Bill Moyers: 'Our Politicians Are Money Launderers in the Trafficking of Power and Policy'

Bill Moyers, Truthout: 'We hold elections, knowing they are unlikely to produce the policies favored by the majority of Americans. We speak, we write, we advocate - and those in power turn deaf ears and blind eyes to our deepest aspirations. We petition, plead, and even pray - yet the earth that is our commons, which should be passed on in good condition to coming generations, continues to be despoiled. We invoke the strain in our national DNA that attests to 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness' as the produce of political equality - yet private wealth multiplies as public goods are beggared.'

Lessons From the Original Occupation: Gina Ray, Wisconsin State Capitol Police

Mary Bottari, Truthout: 'On February 11, 2011, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker introduced a bill that would limit the collective bargaining rights of public employees, require 100 percent voter participation in union recertification and end the state s practice of withholding and reimbursing union dues. The bill was perceived as a death blow to public employee unions and prompted massive, sustained and peaceful protests inside and outside the Wisconsin State Capitol in the winter of 2011.'

Occupy the Koch Brothers - and Stop the American Nightmare

Isaiah J. Poole, Campaign for America s Future: 'The very name of a Washington conservative conference this weekend is the height of subterfuge. It s called the 'Defending the American Dream' conference, which is not about defending the actual American dreams of most Americans (the focus of our own 'Take Back the American Dream' conference), sponsored by Americans for Prosperity, which is not an organization that promotes what is needed for broad American prosperity.'

Assassination backlash

Los Angeles Times
by Andrew Cockburn

11/03/11

Clearly, the sentiment prevalent among our leaders is that eliminating particular enemy leaders is bound to have a beneficial effect. ... So, now that assassination is an official tool of U.S. foreign policy, along with trade embargoes and overseas aid, it is surely time for an open debate on whether it is indeed effective. Surprisingly for some, evidence based on hard numbers demonstrates unequivocally that the answer is no...

Statt Völkerrecht Mord und Totschlag: NATO fälscht Bilanz des Libyen-Krieges

3. November 2011

Romney foreign policy would be disastrous for America

At the end of the day, Romney s appointment of Walid Phares to his campaign staff and his comments on his policy towards Israel are indications of what we could expect from the foreign policy of a Romney Administration. At the very least, it would be a continuation of Bush/Obama foreign policies. At the worst, it would be an escalation of those policies. American can ill afford either...

Campaign Grows to Divest From 'Too Big to Fail' Banks to Local Banks, Credit Unions

Video

Amy Goodman, Democracy NOW!: 'As participants in the Occupy Wall Street movement continue protesting the record profits made by banks bailed out by taxpayer money, a group of grassroots activists are hitting America s largest banks - including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo - where it hurts most: the wallet. Dubbing this Saturday, Nov. 5 as 'Bank Transfer Day,' activists are urging people to move their money out of the banks deemed 'too big to fail' into local community banks and credit unions. Bank Transfer Day draws on an idea popularized by filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, economist Rob Johnson and columnist Arianna Huffington, among others. In 2010, they created the short film called 'Move Your Money,' which became a viral sensation. We speak with filmmaker Eugene Jarecki.'

Lakota Tribes 'Refuse to Cooperate' With Tar Sands Proponents

Jason Coppola, Truthout: 'As people gather to protest the greed and corruption of Wall Street in downtown Manhattan and throughout the world, the territories of indigenous peoples and nations have been the front lines of this conflict for a long, long, time. Clayton Thomas-Muller, of the Pukatawagan Cree Nation, is an anti-tar sands campaigner with the Indigenous Environmental Network, and is responsible for coordinating an indigenous team which operates both in the United States and Canada supporting locally led tactics and strategies aimed at stopping the Canadian tar sands expansion and its encroachment into traditional and treaty territories of first nations in Alberta and British Columbia.'

Poverty, conscientiousness, and broken families

Right-wingers should spend a lot more time reading left-wing ethnography of the poor. It may seem strange, but when leftist social scientists actually talk to and observe the poor, they confirm the stereotypes of the harshest Victorian. Poverty isn t about money; it s a state of mind. That state of mind is low conscientiousness...

NATO in Libya: Is Syria next?

Now that NATO is closing up shop in Libya, will it turn to Syria? Right now, the answer is no. But if the fragmented Syrian opposition -- bolstered by Turkey, a member of NATO, which is turning increasingly against Syrian President Assad - manages to set up a Benghazi-like enclave either inside Syria or across the border in Turkey, anything goes. To be sure, there are lots of differences between Libya and Syria. ... That hasn t stopped hawks from suggesting that it s time to intervene in Syria, too...

Dr. Wilmer J. That bad day started with a Politico article detailing two separate incidents of accused sexual harassment leveled at Cain in the 1990s. Before anyone had a chance to decide whether or not the charges had merit, Mr. Cain and his people took the report and transmogrified it into the one thing the Washington press corps loves above all else: a juicy cover-up story.'

Occupy Wall Street: Lagerkoller in Lower Manhattan

Plutocratic Government Tries To Beat Down #Occupy

Dave Johnson, Campaign for America's Future: 'In a country with a true democratic culture the local governments would be serving these people and honoring their right to dissent and protest. They would instinctively be showing up at protests like this and offering to help with any sanitation problems, etc, setting up public toilets, and other services. They would even be offering tents. If there are security problems in the occupy camps a city would be posting police in the encampment to help the people there, with a clear mission to serve them. They certainly would not be seeing them as the enemy, and attacking them.'

Unequal Justice: Banker Arrests, 0; Protester Arrests, 2,511

Bruce Judson, New Deal 2.0: 'The message to people and entities, large and small, is that they cannot rely on a blind justice system to protect them from unscrupulous transactions. The idea of fair dealing - which is at the heart of our economy - is breaking down. This implicit message also erodes the underpinnings of a vibrant capitalist economy. The rich and powerful can violate the law and will receive a slap on the wrist. As a result, the rights of the less powerful entities, which were violated by these elites, will not be protected by our justice system. The concept of fair dealing collapses.'

Syria is just an axis for American evil to spin

The US, judging from what has happened in Iraq and the kind of forces that are being encouraged in Libya, seems to be working on a carefully calculated plan to Balkanise the Middle East by splitting the countries into ethnic and religious mini-states.

Middle East Propaganda 101

By Glenn Greenwald

When it comes to American propaganda about the Middle East, this New York Times article - detailing U.S. plans to bolster its influence in the region after it 'withdraws' from Iraq - is a masterpiece.

Somalia, Libya, Uganda: US Military Increases Focus on 'Militant Threats' From Africa

By Associated Press

While putting few U.S. troops at risk, the United States is playing a growing role in Africa s military battles, using special forces advisers, drones and tens of millions of dollars in military aid to combat a growing and multifaceted security threat.

Neocolonial Scramble for Africa

Ugandans wonder: Is US after Kony, or oil?

Obama s announcement could not have come at a worse time in Uganda's political history. The country has been rocked by corruption scandals in the oil sector, with parliament calling for the country s ministers to resign while it investigated charges that they took bribes from a British oil company.

Top Ten Ways to Tell Kony is Phony

By Bruce A. Dixon

Kony 2012 is not a search for justice. Kony 2012 is a corporate-style PR and psy-ops campaign, a cynical hoax engineered to justify US and Western military intervention to control the incredibly lucrative oil, mineral, water and strategic resources of the heart of Africa.

US Africa Policy Assailed by Africans

Linn Washington Jr., This Can t Be Happening: 'This escalation of American military activity in Africa triggered an escalation of criticism, as many Africans and others see this activity as a projection of Western imperialism directed toward securing tighter dominance over Africa s vast mineral wealth, not as an effort to promote democracy, as proclaimed by the US and its allies.'
