India spells out the truth on mobile phone radiation levels

By Geoffrey Lean

An official inquiry 12 years ago recommended that the widely varying levels of radiation given off by mobile phones should be displayed when they were sold. Successive governments have failed to implement this recommendation. But now India may be beating us to it.

New guidelines laid down by the countrys? official Telecom Engineering Centre suggest that the levels should be shown on each handset. And this week, the Delhi government moved to ensure that they are prominently displayed.

Its? scarcely a radical suggestion. The British committee was chaired by Sir William Stewart, a former government chief scientist, and contained several of the experts who have been most sceptical about radiation dangers from handsets. Since its report, the evidence that mobile phones can cause cancer after long-term use has strengthened. Last summer the World Health Organisation classified them as a ''possible carcinogen''.

The mobile-phone industry has long vigorously fought such an apparently reasonable step, which may be one reason why our pliant governments have neglected to take it, and has already declared its opposition to the Indian plans. When San Francisco proposed a similar measure some years ago, the industry both called in the lawyers and announced that it would stop holding its lucrative annual exhibition, bringing some 68,000 people to the city. What, one wonders, does it have to hide?

No Wi-fi for the French National Library

Subject: No Wi-fi for the French National Library

Paris, 26 September 2011

WIFI and the French National Library, all unions on the same wavelength

Today, on Friday 23 September 2011, at the time of the Hygiene and Safety Committee of the François Mitterrand BnF (National Library), a vote took place on the project to rollout Wi-Fi in the Oval Room of the Richelieu site (in the 2nd district of Paris), at the Tolbiac site (in the 13th), as well as in the LABO of new technologies, where the only offerings in terms of documents will be those of the Orange operator 'kiosque'.

On the rest of the unions, three experts were appointed: Professor Belpomme from the University of Paris 5 (Descartes), Etienne Cendrier from the French national Robin des Toits Association and Agnès Dutrevis, Officer of the Administrative Library of the City of Paris and member of the Hygiene and Safety Committee for the City.

An exchange of information and clear presentations on the topic showed evidence that such a system would not only be dangerous to the health of the staff in the long term (the WHO having classified electromagnetic waves and possibly carcinogenic, Group 2B) and would close the doors of people who are hypersensitive to electromagnetic waves, the number of which is unfortunately increasing.

In addition, this technology is no longer the most reliable, nor the best suited for the quick transmission of data, contrary to optical fibre, an alternative solution backed by the unions and their experts.

The French Unions (CFDT, CGT and FSU) voted unanimously against this project, thus in compliance with the Precautionary Principle and in favour of equality for everyone with regard to access to Library services.

TUC advice on a class 2B carcinogen

On 31st May 2011, the WHO classified RF radiation emitted from wireless devices as a class 2B carcinogen.

The Trades Union Congress in the UK has a document about carcinogens in the workplace ( http://www.tuc.org.uk/extras/occupationalcancer.pdf ).

This offers guidance for all Trade Unions in the UK. In it they say 'trade unions believe the aim should be to remove all exposure to any known or suspected carcinogen in the workplace.'

'Caution should be used to prevent exposure to substances in Group 2B.'

'The regulations are clear: that the first aim should always be to remove the hazard.'

Management Regulations and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) lay down clear principles for prevention that must be followed when deciding what to do about a potential hazard. This means the first step must always be, where possible, to remove the hazard altogether removing any cancer-causing hazards from the workplace.'

'There is a legal requirement on employers to only use a carcinogen if there is no reasonable alternative.'

Health Impacts Of Low Energy Lighting

Please ask your MP to sign this. Thanks

Early day motion 1878

HEALTH IMPACTS OF LOW ENERGY LIGHTING

* Session: 2010-11
* Date tabled: 07.06.2011
* Primary sponsor: Gilmore, Sheila

That this House welcomes the positive contribution that low energy lighting bulbs such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are making to reduce energy consumption; acknowledges that ultra-violet radiation, electric fields and peaks in light wavelength from CFLs can aggravate conditions including lupus, migraines, autistic conditions, ME and xeroderma pigmenosum; notes the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health s statement that between 30,000 and 40,000 people in the UK might be at risk of harm in this respect; also notes that the campaign group the Spectrum Alliance estimate this figure to be in excess of 250,000; acknowledges that this restricts both the range of work and day-to-day activities these people can undertake; is aware that incandescent light bulbs are the only light source not to have such effects; acknowledges that Commission Regulation (EC) No 244/2009 prohibits the sale of incandescent light bulbs; supports the Spectrum Alliance s campaign to have incandescent light bulbs made available to those affected; and urges the Department of Health to seek an exemption from the Commission Regulation in this respect.

It is wonderful that kids are looking at the issues related to microwave radiation in their environment.

Attached is a very interesting report from Indian professor calculating the massive waste in environmental resources of these wireless devices. Two billion litres of diesel for cell towers alone every year. Imagine if we add to this the cordless phones, wifi, wii, PS3, cell phones, smart meters that do the same thing - take electricity and pulse it into the environment at the microwave frequencies?????
