Paris metro workers sue over electromagnetic emissions
Thursday 9 February 2012 | 09:09 CET | News
Paris metro transport workers' representatives have expressed concern over staff s exposure to electromagnetic emissions and surprise over management s refusal to pay for an expert study. Le Monde reports that the matter was referred to the Paris superior court, which must assess whether the request of RATP and the occupational health committee was founded. Antennas are multiplying throughout the metro system s hallways and driver cabins. Some networks allow personnal to communicate with the central computer, to locate trains, to control speeds and send maintenance data. Others enable travellers to use their mobiles on the go. More equipment is due to be installed with RATP s rollout of underground 3G. RATP management cited in-house studies that found that emissions have always been under the mandated level of 41 V/m for 2G. The committee wants the tests to be undertaken by CQFD, a group formed by consumer group Robin des Toits, which seeks to lower emissions nationally. The committee argues that management s refusal to allow tests reflect its desire to control the information given to staff and to metro users.
