US cant link accused Army private to Assange

Bradley Manning MSNBC

01/24/11

U.S. military officials tell NBC News that investigators have been unable to make any direct connection between a jailed army private suspected with leaking secret documents and Julian Assange, founder of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks. The officials say that while investigators have determined that Manning had allegedly unlawfully downloaded tens of thousands of documents onto his own computer and passed them to an unauthorized person, there is apparently no evidence he passed the files directly to Assange, or had any direct contact with the controversial WikiLeaks figure...

[According to Bradley Manning Support Network founder Mike Gogulski] 'Immediately following a rally by more than 150 supporters at Quantico last week, Brad was put on suicide watch for two days for reasons his counsel could only conclude were punitive ...'

Bush White House improperly held political briefings

USA Today

01/24/11

A federal agency is reporting that officials in President George W. Bush's White House improperly conducted political briefings on government property, and encouraged employees to get involved in campaigns, meaning that taxpayers footed the bill for political activity. 'As the 2006 election drew nearer, OPA (the White House Office of Political Affairs) became a partisan political organization,' reported the Office of Special Counsel, an advisory agency that reviews applications of the federal Hatch Act...

Scalia appears at Tea Party US House meeting

Los Angeles Times

01/24/11

Justice Antonin Scalia's appearance at a meeting organized by the House Tea Party caucus and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) on Monday provoked new cries from liberals and some academics that conservative justices are shedding the appearance of impartiality. The session, part of what Bachmann calls a series of constitutional seminars, was closed to the media. Lawmakers said Scalia advised them to read the Federalist Papers and to follow the Constitution as it was written...

America's Culture of Cruelty

Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: "The recent murderous acts of violence committed by Jared Lee Loughner in Arizona cannot be reduced to the mental instability of a young man out of touch with reality. Nor can such a horrendous act be reduced to a breakdown in civil discourse. Such rationales are too easy, and emulate what Frank Rich has called 'classic American denial.' There is a deeper order of politics behind this murderous act, one that the American public is inclined to ignore. More specifically, the general responses to this violent act are symptomatic of a society that separates private injuries from public considerations, refusing to connect individual acts to broader social considerations."

Ten minutes before the close of his show Friday night, the host whose willingness to highlight the high crimes and misdemeanors of George Bush and Dick Cheney electrified liberals during the darkest days of the previous administration, announced: 'This will be the last edition of Countdown. After a commercial break, Olbermann seemed to suggest that the decision --announced just four days before President Obama's State of the Union Address, a major moment for cable commentators -- had come as a surprise, at least to the host...

'Greatest Nation' Rhetoric Roars Back

Robert Jensen, Truthout: "[The] expression of American exceptionalism is unexceptional in US political history, but it roared back stronger than ever in 2010, especially in the rhetoric of the Tea Party movement. As it becomes harder to ignore the United States' decline as an economic power - which will limit the capacity for imperial marauding around the world - the inclination of most mainstream politicians to assert our greatness will intensify. Those of us with radical or progressive politics need to challenge these kinds of slogans when we talk with friends, family and co-workers.... It is neither churlish nor malevolent to want to honestly assess the accomplishments and failures of one's country. Rather, it is the obligation of every citizen."

Corporate and Congressional Disasters

Robert Weissman, Truthout: "Corporate crime and wrongdoing is an everyday fact of life in the United States and around the world. Still, the last year has been remarkable for a series of high-profile, deadly corporate disasters: the BP Deepwater Horizon catastrophe that killed 11 workers and spewed millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, the deadly explosion at Massey's Upper Big Branch mine and unintended acceleration of Toyota cars. You might think that these disasters, singly and together, would impel desperately needed legislative reform. You might think that, but if you did, you would be wrong. Despite blanket TV and newspaper coverage of the corporate wrongdoing in each case, despite deep public outrage and fear, despite public clamor for action to prevent the same things from happening, Congress has done - exactly nothing. And the situation is about to get worse."

Mercury Fillings A Health Threat?

BOSTON -- Ben Zander, the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, saw his career hit a dark note seven years ago."They told me it was Meniere's disease and there was nothing they could do about it," said Zander. Zander was suffering from an inner ear disease. It caused dizziness and vomiting. During concerts he would have to pass the baton to an assistant and leave the stage."It was devastating when my hearing went . It was ghastly. It could have been career-ending," explained Zander. He went from doctor to doctor, and no one could help. Then he was referred biological dentist Dr. G. Robert Evans of the Groton Wellness Dental Spa and Medical Center. Evans traced his symptoms to the amalgam fillings in his mouth. Fillings that were partly mercury. Evans removed 15 fillings immediately."Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive substance known to man. It is 1,000 times more toxic than lead, said Evans. After the removal of Zander's fillings, he has had, a miraculous recovery from his disease. All of the symptoms disappeared.....

Appell an Abgeordnete: Sagen Sie Nein!

On Anniversary of Citizens United Ruling, Calls for DOJ to Investigate Scalia and Thomas

Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, Democracy Now!: "Today marks the one-year anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, that opened the floodgates for unlimited corporate spending on election campaigns. We speak with Bob Edgar, the president of Common Cause, which has filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Justice urging it to investigate whether Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas should have recused themselves from the case last year because of a conflict of interest."

Corporations, Unions and the Value of Opposition

Ellen Dannin, Truthout: "Why have unions? Because the persistent problem of unlimited corporate power requires an effective counterbalance. The need for such a counterbalance is clear. We saw the effect of increasing corporate power in the 2010 elections. We see it in virtually every law considered by Congress and state legislatures. And we saw it in the period leading up to the 1929 stock market crash and the Great Depression. As corporations grow mightier, they are able to amass even greater power. Then, just as now, Supreme Court decisions made corporations unaccountable to their societies by removing limits on corrupting and destructive power wielded by corporations."

Court and Chevron's "Crude" Attacks Continue

Michael Winship, Truthout: "Joe Berlinger's back is against the wall. Last week the independent filmmaker, already facing crushing debt from legal bills, was dealt a major blow in his continuing fight against the third-largest company in America: Chevron. It's a battle that epitomizes the hardship individuals face trying to challenge corporate giants that punch back with a knockout force of high-powered lawyers and unlimited cash. What's more, Berlinger's struggle continues to raise serious First Amendment issues and - as we approach the first anniversary of the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision - throws yet another spotlight on the increasingly pro-business stance of the nation's legal system."

Does "Democracy" Still Mean Anything?

(And in Case It Does, What Is It?)

Zygmunt Bauman, Truthout: "Henry A. Giroux wonders how one can possibly explain 'the electoral sweep that just put the most egregious Republican Party candidates back in power?'... One is the successful creation of 'punitive justice and a theatre of cruelty' as the political formula accepted (or at least acceptable) by the majority of Americans. The other is the accelerated pace of 'social amnesia': The most outrageous misdemeanor of the rulers, not so long ago a cause of public outcry, is pushed aside or forgotten altogether in time for the midterm elections. But there is another possibility as well, one that is perhaps too gruesome for the future of democracy to be seriously broached. It is the possibility - nay, the likelihood - that the link between public agenda and private worries, the very hub of the democratic process, has been broken, with each of the two spheres rotating by now in mutually isolated spaces, set in motion by mutually unconnected and un-communicating (though certainly not independent!) factors and mechanisms."

Against state idolatry and the mystical view of the state

Downsize DC Downsize DC

The State is not a mystical entity possessed of magical powers. At best, it's merely a service provider, like Walmart, Exxon, and Microsoft, and it should be evaluated in the same way. But that's not how most of us think about The State. Instead, we think of it as being some mystical entity with magical powers...

What is Plan B if China dumps its U.S. debt?

When borrowing money it's always good to have a Plan B in case a big creditor pulls the plug. That should be true whether the sum is a few thousand dollars or about a trillion, the size of the United States government's debt to China.
