The war against 'isolationism'

Antiwar.com
by Justin Raimondo

06/22/11

For the first time since the 1970s, the American ruling class is frightened to death that its global empire is in danger of being subverted on the home front by an 'isolationist' movement, and elite pundits are up in arms. ... Our elites have neither the will, nor the intention, of shrinking the US presence in the world: they are far too invested, politically and psychologically, in the idea that Washington is and must remain the center of the known universe...

Our corporate military

C4SS Center for a Stateless Society
by Kevin Carson

06/20/11

The military is almost a parody of American corporate culture. It s riddled with hierarchy, with Taylorist/Weberian bureaucratic work rules and standard operating procedures, and all the irrationality that goes with them. The only difference is, the pointy-haired bosses wear a different kind of uniform. If you have ever seen the movie 'Brazil,' or read Dilbert on a regular basis, you get the idea...

Wisconsin: Wird daraus eine landesweite Bewegung? Can Wisconsin uprising grow nationwide movement?

Kerry, McCain push ex post facto legalization of Libya war

Loveland Reporter-Herald

06/21/11

Two top senators on Tuesday unveiled a resolution giving President Barack Obama limited authority in the 3-month-old war against Libya, warning that the drastic step of cutting off funds for the military operation would be a lifeline to a weakened Moammar Gadhafi. Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, D-Mass., and John McCain of Arizona, the leading Republican on the Armed Services Committee, introduced the bipartisan resolution that would allow the mission to continue but would impose a one-year limit on the NATO-led operation, a period McCain said is 'more than enough time to finish the job...'

Obama thumbs nose at rule of law

We all know President Barack Obama has no regard for the U.S. Constitution. His latest hypocritical thumbing of the nose at our charter document brings that point home succinctly. The Nation

American planes are taking off, they are entering Libyan air space, they are locating targets, they are dropping bombs, and the bombs are killing and injuring people and destroying things. It is war. Strange definitions of war and peace

Freedom s Phoenix
by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

06/20/11

Now that more than 90 days have passed since the president began bombing Libya, no one can seriously claim that the administration has complied with the clear requirements of the 1973 War Powers Resolution. In a remarkable act of chutzpah, the administration sent to Congress its response to the growing concern over its abuse of war powers. Its argument, in a nutshell, is that the War Powers Resolution is not relevant because US armed forces are not actually engaged in hostilities because Libya is so militarily weak it cannot fight back!

President Obama has claimed this war is not a war. He even claims it doesn t rise to the level of 'hostilities' as envisioned by the War Powers Act. This is laughable. By the President s reasoning Pearl Harbor didn t even rise to the level of 'hostility'...

Mourning in America

The Weekly Standard

Trying to stay upbeat? Avoid the business section. Unemployment stands at 9.1 percent. Growth is narcoleptic. The housing market has not hit bottom. Fears of a Greek default are roiling markets. The deficit is running more than a trillion dollars for the third year in a row and won t be shrinking anytime soon. A U.S. fiscal crisis may be only a few years (or months) away. President Obama, meanwhile, seems to think our problems would be solved if only we banned ATMs and built solar-powered bullet trains... (for publication 06/27/11)

Learning From 'Solidarity Unionism at Starbucks'

Adam Kader, Working In These Times: 'The decline of unions does not mean the end of the labor movement. Indeed, the last few years have seen a proliferation of new kinds of worker organizations and workers' rights campaigns. Some of the most exciting of late have been conducted by community-based groups (rather than workplace-based unions), such as the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and those part of the National Domestic Workers Alliance. In Solidarity Unionism at Starbucks, a recent pamphlet published by PM Press, Daniel Gross and Staughton Lynd highlight an increasingly important feature of todays labor movement - nonunion workers using direct action strategies protected by the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) - while examining the Industrial Workers of the Worlds (IWW)s ongoing efforts to organize Starbucks.'

Source of Missing Jobs in America Found: Forced Laborers

Maryam Al-Zoubi, Campaign for Americas Future: 'With unemployment at a near historic high in the United States, could you imagine any American company bringing in foreign workers to work for them below the minimum wage and with no benefits? Most people would say no. But can you imagine those same Americans forcing foreign workers to stay here, with no pay, and constant abuse? That is actually happening in this country today. Forced labor is a real phenomenon in the United States agriculture business. Without awareness and investigation into where our supplies come from and who businesses are hiring, the American people become unwitting complicit supporters of labor trafficking. Monday June 13th, in anticipation of the reauthorization of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA), U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (NJ-04) held a Senate committee hearing and panel discussion to review the success and needed improvements of the law.'

Moral Degeneracy and Violence in the 'Kill Team' Photos

Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: 'War, violence and death have become the organizing principle of governance and culture in the United States as we move into the second decade of the 21st century. Lacking a language for the social good, the very concept of the social as a space in which justice, equality, social protections and a responsibility to the other mediate everyday life is being refigured through a spectacle of violence and cruelty. Under such circumstances, ethical considerations and social costs are removed from market-driven policies and values just as images of human suffering are increasingly abstracted from not only their social and political contexts, but also the conditions that make such suffering possible. Moreover, as public issues collapse into privatized considerations, matters of agency, responsibility and ethics are now framed within the discourse of extreme individualism.'

This Hero Didn t Stand a Chance

Chris Hedges, Truthdig: 'Tim DeChristopher is scheduled to be sentenced in a Salt Lake City courtroom by U.S. District Judge Dee Benson on July 26. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $750,000 fine for fraudulently bidding in December 2008 on parcels of land, including areas around eastern Utah s national parks, which were being sold off by the Bush administration to the oil and natural gas industry. As Bidder No. 70, he drove up the prices of some of the bids and won more than a dozen other parcels for $1.8 million. The government is asking Judge Benson to send DeChristopher to prison for four and a half years. His prosecution is evidence that our moral order has been turned upside down.'

Business as Usual on Steroids

Karen J. Greenberg, TomDispatch: 'In the seven weeks since the killing of Osama bin Laden, pundits and experts of many stripes have concluded that his death represents a marker of genuine significance in the story of America s encounter with terrorism. Peter Bergen, a bin Laden expert, ... wrote, 'Killing bin Laden is the end of the war on terror.'... We can just sort of announce that right now.' Yet you wouldnt know it in Washington where, if anything, the Obama administration and Congress have interpreted the killing of al-Qaeda s leader as a virtual license to double down on every 'front' in the war on terror.'

What British taxpayers costs to bomb Libya

Ian Katz, The Guardian

Smoke rises after a Nato air strike on the Libyan capital, Tripoli
This weekend provided sobering reminders of the human and financial cost of the three-month bombing campaign against Muammar Gaddafis regime: in Tripoli several civilians appeared to have been killed by a Nato strike; while in London the Treasury chief secretary, Danny Alexander, admitted that the bill for Britain s contribution could run to 'hundreds of millions of pounds'. Until now the UK government has shrouded the issue of how much taxpayers are spending on bombing Libya in the sort of secrecy and obfuscation you d expect if you asked the current location of all its Trident submarines. Anyone who has the temerity to ask how much Britain s Libya campaign is costing is reassured that it is all being paid for from Treasury reserves, so we needn t worry our pretty little heads. But anyone who has lost their EMA or disability living allowance could quite justifiably wonder why cash can be found for bombs but not for them.

The American Spring

While the neocons are hoping 'American leadership' exercised in Libya (and possibly Syria) will co-opt the Arab Spring, what they really fear is an American Spring. And just as they never foresaw the Arab awakening and the overthrow of US-supported dictators in Egypt and Tunisia, so they are blind to the coming American awakening -- a massive grassroots rebellion against the political status quo right here in this country...

The extraordinary rendition program run under both the Clinton and Bush administrations is a perfect example of unchecked government power run amuck. 'How much does the State weigh?' Josef Stalin asked an underling who had been ordered to extract a confession from an enemy of his regime. Stalin understood that, given enough time, agents of State-sanctioned cruelty can break any man. Thomas J. Congressional duplicity and lawlessness

Freedom s Phoenix
by Stephen Lendman

06/19/11

In Washington, hypocrisy and duplicity substitute for resolute action to obey international and constitutional law. In fact, they are mere artifacts long ago discarded to advance Americas imperium. All Washington s wars are illegal. International law permits them only in self-defense. Constitutional law only lets Congress, not the president, declare or wage them overtly, covertly or any other way for any reason unless America was attacked...

Promoting militarism, hiding bloodshed

In These Times
by David Sirota

06/18/11

In a breathless story somehow presented as a groundbreaking revelation, The New York Times recently reported that the Pentagon is - shocker! - using all sorts of media channels to market itself to the nation s children. Though the Times presents this as a brand-new development, it is nothing of the sort. The armed forces have spent the last three decades carefully constructing a child-focused Military-Entertainment Complex, which has long had the Pentagon subsidizing everything from video games to movies - most of which glorify militarism to kids...

The $113 Billion Hole: Ten Things America Gave Up This Year to Pay for the War in Afghanistan

Zaid Jilani, ThinkProgress: 'The war is affecting more than just Western soldiers and their families and Afghan citizens. It has become a costly drain on our nation s treasury; the money that is being spent on the war represents resources that are being drained away from important domestic priorities in a nation with sky-high unemployment and crumbling infrastructure. Using data from the National Priorities Project, ThinkProgress calculated ten investments America could've afforded if it didn't spend $113 billion - the allotment made in Fiscal Year 2011 - on the war in Afghanistan.'

Akiba Solomon and Stokely Baksh, Colorlines: 'At the estimated cost of $1 trillion, the War on Drugs has triggered the mass incarceration, mostly of black and brown people through harsh penalties for non-violent drug violations like simple possession... This failed war has destroyed mothers, fathers, children, grandparents - whole communities. One thing it hasn t done: End the use and sale of drugs.'

Chamber of Commerce, Wrong Again

Donald Cohen, Cry Wolf Project: 'Every year since 2003, the California Chamber of Commerce publishes its hit list of proposed legislation it labels 'job killers.' The list includes legislation to protect consumers, workers and the environment from irresponsible business practices, or raise revenues to fund public services, or support middle and working class families. The Chamber released their 2011 list on May 25. Topping the list of 29 so-called 'job killer bills' are restrictions on the use of Styrofoam that is filling landfills and polluting our rivers and oceans. The list includes proposed legislation to index the minimum wage, decrease greenhouse gases, and raise desperately needed revenue for local governments.'

Hoher Krankenstand von Leiharbeitnehmern - Leiharbeit kein Zukunftsmodell
für unsere Gesellschaft

"Zeitarbeit macht krank", meldet die Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) in ihrem
Gesundheitsreport 2011.
unsere Gesellschaft."?? Meldung bei der IG Metall vom 12.07.2011. Die
TK-Studie ist dort verlinkt.
http://www.igmetall.de/cps/rde/xchg/SID-4F23F789-2244D256/internet/style.xsl/hoher-krankenstand-von-leiharbeitnehmern-8075.htm

So sei 2010 jeder
Leiharbeiter in Deutschland durchschnittlich 15 Tage krankgeschrieben
gewesen. Bei "konventionellen Arbeitnehmern" seien es hingegen gut 3,5
Tage weniger gewesen.
