Bosnia, Kosovo, and Now Libya: The Human Costs of Washington Ongoing Collusion With Terrorists

Peter Dale Scott, Japan Focus: 'Twice in the last two decades, significant cuts in U.S. and western military spending were foreseen: first after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and then in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. But both times military spending soon increased, and among the factors contributing to the increase were America s interventions in new areas: the Balkans in the 1990s, and Libya today. Hidden from public view in both cases was the extent to which al-Qaeda was a covert U.S. ally in both interventions, rather than its foe.'

South America Unites Against 'Irresponsible Debtors' in the North

Mario Osava, Inter Press Service: 'Default, insolvency, fiscal irresponsibility, debt crisis and similar terms form part of the vocabulary used to describe countries in the developing South in the 1980s and 1990s. A decade later, the world seems to have turned upside down. The 'irresponsible debtors' are now in the industrialised North, and the countries of South America, victims of the 'lost decade' of the 1980s and the subsequent financial crises, are now working hard to protect themselves against contagion from the crisis in the United States and Europe.'

Obama on the Backs of the Poor

Ray McGovern, Consortium News: 'A huge majority of economists concede that America has been sliding into a land of haves and have-nots for the past several decades and that the 'deal' Obama signed into law on Tuesday will do little, if anything, to improve the lives of our fellow citizens deprived of work, shelter, medical care and other necessities. In sum, Obama - again put in a corner by Republicans who appeared ready to force the United States into default if they didn t get their way - reneged on a promise not to let the burden for coping with the economic/fiscal mess fall primarily on the backs of the poor.'

The US Does not Have a Debt Problem, It Has a Crisis of Values

Imara Jones, Colorlines.com: 'Default was the best option. The shameful and dangerous debt ceiling deal passed into law yesterday made that clear. It is rooted in the grand bargain that the political class made in 2008: to save Wall Street and allow those in the rest of America to drown Katrina style. The plan will suck money out of a shattered economy that can ill afford it and demand sacrifice from frayed and threadbare communities that will likely not be able to endure what s been asked. Yet, it will allow the wealthiest Americans to get off Scott free and - here s the kicker - profit from the misery that the plan exacerbates.'

Bringing on the 'Obama Recession' by Forgetting the Lessons of Keynes and FDR

David Woolner, New Deal 2.0: 'In the past two years we have heard official after official claim that they do not want to repeat 'the mistakes of the Great Depression.' Yet the recent behavior of both the Obama Administration and senior members of Congress belies this claim. Rather than fight for economic policies that would stimulate the economy and put people back to work, this Administration - and even many senior democratic party officials - have chosen to ignore the lessons of the past. Instead of focusing on jobs and growth - the real crisis in our economy - they have embraced the sky-is-falling rhetoric of the Republican Party extremists.'

Why is America committing suicide?

Antiwar.com
by Justin Raimondo

08/05/11

When someone habitually engages in suicidal behavior, repeating the same pattern in spite of recognizing, on some level, that their actions are self-destructive, one has to wonder if they harbor a death wish. Which raises the question: So why is the American ruling class intent on committing suicide?

100 ways Obama is just like Bush

The Humble Libertarian
by staff

08/01/11

More of the same. A LOT more of the same. In fact, every negative aspect of the Bush Administration has come back with a vengeance in the presidency of Barack H. Obama. Everything the American people detested so strongly about Bush has not only characterized the presidency of his successor, it s gotten much worse. Don t believe me? The following is a list of 100 ways President Obama is just like President Bush...

America in Decline

Noam Chomsky, Truthout: 'Corporate power s ascendancy over politics and society - by now mostly financial - has reached the point that both political organizations, which at this stage barely resemble traditional parties, are far to the right of the population on the major issues under debate. For the public, the primary domestic concern is unemployment.'

The Republicans' Double-Dip Recession, and What Must Be Done

Robert Reich, Robert Reich s Blog: 'Republicans repeatedly assured the nation that once the debt-limit deal was done - capping spending, cutting the budget deficit, and getting '90 percent' of what they wanted - the economy would bounce back. Just the opposite seems to be happening. Call it the Republican s double-dip recession. Wall Street investors aren t ideologues. They don t obsess about budget deficits ten years from now, or the size of the government. One day doesn t make a trend, but a giant sell-off like this is motivated by hard, cold realities.'

Saved by a trillion-dollar coin?

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Robert P. Murphy

08/04/11

Now that the 'crisis' over the federal debt ceiling has been averted, we can leisurely explore two of the wackier proposals that emerged during the state of panic. Not surprisingly, the schemes involved the Federal Reserve and its ability to circumvent, not just standard accounting, but also the traditional divisions of political power. It s worth studying the episode carefully because we will probably see one or more of these 'solutions' promoted as the only answer to another crisis in the not-too-distant future...

US buys most expensive drones ever

With $14 trillion in the hole and a slew of wars seemingly no one wants America to be in, what better way for the United States to spend their money by putting $23 billion into spy planes? Each of the four dozen-plus spy crafts comes at a price tag of $218 million apiece - ten times the price of the largest armed attack drone.

Uncovering the Military Secret Military

Nick Turse, TomDispatch and AlterNet: 'Last year, Karen DeYoung and Greg Jaffe of the Washington Post reported that U.S. Special Operations forces were deployed in 75 countries, up from 60 at the end of the Bush presidency. By the end of this year, U.S. Special Operations Command spokesman Colonel Tim Nye told me, that number will likely reach 120. 'We do a lot of traveling - a lot more than Afghanistan or Iraq,' he said recently. This global presence - in about 60% of the world s nations and far larger than previously acknowledged - provides striking new evidence of a rising clandestine Pentagon power elite waging a secret war in all corners of the world.'

Welcome to what recovery?

The Koch Spider Web

Allison Kilkenny, Truthout: 'Rick Boucher, a then-28-year incumbent Democratic Congressman from the Ninth District - the longest-serving Congressman in that district since the Civil War - was surprisingly defeated by Republican Morgan Griffith. The upset came as a shock to many, since an early October poll showed Boucher ahead by double digits, including one measure earlier in the month that put him ahead by 10 percentage points. C'est la vie. Such is political life. The National Republican Congressional Committee spent around $600,000 in ads, and the media framed the defeat as a Blue Dog, Boucher losing due to his support for cap-and-trade policies. Except, there was more to the story.'

The Fight for a Progressive America Begins Today - and Does Not End in 2012

Amy Dean, Truthout: 'If only 500 people are showing up for a rally, it s because the public doesn t care. In this case, it doesn t care about politicians bickering over the debt ceiling. America has a different agenda and Washington is missing it entirely. As has been often noted, we are not facing a debt crisis in our country. We are facing a jobs crisis. Working people desperately need the economy to improve and to start generating well-paying jobs. Less often noted is the fact that taking on America s real problems will require the president to behave differently, and it will require us to behave differently.'

Nuclear War or Real Security?

Joseph Gerson, Truthout: 'In the months leading up to the debt deal struck on August 2, we grew accustomed to news of our government on the verge of bankruptcy, and news that failing to lift the debt ceiling would trigger a second recession - or worse - and that the best we could hope for was the nightmare of $2.7 trillion in cuts to Social Security benefits, Medicare and essential social services. Talk about national decline! When I return to Hiroshima to mark the August 6 anniversary of the atomic bombing that destroyed that city in nine seconds, people will ask, 'How can the US plan to spend still more to prepare for nuclear war?' Here's what I will have to tell them: We can invest to intimidate the world, but not to create jobs, keep people in their homes, or to build the 21st century infrastructure our children deserve.'

Arbeitszufriedenheit in Deutschland sinkt langfristig.

Science Distorted by the Bomb

Evaggelos Vallianatos, Truthout: 'The United States assumed the mantle of Western civilization immediately after blasting Japan with atomic weapons on August 6 and 9, 1945. Scientists created those weapons. By that act, scientists made science dangerous and changed themselves, America, and the world forever... Science is potentially lethal because, in many instances, it does not serve the well-being of citizens. Instead, it is a subsidiary to war; it fuels a medical system based on drugs rather than healing; it supports industrialized agriculture hooked on broad-spectrum toxins (biocides) that poison humans.'

Debt ceiling fraud

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

08/02/11

I told you so! For the past several months, I have been saying that the Republicans were going to cave on the lifting of the debt ceiling. I have been writing it and I have been proclaiming it on my weekly Internet show. And sure enough, that?s exactly what they did. After weeks of huffing and puffing about the enormous size of the national debt and the out-of-control federal spending, they caved, once again, and voted to lift the debt ceiling...

Debt deal: Politicians win, middle class loses

Cato Institute
by Daniel J. Mitchell

08/02/11

America is on a path to becoming a Greek-style welfare state. Thanks to the Bush-Obama spending binge, the burden of federal spending has climbed to about 25% of national economic output, up from only 18.2% of GDP when Bill Clinton left office. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Because of a combination of demographic forces and poorly designed entitlement programs, federal spending could consume as much as 50% of economic output by the time the baby boom generation is fully retired...

Wars to nowhere

The biggest lie in the politician s trick box is that these wars to nowhere are necessary for the nation s defense. They aren t. A Tale of Two Lootings

Richard D. Wolff, Truthout: 'The political posturing around the debt ceiling 'crisis' was mostly a distraction from the hard issues. The hardest of those - underlying US economic decline - keeps resurfacing to display costs, pains and injustices that threaten to dissolve society. Its causes - two long-term trends over the last 30 years - help also to explain the political failures that now compound the social costs of economic decline.'

Who Gains From Debt Deal? The Pentagon, for One

Nancy A. Youssef, McClatchy Newspapers: 'The last-minute deal that Congress is considering to raise the federal debt limit probably will mean trillions of dollars in government spending reductions for most agencies. But one department stands to gain: the Pentagon. Rather than cutting $400 billion in defense spending through 2023, as President Barack Obama had proposed in April, the current debt proposal trims $350 billion through 2024, effectively giving the Pentagon $50 billion more than it had been expecting over the next decade.'

Raising The Debt; Lowering The Boom

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

The big story this week is the decision of the US Congress and Senate to raise the debt ceiling. Did this really surprise anyone? Despite millions of pieces of communication from their constituents to the contrary, congressmen and senators voted by substantial margins to increase the debt ceiling by up to $2.4 trillion. The House vote was 269 to 161. The Senate vote was 74 to 26. Coincidentally, the amount of this increase to the debt ceiling is now the largest debt-limit increase in US history........
