The conservative movement is an elaborate moneymaking venture

Salon
by Alex Pareene

06/16/11

The conservative movement is primarily a means by which the wealth of rabid right-wingers is redistributed to celebrities. Sometimes the money comes from billionaires, who know exactly what they are buying when they fund advocacy groups and think tanks, but the whole scheme is basically powered by regular right-wing folks who are kept riled up and angry enough to keep sending checks to frauds and buying books full of alarming lies...

We have always been at war with Yemen

Independent Institute
by Anthony Gregory

As Congress and the American people are finally waking up to Mr. Nobel Peace Prize s illegal presidential war in Libya, a nation that never posed a threat to the United States - and as the Bush-Obama wars in Afghanistan and Iraq continue to fatigue the nation and, in many cases, bore a complacent media - we find ourselves witnessing yet another war that seems to have just crept up out of the blue...

Imperial inanity

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

06/16/11

The New York Times yesterday carried an interesting article about U.S. military attacks in Yemen, one of five countries (that we know of) in which the U.S. Empire is killing people. The article indicated that the CIA is building a secret base outside of Yemen in order to carry out attacks inside the country in the future. Why is the base being built outside Yemen and why is its location secret?

From Muslims to Medicare, GOP selling fear again

Our Future Blog
by Richard (RJ) Eskow

06/15/11

Monday s Republican presidential debate was the opening salvo in a tawdry little war on truth that s likely to last until next November. The party s official haters, Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain, targeted a helpless religious minority. And Mitt Romney, who was praised for being 'the adult in the room' because he wouldn t join in, spent his time using fear tactics to mislead the audience about Medicare. But he won t get much criticism for that. On a stage that s enshrouded in moral blindness, the one-eyed man is presidential...

The 22 children of Guantanamo

Campaign For Liberty
by Andy Worthington

06/15/11

In May 2008, in a submission to the 48th Session of the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child, the Pentagon claimed that it had only held eight juveniles - those under the age of 18 when their alleged crimes took place - during the life of the Guantanamo Bay prison. This, however, was a lie, as its own documents providing the names and dates of birth of prisoners, released in May 2006, showed that the true total was much higher...

Seven Ways Scott Walker and the GOP Are Still Trying to Screw Wisconsin s Poor, Working Class, and Just About Everybody Else

Meredith Clark, AlterNet: 'Wisconsin governor Scott Walker has taken a machete to the state s budget and has clearly relished every swipe he is taken to social programs and civil rights. The spirit of the enormous protests that sprang to life in February over Walker s proposal to ban collective bargaining is stronger than ever. Thousands of people descended upon the Capitol this week to protest both Monday s State Supreme Court decision to reinstate the collective bargaining ban and the governor s proposed two-year budget, which includes hundreds of millions of dollars in cuts and is currently moving through the legislature.'

http://www.heise.de/tp/artikel/34/34942/1.html

http://www.ausgestrahlt.de/startseite/artikel//ausgestrahlt-fodert-gruenes-nein

As NATO tells the world to prepare for a post-Gaddafi era, coalition bombs continue to blitz the Libyan capital. Gasoline queues snake through Tripoli with fuel in short supply. A scenario made worse with tankers a regular target for air strikes.

Remote Control Killing Like Sport

By Stephen Lendman

It s America s newest sport. From distant command centers, far from target sights, sounds, and smells, operators dismissively ignore human carnage showing up as computer screen blips little different from video game images. The difference, of course, is people die, mostly noncombatants.

CIA sending armed drones into Yemen

Washington Post

The CIA is expected to begin operating armed drones over Yemen, expanding the hunt for Al Qaeda operatives in a country where counterterrorism efforts have been disrupted by political chaos, US officials said. The plan to use CIA-operated Predator and other unmanned aircraft reflects a decision by President Obama that the Al Qaeda threat in Yemen has grown so serious that patrols by US military drones are not enough...

Obamas war on the rule of law

Reason Reason
by A. Barton Hinkle

06/14/11

With Obama s election, the nation supposedly said goodbye to [the Bush regime s audacious policies of lawbreaking]. The clouds broke, the fog lifted, and the sunlight of civil liberties once again bathed the nation in its golden hue. Except: Nothing like that happened. Instead, the Obama administration adopted every single one of the policies listed above. Some of the more principled progressives have voiced outrage and a sense of betrayal. The more partisan types have politely averted their gaze. But Obama has not confined his disdain for the rule of law to the Bush inheritance. He has carved out new realms for it...

Bachmann Calls for Huge Corporate Tax Cut Alongside Tax Increase for the Working Poor

Pat Garofalo, ThinkProgress: 'Several of the 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls have laid out economic platforms that would include huge cuts in the corporate tax rate. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) called for lowering the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent, while former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) went a step further, calling for a cut to 15 percent. In an interview published today by the Wall Street Journal, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) decided to one-up both Romney and Pawlenty, calling for a reduction in the corporate tax rate to 9 percent. Adding insult to injury, Bachmann wants to pair that huge tax cut with giant tax reductions for the rich, as well as a tax increase on the working poor.'

JP Morgan Records Largest Profit Ever, While Community Devastated by Its Predatory Lending Sheds 1,000 Workers

Zaid Jilani, ThinkProgress: 'One of the many tragic stories of the Great Recession involves Jefferson County, Alabama. As Matt Taibbi explained in an article in Rolling Stone last year, mega bank JP Morgan Chase used a predatory refinancing deal on sewer bonds to reap billions while the local area was financially devastated. Now, Jefferson County, still reeling from the effects of JP Morgan s dirty deals, is moving to place nearly 1,000 public workers on administrative leave without pay, as the state Legislature failed last week to come to the municipality s aid with any fiscal support. In doing so, the county hopes to save 'just over $12 million.' Yet while the public workers of Jefferson County will soon face the prospect of losing their wages and livelihoods through no fault of their own, JP Morgan Chase continues to rake in lavish profits.'

Down in the Ditch

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: 'There is never a shortage of Stupid in American politics, but by normal standards, our recent history has been pretty spectacular. Rep. Anthony Weiner is caught in what could very easily go down in history as the single most absurd sex scandal to ever unfold. The Republican leadership continues to play chicken with the debt limit, making even the titans of the financial industry nervous. Michele Bachmann is being taken seriously by the 'mainstream' news media after the first GOP debate ... and as far as Stupid goes, really, that s all you need to say. Sometimes, however, the Stupid skyrockets to new and heretofore unknown heights. It takes a special kind of purebred dunderhead to raise the benchmark, and in that spirit, I give you Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), who opined last week that once Iraq becomes a rich and prosperous country, they should repay the United States for the money spent on the invasion and occupation. Let that sink in for a moment.'

US-Pakistani Relations: The Tail Still Wags the Dog

Melvin A. Goodman, Truthout: 'The US-Pakistani relationship is one of the most complicated bilateral relationships in the world. Since the start of the cold war, the United States has needed support from the Islamabad government and, as a result, has ignored Pakistani perfidy. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the United States needed secret bases in Pakistan for U-2 reconnaissance flights over the Soviet Union and, therefore, disregarded Pakistani military dictatorships. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the United States needed logistical support for its secret opening to China and overlooked human rights violations in Pakistan. In the 1980s, Pakistan served as a conduit for US assistance to the anti-Soviet mujihadeen forces and, therefore, ignored Pakistan s secret development of nuclear weapons.'

Koch Brothers Led Fight to Defend Formaldehyde Despite Carcinogenic Evidence

Video

Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzalez and Ralph Nader, Democracy Now!: 'The government has added formaldehyde to a list of known carcinogens, despite years of lobbying by the chemical industry. Formaldehyde is found in plastics and often used in plywood, particle board, mortuaries and hair salons. The government also said Friday that styrene, which is used in boats, bathtubs and in disposable foam plastic cups and plates, may cause cancer. The conservative billionaire Koch brothers have led the lobbying effort against labeling formaldehyde as a carcinogen. Georgia-Pacific, a subsidiary of Koch Industries, is one of the country s top producers of formaldehyde. We get reaction from longtime consumer advocate Ralph Nader.'

War costs soar, yet more war than we bargained for

Those hoping Obama would have been even slightly less belligerent than the last president must be truly disappointed now. I know I am. First, we learn the Libya war, where airstrikes have again intensified, is costing more than previously estimated. Not really much of a surprise. But the earlier Pentagon projection of $40 million a month was off by at least $20 million...

Suppressing the Vote in Wisconsin

Michael Berkowitz, Truthout: 'Fred Risser is a veteran Wisconsin state senator. Actually, he is the longest-serving state legislator in American political history. Bald and bearded, quick to laugh, he is the genial grandfather at the family picnic. But Risser was not feeling genial, lately. May 19 he had been recognized to speak and was making a point on the floor of the Wisconsin State Senate. Risser was questioning the constitutionality and ethics of the Republican-sponsored voter suppression bill, AB7. However, State Senate President Mike Ellis, the new majority leader, cut him off - loudly, practically screaming, talking right over him - instead of considering Risser s important legal questions. In over 50 years of serving in the legislature, Risser said that he hadn t seen anything like it.'

Auditors Says Missing Money Meant for Iraq May Have Been Stolen

Paul Richter, The Los Angeles Times: 'After the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003, the George W. Bush administration flooded the conquered country with so much cash to pay for reconstruction and other projects in the first year that a new unit of measurement was born. Pentagon officials determined that one giant C-130 Hercules cargo plane could carry $2.4 billion in shrink-wrapped bricks of $100 bills. They sent an initial full planeload of cash, followed by 20 other flights to Iraq by May 2004 in a $12-billion haul that U.S. officials believe to be the biggest international cash airlift of all time. This month, the Pentagon and the Iraqi government are finally closing the books on the program that handled all those Benjamins. But despite years of audits and investigations, U.S. Defense officials still cannot say what happened to $6.6 billion in cash - enough to run the Los Angeles Unified School District or the Chicago Public Schools for a year, among many other things.'

Ninety Percent of Petraeus' 'Taliban' Captures Were Civilians

Gareth Porter, Inter Press Service: 'During his intensive initial round of media interviews as commander in Afghanistan in August 2010, Gen. David Petraeus released figures to the news media that claimed spectacular success for raids by Special Operations Forces: in a 90-day period from May through July, SOF units had captured 1,355 rank and file Taliban, killed another 1,031, and killed or captured 365 middle or high-ranking Taliban. But it turns out that more than 80 percent of those called captured Taliban fighters were released within days of having been picked up, because they were found to have been innocent civilians, according to official U.S. military data.'

Time to get out of Afghanistan

Campaign For Liberty Campaign For Liberty
by Doug Bandow
06/13/11

After September 11 the U.S. intervened in Afghanistan to kill Osama bin Laden, dismantle al-Qaeda, and punish the Taliban. Washington finally has succeeded at all three tasks. It is time for American forces to come home. For many people Afghanistan started out as the good war. Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda turned Taliban-ruled Afghanistan into a sanctuary as they plotted the death of thousands of Americans. The Central Asian state - in contrast to Iraq - was an appropriate target for military retaliation...

GOP-Style Democrats Moving to Sell Out Poor, Liberals: Lessons From the DC Budget Fight

Art Levine, Truthout: 'It s been less than two weeks since a guerilla campaign by local activists managed to restore about 20 percent of $131 million in budget cuts targeting Washington, DC's, neediest residents - with little help from the mainstream media, which essentially ignored a looming shutdown of the city's shelter, poor and disabled aid services that could have thrown thousands into the street. The city s reluctant Democratic leadership only bowed at the last minute to under-the-radar pressure to reverse some of the most obvious, draconian cuts with $27 million in restorations, especially services to the homeless. Other sources familiar with the lobbying to restore homeless funding point out that some leaders in the local downtown business community were concerned about the impact on the city s image and tourism.'

Truthout s Jeffrey Kaye and Jason Leopold report on new documents they exclusively obtained from a top counterterrorism official that, for the first time, reveals the existence of a secret Defense Department intelligence unit charged with tracking Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda prior to 9/11, which knew that the terrorist group wanted to strike the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
