A New Jury to Put the British Public Interest First

By Compass

Something is unraveling before our eyes. From bankers to media-barons, private interests have bankrupted and corrupted the public realm. Power, for so long hidden in the pockets of a cosy elite, has been exposed.

Unequal Protection: Corporate Control of Politics

Thom Hartmann, Berrett-Koehler Publishers: 'Fascism is rising in America, this time calling itself 'compassionate conservatism,' and 'the free market' in a 'flat' world. The point of its spear is 'corporate personhood' and 'corporate free-speech rights.' The behavior of the Roberts Court in Citizens United eerily parallels the day in 1936 when Roosevelt said: 'In vain they seek to hide behind the flag and the Constitution. In their blindness they forget what the flag and the Constitution stand for.' Even before the Citizens United case blew open the doors to a corporate takeover of American politics, the corrosive influence of corporations' having 'rights' was already evident. Now these 'unequal consequences' have been put on steroids.'

What is liberty?

Authority!
by Timothy J Taylor

08/25/11

The Declaration of Independence and Constitution of the United States of America promise individual freedom and liberty, but those who have sworn an oath to uphold these principles have systematically dismantled them to the point where there is almost nothing left. Where is the freedom? Where is the liberty?

Despite New Denials by Rumsfeld, Evidence Shows US Military Used Waterboarding-Style Torture

Jeffrey Kaye, Truthout: 'In the controversy over whether torture, especially waterboarding, was used to gather information leading to the capture of Osama bin Laden, former Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld told Fox News' Sean Hannity recently that 'no one was waterboarded at Guantanamo by the US military. In fact, no one was waterboarded at Guantanamo, period.' In his memoir, 'Known and Unknown,' Rumsfeld maintained, 'To my knowledge, no US military personnel involved in interrogations waterboarded any detainees, not at - or anywhere else in the world.' But as we shall see, Rumsfeld was either lying outright, or artfully twisting the truth.'

A ghastly spectacle

Independent Institute
by Anthony Gregory

07/31/11

It seems Congressional Republicans are hesitant to approve the small defense spending cuts proposed by Democrats. Anything that reduces funding for the U.S. empire, you see, is bound to make Republicans recoil much like vampires who have caught a glimpse of a crucifix dangling on a prospective victim?s neck. Surely, they would never approve cutting the military back to its funding levels from the end of the Bush administration - that would be most reckless. Yet when all the smoke clears, what are we looking at here?

Obama Capitulation to the Tea Party

Robert Borosage, Campaign for America s Future: 'The raw deal on the budget ceiling has been cut. The Tea Party terrorists - the extremist faction willing to hold the economy hostage to get their way - have won. The Republic, common sense and decency have been trampled. With the economy deeply depressed, 25 million people in need of full time work, the raw deal will impede any recovery. It precludes any serious action on jobs from the federal government. It will cost jobs as spending is cut. Instead of getting serious about a plan to revive this economy and put people back to work, Washington will remain fixated on what and how much to cut.'

Eliminate the debt ceiling

by Ayn R. Key

The Keynesians and Monetarists who control fiscal and monetary policy in the government will never accept that anything should actually be cut, other than a few token items of window-dressing. Their plan is to keep raising the debt limit every time it is reached. The entire show is Kabuki Theater because the Congress and the President know that the voters are actually watching this time and actually demanding that something be done about the excessive spending. But they do not believe in restraint. So perhaps the opposite approach should be taken on the debt ceiling issue.

Forget Compromise: The Debt Ceiling Is Unconstitutional

Ellen Brown, Truthout: 'The debt ceiling crisis can be averted by enforcing the 14th Amendment, which mandates the government to pay its debts already incurred, including pensions. That means Social Security, which IS an 'entitlement,' in the original sense of the word. We are entitled to it because we have paid for it with taxes. The game of Russian roulette being played with the US federal debt has been called a 'grotesque political carnival' and political blackmail. The uproar stems from a statute that is unique to the United States and never did make much sense. First passed in 1917 and revised multiple times since, it imposes a dollar limit on the federal debt.'

Brazil Deforestation Quagmire

Elizabeth Rust, Council on Hemispheric Affairs: 'A string of recent events indicates that Amazonian deforestation and violence against environmental activists are on the rise. The Brazilian Congress s lower house approves a bill that weakens protection of the rainforest - which may explain the drastic increase in deforestation, as land clearers anticipate amnesty for their crimes. Given Brazil s historical disregard for the Amazon rainforest s global importance, and the legislature's evident lack of commitment to resolving the issue, a strong and long-term executive response is urgently needed.'

Congressional Republicans Hack Away at Medicaid While the Rich Hollow It Out From the Inside

Russ Wellen, Truthout: 'Republican assaults on social service programs have finally yielded some significant advances, with the Obama administration offering to push the eligibility age for Medicare up from age 65 to 67. Also, as part of a bargain to raise the debt ceiling, the administration has offered to dial down cost-of-living increases in Social Security benefits. But it s Medicaid, which, as the health provider of last resort for the most vulnerable segment of society, has long been a tempting target for Republicans.'

Nebenkosten. Weiter lesen:

Time for Public Sector Unions to Fight Back

Shamus Cooke, Truthout: 'The media attack on public sector unions has reached a timely zenith, perfectly in sync with the politicians' anti-union deathblow. This coordinated campaign is happening nationwide, and includes Democratic and Republican marauders on a state-by-state basis. There are several state battlegrounds where this war is coming to completion, but no winner has been declared. If Democratic and Republican governors are able to force massive concessions on public sector unions - and the corresponding cuts to the services their members deliver to the public - the labor movement and the social safety net will both be decimated, paving the way for even more brutal, future attacks.'

How Shadowy Right-Wing Front Groups Engineered Our National Embrace of Debt Reduction Over Job Creation

Lee Fang, ThinkProgress: "Since the end of the Bush presidency, shadowy right-wing groups, many of them formed for this very purpose, have primed the public with a sophisticated public relations campaign to shift the national discourse to a focus on debt reduction. Many of these groups do not appear partisan, and have figured out ways around registering their activity with the Federal Elections Commission (so the true extent to their ad-buying is rarely recorded).'

Stop Calling This a 'Debt Crisis', It Isn t

Dave Johnson, Campaign for America s Future: 'You have probably been hearing about 'the debt crisis.' I can't open a newspaper or turn on the radio or TV without hearing about 'the debt crisis.' Well stop calling it that, because that isn t what is going on. There is no debt crisis; the only crisis going on is the threat of several members of the House to vote against raising the debt ceiling if they don t get their way, thereby sending our country into default. They are trying to get around the rules of democracy and force deep cuts in the things We, the People do for each other while keeping taxes really low for the wealthy.'

The Racial Wealth Gap s Larger Than Ever. Here is How It Will Destroy Us

Kai Wright, ColorLines.Com: 'The racial wealth gap has been enormous ever since the Census Bureau began measuring it 25 years ago. But it has never been larger than today. The median wealth of a white family is now at least 20 times higher than that of a black family and 18 times that of a Latino family, according to an analysis by the Pew Research Center. Pew looked at wealth numbers between 2005 and the technical end of the US recession in 2009. It found that the racial wealth gap exploded in that time period, as blacks and Latinos suffered dramatic blows from the collapsed housing market.'

When the super-rich cry 'class warfare!'

Salon
by Michael Winship

07/28/11

'There s class warfare, all right,' Warren Buffett told the New York Times two years before the 2008 crash, 'but it s my class, the rich class, that s making war, and we are winning.' I ll say. Which makes the whining of the moneyed - in addition to the winning - all the more annoying. Especially after the Obama White House has bent over backward for them - simply remember the concessions on healthcare and financial reform, for two - and all too often has vassaled itself to the knights of the Fortune 500, kowtowing all the way to the bank where they keep the big campaign contributions...

Die bestimmende Parole der Demo war: 'How do you spell murderer? S.F.P.D.!' (übersetzt: 'wie buchstabierst du Mord? - S.F.P.D." = San Francisco Police Department). Die Parole: 'No justice! No peace! Disband the BART police!' (übersetzt: Keine Gerechtigkeit! Kein Frieden!

Future of Freedom Foundation

The witching hour is nigh and the threat of the U.S. defaulting on the federal debt is being bandied about as if it were the boogeyman. Fear mongers from the left and right both say the country will go belly up unless the debt ceiling is raised by the Aug. 2 deadline, that it will no longer be able to pay on its $14.3 trillion debt or honor other financial obligations unless it goes further into debt by borrowing more money...

Is the president in recovery?

Orange County Register
by Victor Davis Hanson

07/28/11

President Obama does not care much about deficits - other than worrying that big debt might matter in his re-election campaign. In his first three budgets, Obama borrowed nearly $5 trillion. ... This spring he proposed the largest annual deficit in U.S. peacetime history, which is why his $3.7 trillion budget for 2012 was rejected in the Senate by a 97-0 vote. In other words, under Obama, the government during the last three years has borrowed on average about $4 billion each day...

Debt debate: A pox on both parties

Cato Institute
by Jeffrey A. Miron

07/28/11

As the August 2 deadline looms for Congress to extend the debt ceiling, Democrats and Republicans are both fiddling while Rome burns. Each party has valid concerns about the other s approach to avoiding default, yet each is relying on counterproductive articles of faith. To address the debt crisis, both sides must give up their cherished, but misguided, ideas...

It?s not 'default'
Slate
by Annie Lowrey

07/27/11

Yes, something awful and weird will happen in early August, but it isn t going to be default. The Treasury will need to issue more bonds to make promised payments to the country s creditors, senior citizens, federal employees, and so on. Without that extra cash, the federal government will need to miss 40 to 45 percent of its payments, according to calculations by the Bipartisan Policy Center. But that is not default. Default is too tidy a term for it. The chaos that might hit after Aug. 2 has no precedent, and therefore no name...
