What British taxpayers costs to bomb Libya

Ian Katz, The Guardian

Smoke rises after a Nato air strike on the Libyan capital, Tripoli
This weekend provided sobering reminders of the human and financial cost of the three-month bombing campaign against Muammar Gaddafis regime: in Tripoli several civilians appeared to have been killed by a Nato strike; while in London the Treasury chief secretary, Danny Alexander, admitted that the bill for Britain s contribution could run to 'hundreds of millions of pounds'. Until now the UK government has shrouded the issue of how much taxpayers are spending on bombing Libya in the sort of secrecy and obfuscation you d expect if you asked the current location of all its Trident submarines. Anyone who has the temerity to ask how much Britain s Libya campaign is costing is reassured that it is all being paid for from Treasury reserves, so we needn t worry our pretty little heads. But anyone who has lost their EMA or disability living allowance could quite justifiably wonder why cash can be found for bombs but not for them.

Operation Fast and Furious a Deadly Govt Failure

The American Spring
by Justin Raimondo

While the neocons are hoping 'American leadership' exercised in Libya (and possibly Syria) will co-opt the Arab Spring, what they really fear is an American Spring. And just as they never foresaw the Arab awakening and the overthrow of US-supported dictators in Egypt and Tunisia, so they are blind to the coming American awakening -- a massive grassroots rebellion against the political status quo right here in this country...

At the mercy of the state

Campaign For Liberty
by Tom Parker

The extraordinary rendition program run under both the Clinton and Bush administrations is a perfect example of unchecked government power run amuck. There has been no meaningful oversight and no accountability. No government employee has been punished; no government agency has been forced to make restitution to those wrongly impacted. In the absence of accountability, there is absolutely nothing to stop the government doing this again and again, every time it feels threatened...

The battle over immigration is about to affect us all in a big way

Liberty For All
by Chris Calabrese

Despite a significant error rate, pleas from multiple sectors of American business, and the heightened risk of identity theft, Congressman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) is dead-set on pushing legislation that would make the flawed E-Verify system mandatory for every U.S. worker and today [June 14] he introduced H.R. 2164, the Lawful Workforce Act, which would do just that. This initiative is one of the top Republican priorities for this Congress...

When the state breaks a man
by William Norman Grigg

'How much does the State weigh?' Josef Stalin asked an underling who had been ordered to extract a confession from an enemy of his regime. Stalin understood that, given enough time, agents of State-sanctioned cruelty can break any man. Thomas J. Ball, who committed suicide by self-immolation on the steps of New Hampshire s Cheshire County Courthouse on June 15, was a man who had been broken by the State...

Congressional duplicity and lawlessness

Freedom s Phoenix
by Stephen Lendman

In Washington, hypocrisy and duplicity substitute for resolute action to obey international and constitutional law. In fact, they are mere artifacts long ago discarded to advance Americas imperium. All Washington s wars are illegal. International law permits them only in self-defense. Constitutional law only lets Congress, not the president, declare or wage them overtly, covertly or any other way for any reason unless America was attacked...

Obama s war is peace

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Sheldon Richman

Apparently bombing military forces and government facilities while taking sides in a foreign country s civil war no longer constitutes participation in hostilities. Obama apparently read Orwell s 1984 ... and learned the wrong lesson. Thus the president thumbs his nose at a lawsuit filed by several members of Congress aimed at forcing him to comply with the law...

Promoting militarism, hiding bloodshed

In These Times
by David Sirota

In a breathless story somehow presented as a groundbreaking revelation, The New York Times recently reported that the Pentagon is - shocker! - using all sorts of media channels to market itself to the nation s children. Though the Times presents this as a brand-new development, it is nothing of the sort. The armed forces have spent the last three decades carefully constructing a child-focused Military-Entertainment Complex, which has long had the Pentagon subsidizing everything from video games to movies - most of which glorify militarism to kids...

When the Respectable Become Extremists The Extremists Become Respectable

By James Petras

Extremism in all of its forms permeates Western regimes and finds its justification and rationalization in the respectable media whose job is to indoctrinate civil society and turn citizens into voluntary accomplices to extremism.
