Why the Rich Love High Unemployment

Mark Provost, Truthout: 'Christina Romer, former member of President Obama s Council of Economic Advisors, accuses the administration of 'shamefully ignoring' the unemployed. Paul Krugman echoes her concerns, observing that Washington has lost interest in 'the forgotten millions.' America's unemployed have been ignored and forgotten, but they are far from superfluous. Over the last two years, out-of-work Americans have played a critical role in helping the richest one percent recover trillions in financial wealth.'

Ten Reasons Protecting Unions Is a Life-and-Death Issue

Eric Mann, Truthout: 'In Wisconsin, tens of thousands of public-sector workers were going to work every day, helping the people in the DMV, hospitals, health care centers, public transportation: teachers, fire fighters, clerical workers, among others. Then, on February 11, 2011, Republican Gov. Scott Walker introduced a bill, with a Republican majority in the legislature, which would virtually eliminate public-sector unions as we know them. The bill opposed collective bargaining rights, required annual votes to ask workers if they wanted the unions to represent them and prevented unions from collecting dues automatically out of workers' paychecks. The anti-union movement is spreading to Ohio and many other states, and we have to develop a plan to beat back the pro-corporate, anti-union forces.'

Kinderarmut in Deutschland: Die Ware Zahlen

Americas moral decline

The American Conservative The American Conservative
by Jack Hunter

05/23/11

American moral decline has been discussed for as long as there has been an America. Conservatives have long noted how certain cultural shifts throughout our nation s history have redefined social norms, transforming or even damaging traditional American values. They are often right, as concepts like the sanctity of life, the institution of marriage and the importance of faith have all been under assault for decades. But have we been too narrow in defining our traditional values? What, exactly, are American values? How are they unique to this country?

The Nuclear Disaster That Could Destroy Japan

Hirose Takashi, The Asia-Pacific Journal: 'The nuclear power plants in Japan are aging rapidly; like cyborgs, they are barely kept in operation by a continuous replacement of parts. And now that Japan has entered a period of earthquake activity and a major accident could happen at any time, the people live in constant state of anxiety. Seismologists and geologists agree that, after some fifty years of seismic inactivity, with the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake (Southern Hyogo Prefecture Earthquake), the country has entered a period of seismic activity.'

Are oil futures markets being manipulated?

Cato Institute Cato Institute
by Jerry Taylor and Peter Van Doren

05/18/11

If large changes in futures prices arise from a large collective imbalance of participant beliefs, what is the origin of the imbalance in beliefs? There are two possibilities. In the first, the participants determine their beliefs independently and seek to act on them independently. The result sometimes just happens to be a collective imbalance necessitating a price change to equate the number of longs and shorts. In the second, participants collude to create the imbalance...

US Senate votes to extend Police State Enabling Act

Los Angeles Times

05/23/11

The Senate voted overwhelmingly Monday to extend expiring provisions of the Patriot Act for four years despite objections of a coalition of conservatives and liberals. Because of the Obama administration s strong support for the anti-terrorism [sic] law, a bipartisan majority in both the House and Senate is expected to finish the legislation this week, keeping the provisions in force. They are scheduled to expire Friday...

Courts overturn the 4th Amendment

Strike the Root
by Michael Kleen

05/23/10

If there was any lingering doubt as to whether federal or state governments would act against constitutional or common law when it served their interests, that ambiguity has been dispelled. Just days apart, two Supreme Court decisions, one state and one federal, directly attacked the individual right against unreasonable searches and seizures as spelled out by the 4th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution...
