What Now For Lebanon?

By Franklin Lamb

The White House has informed Congressional Committee Chairpersons and American allies that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) will indict Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Wali al Faqih (jurisconsult or Supreme Religious Leader) for issuing the order to assassinate Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

The Massacre at Qana

Our moral culpability for Qana

Israel admits: There were no rocket launches from Qana on the day of the strike

It now appears that the military had no information on rockets launched from the site of the building, or the presence of Hezbollah men at the time.

Qana bombs an Israeli 'war crime'

A human rights group says the Israeli air strike on Qana that killed 54 civilians is a "war crime". It said the failure to distinguish between civilians and combatants could be judged as a war crime, and called for an UN probe into the conflict.

Amnesty: 48 Hours Not Enough As War Crimes Continue

"It is utterly shameful that governments who have influence over Israel and Hizbollah and who could help end this crisis, continue to prioritize political and military interests over innocent lives of civilians."

Qana Massacre...

The UN is beyond useless. They’ve gone from a union of nations working for the good of the world (if they ever were even that), to a bunch of gravediggers. They’re only good for digging mangled bodies out of the ruins of buildings and helping to identify and put them into mass graves.

Israel and "moral equivalence"

AntiWar.Com

The Qana massacre was the occasion for a full-court propaganda campaign by Israel's amen corner, and one has to say they rose to the occasion like real pros. First, of course, they expressed remorse -- then, naturally enough, they blamed it all on ... Hezbollah. How so? Well, you see, the Israelis bombed a building filled with children and old people because rockets fired at Israel 'originated immediately next to it.' Yet the Red Cross denied there were any Hezbollah in Qana. The Israelis keep up a constant refrain claiming Lebanon uses its own civilian population as 'human shields,' but the reality is quite different: Lebanese civilians flee when Hezbollah fires a fusillade, because they know the Israelis will soon be bombing the place to perdition...

Bomb them to gain their support?

Cato Institute
by Ted Galen Carpenter

An Israeli air strike killed almost 60 civilians in the Lebanese village of Qana on Sunday. Israeli leaders stress that their primary objective is to degrade Hezbollah's ability to launch rocket attacks against northern Israel, but they also mention another motive: forcing the Lebanese people to understand that supporting Hezbollah will bring them nothing but grief. With that realization, so the reasoning goes, most Lebanese will turn against the terrorist organization. Logic suggests that the more likely reaction will be greater Lebanese hatred of Israel and, hence, more support for Hezbollah. It is bizarre to assume that displacing a population and destroying a country's infrastructure will somehow lead the people being targeted to turn against the adversaries of the attacking power rather than the attacking power itself. Nevertheless, American hawks are urging the Bush administration to emulate Israel's dubious strategy and launch air strikes against Iran ...

The massacre at Qana

Common Dreams
by Kathy Kelly

08/19/06

Looking at the burnt and blackened hillsides throughout southern Lebanon, you can only imagine the cedar trees that only one month ago made these hills as green as the hills in Israel. ... Qana. Who will listen to bereaved mothers entreating the heavens for an end to the hellish, fiery explosions that slaughter their children. The facts tell of a massacre, the astonishing technological capacity to identify and then to exclude the children from life itself. A banner hangs in Qana, addressed to Condoleeza Rice. 'Rice, they will not see 'our new Middle East'...
