PGE&E Smart Meter Plan Turns Wireless Off

PG&E in California has offered up a plan to the utility commission to address so called smart meter health concerns that simply shuts the radio function off.

http://www.earthtechling.com/2011/03/pge-smart-meter-plan-turns-wireless-off/

Letter to the NY Times

To the Editor,

Re: 'PG&E Offers Critics Option To Turn Off Smart Meters.' This option will not work. I know this to be true.

In June, 2009, although I had no idea that a 'smart' meter emitted radiation, I began feeling ill. After many months and much discomfort, I began researching my symptoms. I learned that the 'smart' meter on my home might be making me sick.

On March 4, 2010, at my insistence and with a doctors note, Con Edison replaced that 'smart' meter with another 'smart' meter, which they said had no antenna for remote reading. This, they told me was the kind used in New York City because in cities the meters are so close to each other that they would malfunction and read each other, if they had the antenna for remote reading.

For the next week I became so sick I thought I was going to die, especially scary were the heart palpitations, ear buzzing and nightmares.

On March 12, 2010, finally, Con Edison removed the second 'smart' meter and replaced it with an analog meter. Within hours the worst of the symptoms began to subside. No more nightmares at all and I have not had one since.

My terrible ear buzzing began to subside and the heart palpitations completely stopped, while I was at home.

Now, along with many others across the U.S., who have been injured by the radiation from 'smart' meters, I suffer from radio wave sickness. I am fine as long as I am not exposed to radio wave radiation from all wireless equipment and some electric appliances. I had none of this before being injured by the radiation from both 'smart' meters.

The proposal from PG&E will not work. 'Smart' meters are a dangerous mistake. They emit radio frequency radiation throughout homes and neighborhoods, even if they do not have remote antennas.

Thank You.

Michele Hertz

BC Hydros wireless 'Smart Meters'

Please take the time to learn more about BC Hydros wireless 'Smart Meters' coming to all our homes this summer. Now is the time to voice your concerns as it will affect us all.

http://www.bcndp.ca/newsroom/new-democrats-challenge-premier-designate-protect-bc-hydro-customers

http://smartmetersafety.com/

A growing number of British Columbians are very concerned over the uninvited roll out of BC Hydro?s wireless ?Smart? Meters to begin this summer for many different reasons and are increasingly frustrated with the lack of information provided by BC Hydro officials with no clear answers for the public and no resolutions offered to the many legitimate concerns voiced. It would seem reasonable as a Crown Corporation that BC Hydro officials would first address key questions that include details on energy conservation, cost increases, privacy protection, fire safety concerns, and very importantly, accommodation of electromagnetic sensitive persons and the potential long term health impacts before ever installing a single meter.

With the expenditure of nearly a billion of tax payer?s dollars, one would expect a comprehensive and independent analysis of energy and cost savings to determine the benefit of using smart meters, especially given that many unhappy consumers elsewhere sharply challenge any advantage to these new meters, stating their monthly rates have doubled, even tripled.

Some people are even reporting serious health symptoms such as headaches, heart palpitations, dizziness, nausea, tinnitus, and sleep disruptions once the new meters were installed. Some reports have even linked home fires in the USA with Smart Meters with ongoing investigation still underway.

Security also remains a top concern with confidential information from wireless transmissions remaining vulnerable to hackers as evidenced by the 179,000 illegally accessed accounts at Toronto Hydro that allowing personal information and data on usage habits to be stolen.

With the exemption of Smart Meters from all public oversight and with apparent conflict of interest in the awarding of contracts for Smart Meters, many feel there has been a sided stepping of the democratic process and blatant obstruction of truth adding only further to the air of non transparency that shrouds our dysfunctional parliament today. Many also feel their rights have been violated with forced compliance mandated to all British Columbians with no opting out of smart meters.

We witnessed on Wednesday night at the Pacific Coast Hotel many Victorians outraged over being told wireless smart meters will be going on their homes even though they are sensitive to electromagnetic radiation and will be negatively impacted by the radio frequency signals emitted by the wireless meters. Officials at BC Hydro could not say if there will be a `wired`option for meters. The Canadian Human Rights Commission recognizes this environmental sensitivity and states that all reasonable measures should be taken to accommodate those affected by using hard wiring and fiber optic cable wherever possible.

Around the globe many are trying to raise awareness to the growing scientific evidence that proves long term exposure to even low levels of radio frequency, microwave radiation from such things as cell towers, cell phones, DECT phones, Wi-Fi/Wi-Max, and now Smart Meters, is harmful to health. Newer digital technology emits pulsed and modulated signals that are more disruptive to living biology and needs to be seen as a harmful environmental pollutant as researchers have been verifying through decades of research, however, largely concealed to the public and ignored by politicians worried about keeping their jobs.

Plans to install smart meters should be stopped immediately considering the obvious dissent taking place in many states in the USA over these same wireless smart meters. It is very disconcerting that some states have banned Smart Meters including 32 counties in California, with Marin County criminalizing any further installation! However, the current government and BC Hydro officials do not want to slow down to examine the conflicts taking place elsewhere first to gain a more comprehensive picture of the problems before going ahead. Is BC Hydro really looking out for our best interest and making the right choice for the public, deciding on the most ?green? initiative for the buck that supports sustainable energy and that does not threaten human health or the living environment? Many would say NO!!

If the over flowing public meeting held the other night was any indication of the larger scale of British Columbians and how they feel about Smart Meters, there is a hurricane of trouble trouble coming that surely indicates we need to go back to the table on this one. People are fired up and deeply unsatisfied with BC Hydro?s plan, how it was implemented, and the lack of information available to the public.

Let?s do our best to keep raising awareness and hopefully put a stop to the insanity of wireless `Smart Meters` that does us and our environment more harm than good. We can do better this and our future generations deserve nothing less.

The meters aren?t smart

Re: Get smart about smart meters

http://www.therecord.com/opinion/letters/article/500364--the-meters-aren-t-smart

This editorial fails to mention the impact on seniors who live at home. We have had a senior living in our home for over 10 years who has problematic breathing issues. We have to keep heating this house during the cold days and in the summer we need to run the air conditioning and furnace filtration system so she can at least breathe comfortably. I suspect that being in a high allergy area we are not the only ones.

Where is the justice of charging more for electricity during prime times so our people with disabilities can live and breathe comfortably? No thought for the poor or seniors has gone into the process of installing these cash-cow smart meters. I suggest Energy Minister Brad Duguid and the Liberals have their heads buried in the sand. The poor get poorer as the rich dream how to rob them.

Smart Metergate

Walter Patrick McGinnis

10,03,2011

With political shenanigans and backroom intrigue that rival the Watergate scandal the BC Liberal government is embarking on a program to replace all the hydro meters in our province with the so called 'Smart' meters. This could not only hurt our pocket books it may also harm our health.

Resembling the precision of a military coup, the nameless and faceless operatives within the wireless industry, with their collaborators in government bureaucracies, and the ruling Liberal Party, have prepared and are now implementing their plan to blanket our province with yet another layer of radio frequency radiation, (rfr). So called Smart meters are being installed all around the world with much protest from consumers, but you will hear little of that from the corporate media outlets like Postmedia, the owners of most of Canada?s daily papers. Ominously our own CBC seems to be in on the scam.

The BC Government is collaborating with Accenture, the business arm of BC Hydro in making another decision that could lead to ruin for our Crown Corporation. Accenture has made a series of decisions regarding the run of river projects, the Site C dam and the so called smart meters that favor corporate profits and penalizes British Columbians.

The BC Utilities Commission must hold formal public hearings to examine how Accenture has driven BC Hydro into the ground financially and has embarked on a new hydro meter program that may have devastating health consequences for our province.

Since the master minds of the Enron scam, Author Andersen and Associates, pulled out with hundreds of millions of dollars, changed their name to Accenture and then took over BC Hydro operations, our public utility has gone from a profitable crown corporation to near bankruptcy. .. They are now the cancer inside BC Hydro. If they follow the Enron model, their mandate is to kill BC Hydro and sell parts of the carcass off to their friends.

In BC our hydro meters are going to be replaced with new high tech meters that are going to be able to monitor your electricity consumption by the second continuously, twenty four hours a day, and seven days a week. These meters have surveillance capabilities that the companies are not required to report on and threaten our privacy and security as laid out in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Smart meters emit dangerous levels of radio frequency radiation (rfr), and on top of that it appears they will not save a penny in the consumption of electricity.

Many scientific studies have shown a link between exposure to rfr and a host of ailments including serious diseases like heart arrhythmia and tachycardia and various forms of cancer. Smart Meters expose the public to rfr at harmful levels according to Dr. Magda Havas an environmental toxicologist from Trent University in Ontario.

We are going to lay down 1 billion dollars to pay independent contractors, some with close connections to the BC Liberals, to have these meters installed. Check out http://thetyee.ca/Opinion/2011/03/07/SmartMeterProfits/

Accenture (is a global management, technology services, and outsourcing company. It is registered in Hamilton, Bermuda. It is said to be the largest Consulting Firm in the world. With more than 178,000 people in 49 countries, the company generated net revenues of US$19.70 billion for the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, 2007. Accenture's clients include 91 of the Fortune Global 100 and more than two-thirds of the Fortune Global 500.

The lucrative Run of River hydro electric projects have contracts that guarantee that BC Hydro will pay major corporations like General Electric for their generated electricity at 6 times the rate that Hydro can sell it. This will bankrupt BC Hydro. These ecologically disastrous projects are financially devastating for BC Hydro and ultimately British Columbians.

It should be no surprise that this campaign to install these rfr emitting smart meters has started while the legislature is in disarray and both the ruling party and the official opposition are in a dramatic transition with new leaders. The interim leader of the New Democratic Party is now asking the new leader of the liberal party and new premier to shelve the Smart meter program pending a full governmental review. John Horrigan the NDP energy critic is busy running for the leadership of his party and the Liberal Minister of Energy, Steve Thompson is no where to be found.

Our governments have set up many impediments to full public involvement in the decision making process and thus there is little chance in stopping these meters from being installed. The Gordon Campbell Liberals passed a law that excluded Smart meters from the jurisdiction of the BC Utilities Commission with little fuss.

The federal government gets hundreds of millions of dollars per year in licensing fees. Through Industry Canada?s regulations the halting of any installation of wireless transmitters on the basis of health concerns is prohibited. Industry Canada is riddled with corporate insiders. Health Canada collaborates with the Telecommunications Industry by not recognizing any research that shows adverse health effects as a result of so called non thermal level of exposures such as emitted from a wireless meter.

The corporate media which is directly owned in many cases by the telecom industry (Postmedia the largest media conglomerate in Canada has close ties with the telecom industry) sensors public criticism and concerns about health as a result of exposure to rfr, concerns about the privacy and security of their homes, and concerns about the costs of their electricity are denied a voice.

At a 1 billion dollar price tag for BC this will means we will have to save about 100 million kilowatt hours of electricity in less consumption before the citizens will see some financial benefit. How long will it take for us to save this much electrical energy? Especially when no one can find any where in the world that these meters have been installed that energy consumption has actually been reduced.
