Dean Baker, Truthout: 'At this point, Republican politicians are beginning to sound almost like wind-up toys when they complain about job-killing taxes and regulations that keep businesses from hiring. The media should at least do the Republicans and the public the courtesy of attempting to discern if these complaints make any sense. (McClatchy gets high marks for this effort.) If the charges are true, then there are logical implications that can be explored. The media should be taking the time to see whether the evidence is consistent with Republican claims. 'Im Jahr 2010 wurden 828.300 Sanktionen gegenüber erwerbsfähigen Hartz-IV-Berechtigten ausgesprochen, im Jahresdurchschnitt waren 136.000 Menschen von mindestens einer Sanktion betroffen. Die Bundesgeschäftsführerin der LINKEN, Caren Lay, begrüßt die Überlegungen in der Union zur Abschaffung der Schuldenbremse und bekräftigt die Kritik ihrer Partei an diesem Instrument, das sie als 'Wachstumsbremse' bezeichnet. Caren Lay erklärt:

Es ist gut, dass nun auch die Einsicht im Unionslager reift. Die Schuldenbremse ist eine Wachstumsbremse. Die öffentlichen Haushalte werden abgewürgt. Das schadet den Bürgerinnen und Bürgern und der Wirtschaft. Das Festhalten an der Schuldenbremse in der Finanzkrise ist das Symbol für ausbleibende Lernfähigkeit. Die wichtigste Lehre aus den Wirtschaftskrisen der Vergangenheit ist, dass man der Krise nicht hinterher sparen kann. Die Schuldenbremse bewirkt in der gegenwärtigen Situation wäre, dass die Kosten der Finanzkrise durch Sozialabbau finanziert werden. Der Staat kommt in eine Kürzungsspirale, die die Krise verschärft. Die Schuldenbremse muss auf den Prüfstand. Wir wollen, dass sie abgeschafft wird.

NATO s war in Libya, which began with high-minded declarations about 'protecting civilians,' now appears likely to end with a bloodbath that will claim the lives of many civilians, albeit pro-Gaddafi civilians, not the earlier threatened anti-Gaddafi civilians. Ali Tarhouni, a senior official of the NATO-backed Libyan rebels, summed up this Orwellian reality with a phrase reminiscent of the famous Vietnam War quote that 'we had to destroy the village in order to save it.' Tarhouni was quoted by the Associated Press as saying 'Sometimes to avoid bloodshed you must shed blood - and the faster we do this the less blood will be shed'...
