Letter to Candidates

It s a good idea to bring up Smart meters as an Ontario election issue. So far, I have sent versions of the following email to the NDP and Green Party - my local candidates and the party leaders:

Dear Candidate

As an opponent of Smart meters, I am wondering where you stand on having an opt-out program for the meters.

'Smart? meter radiation is a Class 2B carcinogen according to the World Health Organization. UC Nuclear experts say the meters emit at least 100 times more than cell phones. Having one on your house is like living within 500 feet of a major cell tower, according to Sage Associates.Thousands report adverse health effects, yet they are mandatory in Ontario.

I got very sick after moving to our new home. My bedroom was too close to the meter. These meters are marketed to be safe; I did not know I was 'too close' as there was no warning.

Smart meters have caused fires, been shown to overcharge customers, and violate our privacy. People all over the world are protesting. Last week, governments in Hawaii and Maryland rejected the meters. People in British Columbia are organizing to block their installations.

The Ontario Conservatives have promised, 'We will give people a choice to turn their smart meters off.' Please don t make me vote Conservative for the first time.

I look forward to hearing from you about this important issue.

Orchitt sought treatment at the Brain Injury Association of Alaska. His care provider there issued an opinion stating that he was suffering from a cognitive disorder due to his RF radiation exposure. She provided him with ongoing rehabilitation therapy to address his continuing complaints of mental slowing and mood changes. She also referred him to Dr. Daniel Amen, psychiatrist, who performed a SPECT scan with measures blood flow in the brain to identify functional changes. Dr. Amen concluded that Orchitt had some decreased brain activity as well as depression, and given the history, attributed these neurological impairments to Orchitt s RF radiation exposure.

Yesterday we remembered the terrible terrorist attacks that killed thousands of innocent people on Sept 11, 2001. It was easy to recognise the horror of the situation, explosions, fire, bodies and wreckage all shown live and repeated on television many times in the ten years since.

A disaster with much worse consequences may now be taking place but in slow motion. Exposure to microwave radiation is likely to harm very many more people than 911, but it will not be nearly as visible, newsworthy and shocking. Cancer, various illnesses, shortened lives and slow painful deaths are likely to be the consequences of using wireless convenience devices such as cell phones, cordless telephones and Wi Fi.

Who are the terrorists that are allowing this to happen? Why are Governments not taking this known threat seriously and protecting the public?

On 31st May 2011, the WHO classified RF radiation emitted from wireless devices as a class 2B carcinogen.

The Trades Union Congress in the UK has a document about carcinogens in the workplace ( http://www.tuc.org.uk/extras/occupationalcancer.pdf ).

This offers guidance for all Trade Unions in the UK. In it they say 'trade unions believe the aim should be to remove all exposure to any known or suspected carcinogen in the workplace.'

'Caution should be used to prevent exposure to substances in Group 2B.'

'The regulations are clear: that the first aim should always be to remove the hazard.'

Management Regulations and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) lay down clear principles for prevention that must be followed when deciding what to do about a potential hazard. This means the first step must always be, where possible, to remove the hazard altogether ­ removing any cancer-causing hazards from the workplace.'

'There is a legal requirement on employers to only use a carcinogen if there is no reasonable alternative.'
