A police state is more commonly described as a totalitarian government that exerts extreme social, political, and economic control. It maintains this control by a pervasive surveillance of its own citizenry, by draconian law enforcement, and by granting or withholding 'privileges such the ability to travel. Typically, there is a special police force, such as a Stasi, that operates with no transparency and few restraints. Unlike traditional policemen, who respond to crime, the purpose of such state police is to monitor and control society. Let me restate my opening question: does America now embody this common description of a police state? Clearly it does.

Atomausstieg als Geschäftsmodell für die Atomkonzerne

Anlässlich der aktuellen Greenpeace-Studie zu den Konsequenzen der Ereignisse in Fukushima und den Ausstiegsplänen der Regierung aus der Atomenergie, erklärt die Vorsitzende der Partei DIE LINKE, Gesine Lötzsch:

Die Studie belegt, Deutschland ist ebenso wenig wie Japan auf einen Super-Gau vorbereitet. Die Bundesregierung gibt vor, so schnell als möglich aus der Atomenergie aussteigen zu wollen. Doch die vielen Hintertüren, die sie für die Atomkonzerne offen hält, weisen darauf hin, dass ein schneller Atomausstieg gar nicht gewollt ist. Der Verzicht auf dieBrennelementesteuer ist zudem ein Beleg dafür, dass die Energiewende ausschließlich von den Bürgerinnen und Bürger gezahlt werden soll. Die Atomkonzerne werden sich den Ausstieg von der Bundesregierung vergolden lassen. DIE LINKE hat eine Exit-Strategie mit Anti-Atom-Verbänden und Initiativen entwickelt. Der Atomausstieg ist danach bis 2014 machbar. Es wird länger dauern, wenn die Stromkonzerne weiter mit all ihrer Wirtschaftsmacht gegen die Energiewende vorgehen können. Deshalb muss die Macht des Stromkartells gebrochen werden.
