Evidence of an American Plutocracy: The Larry Summers Story

Matthew Skomarovsky, LittleSis: "Larry Summers' path to the Obama administration, and his record within it, are symptomatic of a new American plutocracy, and his new job at Harvard will keep the gears of corruption greased. Summers rose to power under the protective wing of Wall Street and Democratic Party mogul Robert Rubin. He aggressively advanced Rubin's program of financial deregulation and faithfully rescued his cronies when deregulation went wrong. Despite the economic catastrophes these policies have contributed to, Summers and other Rubinites have continued their political ascendancy in recent years, filling top positions in the Obama administration."

Rewriting the 'Tragedy of the Commons'

Bill McKibben, YES! Magazine: "It was two years before the first Earth Day in 1970 when Garrett Hardin penned the famous essay 'Tragedy of the Commons,' and it fit a certain bleak and despairing mood of the time. Paul Ehrlich had just published The Population Bomb, a Malthusian account of a world overwhelmed by sheer numbers of people. Against the backdrop of that gloom, Hardin's theory came as another dose of bad news, 'proving' that we also had no hope of controlling our appetite for natural resources. Since no one owned the oceans or the atmosphere, we would inevitably fish and pollute them into oblivion. Hardin offered a few suggestions, but his title summed it up: we were witnessing a tragedy whose script could not be revised."

Manifest Haiti: Monsanto's Destiny

Ryan Stock, Truthout: "'A fabulous Easter gift,' commented Monsanto Director of Development Initiatives Elizabeth Vancil. Nearly 60,000 seed sacks of hybrid corn seeds and other vegetable seeds were donated to post-earthquake Haiti by Monsanto. In observance of World Environment Day, June 4, 2010, roughly 10,000 rural Haitian farmers gathered in Papaye to march seven kilometers to Hinche in celebration of this gift. Upon arrival, these rewarded farmers took their collective Easter baskets of more than 400 tons of vegetable seeds and burned them all. 'Long live the native maize seed!' they chanted in unison. 'Monsanto's GMO [genetically modified organism] and hybrid seed violate peasant agriculture!'"

Why should God bless America?

by Al Duncan

For centuries hypocrites, professing to be Christians, have defamed God and Christianity by their lies, thievery, drunkenness, adultery, warmongering and all their ungodly ways. But the true Christian, whom Christ characterized as his disciples by their love one for another, were also commissioned to share his love and way of life with others, are now being marginalized and constrained to a state of fear. How the Power of Myth Keeps Us Mired in War

Ira Chernus, TomDispatch: "When I try to figure out why we are still in Afghanistan, though every ounce of logic says we ought to get out, an unexpected conversation I had last year haunts me. Doing neighborhood political canvassing, I knocked on the door of a cheerful man who was just about to tune in to his favorite radio show: Rush Limbaugh. He was kind enough to let me stay and we talked. Conservatives are often the nicest people - that's what I told him - the ones you'd like to have as neighbors. Then I said: I bet you're always willing to help your neighbors when they need it. Absolutely, he replied. So why, I asked, don't you to want to help out people across town who have the same needs, even if they're strangers?"

It is tragic that six people lost their lives and many more were wounded by a fanatic in Arizona. Indiscriminate killing is a terrible thing. There is no way we can truly comprehend the motives behind this act, nor appreciate the full extent of the pain and heartache suffered by those affected. But behind the pathos surrounding this crime is an ugly truth. Though we profess indignant sorrow for those who died at the hands of a madman in Arizona, we willfully ignore the deaths of innocents which occur every day as a result of our own government's foreign policies...

The Tucson massacre is now serving as the pretext for new Federal speech laws. Now I don?t want to come off like some kind of paranoid, anti-government nutjob, but there is much potential for governmental abuse in such legal language as 'to incite violence.' But that?s one of the many nifty perks of being a ruler. You?re in the unique position of simply asserting causal links between acts of violence and expressions of speech while never having to worry about being held accountable for the acts of violence carried out at your command on nearly a daily basis...

Obamas regulation

John Stossel's Take

Managing regulatory bureaucracy is like pushing string. Regulators want to regulate. Just last year, federal bureaucrats alone added 80,000 pages of brand new rules. Wikileaks Cables Show Obama Sent More Troops To Afghanistan Despite Warnings

Mike Ludwig, Truthout: "Secret diplomatic cables recently released by WikiLeaks show that the Obama administration increased the United States' military presence in Afghanistan despite warnings that the surge could make 2010 the most difficult and bloody since the 2001 invasion. US Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry issued several cables in 2009 detailing serious concerns about the Afghan government and its leader, President Hamid Karzai. Eikenberry claimed that Karzai 'is not an adequate strategic partner' and 'continues to shun responsibility for any burden, whether defense, governance or development.'"

In 1961, Dwight Eisenhower famously identified the military-industrial complex, warning that the growing fusion between corporations and the armed forces posed a threat to democracy. Judged 50 years later, Ike's frightening prophecy actually understates the scope of our modern system-and the dangers of the perpetual march to war it has put us on.

Blair 'Misled MPs on Legality of War': Law Chief

UK government blocks release of Blair Iraq notes

British authorities have refused to publish notes that Tony Blair sent to President George W. Bush before the Iraq war, prompting a complaint Tuesday from the chief of a public inquiry into the divisive conflict.

http://bit.ly/ePkPKP

Secret Tony Blair and George Bush Iraq letters were kept out of official records

A transcript of evidence given behind closed doors by Matthew Rycroft, the former prime minister's private secretary, and released by the inquiry yesterday shows that references to the notes, sent in the year running up to the March 2003 invasion, were removed from official records.

UK: I warned Campbell on dossier - official

A former government official told the Iraq inquiry today that he had warned against publishing the government's "dodgy dossier" but was ignored. The controversial dossier formed the basis of the government's case for invasion and contained the now infamous claim that Iraq could launch weapons of mass destruction at Britain in "45 minutes."

Government tampers with juries and tramples justice

In government courts, the prosecutor and judge are on the same team and the defense attorney?s rules are set by the institution that is trying to fine or imprison the defendant. Why government cannot ?make us safe? by mandating security

US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) Freedom's Phoenix
by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

01/17/11

Politicians and a complicit media have conditioned many citizens to view government as our protector, leading to more demands for government action whenever tragedies occur. But this impulse is at odds with the best American traditions of self-reliance and individualism, and it also leads to bad laws and the loss of liberty. Remember, liberty only has meaning if we still believe in it when terrible things happen and more government security is demanded. Government cannot make us safe by mandating security any more than than it can make us prosperous by decreeing an end to poverty...

Extremist Killing Is as American as Apple Pie: Murders Grow on the Far Right Four Decades After Martin Luther King

Stephan Salisbury, TomDispatch: "The landscape of America is littered with bodies. They've been gunned down in Tucson, shot to death at the Pentagon, and blown away at the Holocaust Museum, as well as in Wichita, Knoxville, Pittsburgh, Brockton, and Okaloosa County, Florida. Total body count for these incidents: 19 dead, 26 wounded. Not much, you might say, when taken in the context of about 30,000 gun-related deaths annually nationwide."

http://www.truth-out.org/extremist-killing-is-american-apple-pie-murders-grow-far-right-four-decades-after-martin-luther-king

MLK Was a Working-Class Hero

Dick Meister, Truthout: "The struggles of workers for union rights are often considered to be of no great importance. Dr. King knew better. He knew that the right to unionization is one of the most important civil rights. Virtually his last act was in support of that right, for he was killed by an assassin's bullet on April 4, 1968, as he was preparing to lead strikers in yet another demonstration."

http://www.truth-out.org/mlk-was-a-working-class-hero66827

We As A People Will Get to the Promised Land

Ellen Dannin, Truthout: "For decades, this has been the richest country on earth, with the capacity to give everyone a decent life, an education and a good job - and yet it is home to millions who live in poverty. King warned us against cashing in our engagement as citizens building a democracy for a passive role as customers. He said, 'Enlarged material powers spell enlarged peril - if there is not proportionate growth of the soul.'"

http://www.truth-out.org/we-a-people-will-get-to-promised-land-poverty-inequality-and-justice66832

Remembering the Real Martin Luther King

Stephen Zunes, Truthout: "Several years ago, at a forum honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., some participants wanted to take the opportunity to make a statement opposing the Iraq War. The organizers objected, saying they did not want to detract from the message honoring King's memory. Few who ever knew King and his work, however, could miss the irony of the organizers' objections, for there is no question that had King still been alive he would have spoken out forcefully against the war, as he did all war."

http://www.truth-out.org/remembering-real-martin-luther-king66903

The Invisible King

Tom H. Hastings, Truthout: "You watch. Over the weekend and on Monday, the Hallmarked memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be sanitized and blackwashed until he is no more than a sentimental husk hoping that little children of all races will one day be able to play together. Then you'll see shots of just that, as if to indicate, 'Well, thanks, that's all done, nice historical figure. Bye.' One of these years, they will probably launch the USS Martin Luther King Jr., a spanking new destroyer, or perhaps they will name a class of drone aircraft the 'MLK Ground Dominators.'"

http://www.truth-out.org/the-invisible-king66858

21st Century Segregation: Inverting King's Dream

Paul Thomas, The Daily Censored: "Brian Jones has asked us to pause during the 2011 MLK Day to consider King's reaction to the achievement gap that persists well into the twenty-first century, suggesting that education policy begun under George W. Bush?No Child Left Behind (NCLB) - and accelerated under Barack Obama works against King's dream."

http://www.truth-out.org/21st-century-segregation-inverting-kings-dream66881

It's Still the Same Old Story: From Guns to Nukes

Lawrence S. Wittner, History News Network: "The discussion of the Tucson tragedy should be familiar, as we witness similar massacres in U.S. schools, shopping centers, and other public places played out periodically. Each time, the NRA and other gun apologists tell us that the easy accessibility of firearms, including assault weapons, had nothing to do with it. Indeed, they argue that the key to our safety is to obtain more guns."

China's president says dollar should no longer be world's top currency

China's president today raised grave questions over the future of the dollar by claiming it should no longer be used as the world's reserve currency. Hu Jintao said that using the American currency as the default for international trade and investment was a 'product of the past'.

The Danger of the Military-industrial Complex

By Rupert Cornwell

The US by itself accounts for roughly half of military spending worldwide. How much better if some of that money would be used to improve the country's education and infrastructure, or provide health care for all, or increase foreign aid, rather than on protecting America from threats that geography alone renders illusory.

Januar 2011

--------

28. Januar 2011

Russ Feingold: Defender of the Constitution

The Nation
by John Nichols

01/13/11

Russ Feingold was a different kind of senator?more committed to progressive principles than to a party, an internationalist who opposed free-trade deals because they served multinational corporations rather than multinational communities, a stalwart defender of the Constitution whose commitment to civil liberties and regard for the requirement that wars be declared by Congress led him to stand alone against presidents and colleagues...

The Evils of the Drug War

Most everyone is familiar with the disastrous consequences of the war on drugs: drug gangs, drug lords, drug suppliers, gang wars, muggings, robberies, thefts, corruption of judges, prosecutors, and law-enforcement officials, murders, assassinations, overcrowded jails, asset forfeiture, and on and on. The fact is that nothing good is produced by the war on drugs. All the results are bad...

Central Banking Tsunami

The economy will grow by three to four percent in 2011, according to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, but unemployment will remain. Finally, banks are getting back to basics and making 'prudent loans,' instead of rash ones that led to the 'trouble' of 2008...
