The shocking truth about the crackdown on Occupy

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2011/nov/25/shocking-truth-about-crackdown-occupy

--------

CIA won t disclose involvement in crackdowns on Occupy Wall Street

Many of the occupiers suspect the CIA has been aiding local law enforcement to try to thwart the movement. The Partnership for Civil Justice filed a Freedom of Information Act request to try to see if the CIA was involved in the OWS crackdowns, but the PCJF was denied the information. Is the CIA covering up evidence?

Hunger in America, By the Numbers

Travis Waldron and Pat Garofalo, ThinkProgresss: 'Last year, 17.2 million households in the United States were food insecure, the highest level on record, as the Great Recession continued to wreak havoc on families across the country. Of those 17.2 million households, 3.9 million included children. On Thanksgiving weekend, here s a look at hunger in America, as millions of Americans struggle to get enough to eat in the wake of the economic crisis."

This Thanksgiving, Let s Look Beyond Election Day

Robert Reich, Robert Reich s Blog: 'Most political analysis of America s awful economy focuses on whether it will doom President Obama s reelection or cause Congress to turn toward one party or the other. These are important questions, but we should really be looking at the deeper problems with which whoever wins in 2012 will have to deal.'

Mortgage Fraud Whistleblower at Wells Fargo Was Ignored, Punished

Michael Hudson, iWatch News: 'Darcy Parmer ran into trouble soon after she started her job as a fraud analyst at Wells Fargo Bank. Her bosses, she later claimed, were upset that she was, well, finding fraud?. Management, she claimed, ordered her to stop contacting the company s ethics hotline. In the end, she said, Wells Fargo forced her out of her job. Parmer isn t alone in claiming she was punished for objecting to fraud in the midst of the nation s home-loan boom.'

Occupy Everywhere: Next Steps for the Movement Against Corporate Power

Amy Goodman, Democracy NOW!: 'How does the Occupy Wall Street movement move from 'the outrage phase' to the 'hope phase,' and imagine a new economic model? In a Democracy Now! special broadcast, we bring you excerpts from a recent event that examined this question and much more.'

Occupy the Budget

Sarah Anderson, Truthout: 'How to pay for the crisis while making our nation more equitable, green, and secure. Some lawmakers are trying to give America the cartoon image of a penniless hobo, circa 1932, with holes in his pants and nothing but a cold can of beans for dinner. We are broke, they say, with no choice but to slash spending on public services. The truth is that we are a rich nation. We need to make big changes, of course. But we should see this crisis as an opportunity to harness the country s abundant resources in ways that will make us stronger.'

http://www.truth-out.org/occupy-budget/1322231255

The Wages of Economic Ignorance

Robert Skidelsky, Project Syndicate: 'Politicians are masters at 'passing the buck.' Everything good that happens reflects their exceptional talents and efforts; everything bad is caused by someone or something else. The economy is a classic field for this strategy. Three years after the global economy s near-collapse, the feeble recovery has already petered out in most developed countries, whose economic inertia will drag down the rest.'

The Jobs Crisis: What Did Roosevelt Do That Obama Should?

Martin Bennett and Richard Walker, Truthout: 'The original version of President Obama s increasingly embattled jobs plan aimed to provide a much-needed extension of unemployment benefits and a payroll tax cut for working Americans, but outlined only scarce measures to dent the catastrophic rate of unemployment. What we need today is a massive jobs program like the Works Progress Administration (WPA) launched by President Franklin Roosevelt.'

Dancing on the Supercommittee s Grave, Singing Hallelujah

Robert Naiman, Truthout: *The spectacle of Democrats and Republicans arguing about who is to 'blame' for the 'failure' of the 'supercommittee' is certainly tempting for many partisans, but any progressives who participate in the spectacle risk attacking their own interests to the degree that they promote the implicit assumption that the public interest would have been better served if the supercommittee had reached a deal.'

Spending tales

Timothy J. Taylor Authority!
by Timothy J Taylor

12/04/11

Few Americans were surprised when the so-called congressional 'Super-Committee' failed to come up with a recommendation to cut $1.2 trillion in government spending over the next ten years. The national debt right now today exceeds $15 trillion yet Congress can t even agree to cut $1.2 trillion in ten long years. The United States government is addicted to spending like a heroin addict is addicted to smack...

Giving Thanks for the Occupation, Election, Demonstrations

Leo Gerard, Campaign For America s Future: 'This week s holiday mandates giving thanks. For many Americans, that is complicated by the harsh years since 2008. There s the bitterness of lost jobs, foreclosed homes and diminished opportunity. There s the resentment over bailing out Wall Street, then watching banksters grant themselves sensational bonuses while denying Main Street loans to save businesses. There s the fear generated by county club conservatives demanding draconian cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?. The past two months, though, produced glimmers of hope - the occupation, the election and the mid-November demonstrations.'

Giving Thanks to Our Public Servants

William J. Astore, Truthout: 'Having served in the military for twenty years and having police officers and other civil servants in my family and among my closest friends, I d like to give thanks to our public servants on this Thanksgiving day. They sacrifice for us; sometimes they even put their lives on the line for us; and despite their flaws they generally uphold high standards?. That s precisely why it s a sad and tragic day for our country when armed citizen-lawmen are deployed by the powerful to disrupt and disperse the powerless, whether in Zuccotti Park or on the campuses of our colleges and universities.'
