect her from the uninvited hazard that landed on her doorstep. An iBurst cell mast was installed in August last year.

Tracy-Lee: 'To watch this big piece of tower go up 30 metres from your bedroom window and know that that is going to be radiating through your home 24/7...'

Governments buck up $5.7M for Grande Prairie Wi-Fi initiative

DARRELL WINWOOD
Herald-Tribune staff
Grande Prairie
Alberta

Hi Darrell

I have just read your article http://dailyheraldtribune.com/PrintArticle.aspx?e=2473290 about City Hall's $5.7 million wireless master plan that will bring Wi-Fi to city facilities, eventually creating a wireless network across Grande Prairie.

I find it hard to believe that elected Grande Prairie officials could act so recklessly and not consider the adverse health effects that this decision may cause. If this plan is implemented it could cause very serious harm to the health of citizens of Grand Prairie. Wi Fi works by transmitting and receiving strong signals of microwave radiation. The serious adverse health effects of microwave radiation have been known for over sixty years. This form of electrical pollution should not be allowed, to put your entire community at such risk.

I have attached sixteen documents, which will help to show you the danger of Wi Fi, among those documents are many references to scientific studies. I trust that you will notify the public of these dangers as soon as possible.

Cancer expert tells how treatment can be problem

This cancer expert is failing to consider the most important thing about cancer treatment - do not send the patient back to the conditions that caused the cancer. There is no mention about the possible triggers of the cancer in the home, the environment or the workplace. As long as cancer experts fail to monitor the cause of cancer, whether it be chemical, electro magnetic radiation or other causes, their patients will continue to re-develop the illness.
