The American Dream As We Know It Is Obsolete

Norman Solomon: 'You Cant Really Trust the Media'

By RT

While the American media discusses the dilemma in the Middle East to a degree, are we really getting the big picture back home? Normon Salomon of the Institute for Public Accuracy says that though the Internet and blogging has allowed a new outlook to be exposed, mainstream media still paints the picture of a paradisaical United States.

The American Dream As We Know It Is Obsolete

By Arun Gupta

However outdated the American Dream, organized labor and liberals desperately cling to it as they retreat in the face of the Republican and corporate blitzkrieg. In this war, the battlefield is social spending and the public sector, and for the losing side the situation is dire.

Libya and Humanitarian War

By Robert Dreyfuss

Two elder American statesman, at least one of which might better be put on trial for war crimes, have come up with an attempt to square the circle by reconciling 'realism' and 'idealism'-that is, neoconservative interventionism-in regard to 'humanitarian' wars.
They fail.

When intervention is easy

Cato Institute

04/08/11

Power gives American presidents more choices than other leaders. U.S. military capabilities and wealth make almost any global action possible. And the Cold War that checked much of our proclivity for intervention is over. To fight as we do in Afghanistan, even most wealthy nations would have to hike taxes or slash other expenditures, provoking domestic opposition. We do it with less than 1 percent of gross domestic product, mostly borrowed. Because we can intervene relatively cheaply, temptation always beckons...

Lindsey Grahams war on freedom

The American Conservative
by Jack Hunter

04/07/11

Certainly the Founding Fathers considered free speech more than just a mere 'great idea' but one of the bedrock principles of our republic, even enshrining it in the first amendment to our Constitution. That Graham would be willing to capitulate to radical Islamists by curtailing this precious freedom is particularly astounding when you consider that the Senator consistently and adamantly opposes curtailing the one policy that unquestionably 'inspires the enemy' more than any other. In fact, when it comes to looking out for America?s proper defense and actual security ? Lindsey Graham is arguably the most a...-backward politician alive today...

The Link Between War and Big Finance

Kevin Zeese, War Is A Crime.org: 'Americans are recognizing the link between the military-industrial complex and the Wall Street oligarchs - a connection that goes back to the beginning of the modern U.S. empire. Banks have always profited from war because the debt created by banks results in ongoing war profit for big finance; and because wars have been used to open countries to U.S. corporate and banking interests. Secretary of State, William Jennings Bryan wrote: 'the large banking interests were deeply interested in the world war because of the wide opportunities for large profits.'

And If We Were to Change: Everything

Philippe Fremeaux, Laurent Jeanneau, Thierry Pech, Guillaume Duval, Christian Chavagneux and Antoine de Ravignan, Translated by Leslie Thatcher, Alternatives Economiques: "In the face of environmental challenges, in the face of inequalities that threaten our societies' cohesion and global peace, it is no longer possible to distinguish what pertains to the short- or to the long-term in the reforms that must be executed... What could make utopia possible? Maybe the ever more vocal exasperation with gaps in wealth that have become unbearable and which maintain a model of consumption - lived by the well-off, dreamed of by the deprived - that condemns us all. Offshored Production, Dysfunctional Diplomacy and Outsourced Policy: A Three-Part Analysis on Americas Trade Decline

Ian Fletcher, Truthout: 'America's manufacturing sector, despite record output, is actually in very deep trouble: record output doesnt prove the sector healthy when we are running a huge trade deficit in manufactured goods - that is, consuming more goods than we produce and plugging the gap with asset sales and debt. But this analysis of the problem only touches the quantitative surface of our ongoing industrial decline. Real industries are not abstract aggregates; they are complex ecosystems of suppliers and supply chains, skills and customer relationships, long-term investments and returns."

Back to the Streets This Weekend for Peace and Justice

Maureen Baillargeon Aumand, War Is a Crime: 'The beloved peace and justice communities are rallying - again - this weekend! On April 9th in NYC and 10th in San Francisco, human rights, civil rights, and workers rights leaders and advocates - religious and secular - Jewish, Muslim, Christian, humanist - are linking arms in solidarity and common commitment with antiwar activists to take to the streets in the face of what Dr. King once called an 'unfolding conundrum.' A true tempest is rising from the triple threat which Dr. King outlined so eloquently decades past of materialism, racism and militarism. To be sure there is a tsunami fast approaching which is threatening by its erosion of foundational principles and their hard won incarnation over two centuries of struggle and evolution to tear the very moorings out from under all that has made the 'American experiment' such a bearer of hope and promise for the human planetary community as a whole.'

How Much Are You Paying in Taxes for War This Year?

Video

Robert Greenwald, Brave New Foundation: 'While millions of Americans are out of work or struggling to pay their bills, our government is spending billions of dollars a week on a war we dont support in Afghanistan. At no time is this more apparent than on Tax Day, which is coming up on April 18. Oliver Wendell Holmes once famously said, 'Taxes are what we pay for civilized society.' But unfortunately, they're also what we pay when our elected officials make huge, expensive mistakes, and in this case, use lots of expensive weapons to kill people.'

U.S. Troops In Afghanistan Suffer More Catastrophic Injuries

Reporting from Landstuhl, Germany, and Helmand - Grim combat statistics that one military doctor called 'unbelievable' show U.S. troops in Afghanistan suffered an unprecedented number of catastrophic injuries last year, including a tripling of amputations of more than one limb.

US soldiers are seven times as likely as UK troops to develop post-traumatic stress

Something is happening at the end of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that mental health experts are finding hard to explain: British and American soldiers appear to be having markedly different reactions to the stress of combat.

Losing a Partys Soul in Budget Fight

By Robert Kuttner

The 2012 budget proposal released Tuesday by Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan, chair of the House Budget Committee, would cut projected spending over the next decade by $5.8 trillion and further cut taxes. The plan would eliminate Medicare and Medicaid as we know them - and Social Security is next.

Bradley Manning: US government fails to follow its own rules

Over the past few weeks, the Bradley Manning defense has been working to facilitate an official visit for Congressman Dennis Kucinich, Mr. Juan Mendez (the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture), and a representative from Amnesty International. Despite multiple inquires from the defense and the interested parties, the Quantico Brig and the Government have denied the requests for an 'official visit.' The Quantico Brig Order P1640.1C, paragraph 3.17 allows two types of visitors for a detainee, 'authorized' and 'official.' The difference between them is described here in the Brig rule. The defense maintains that the critical distinction between the two is that official visits are privileged and not subject to Brig monitoring. Such an authorized visit, of course, will be subject to Brig monitoring and can be used as evidence against PFC Manning in a court-martial proceeding.

The Muslims are coming!

by Salim Muwakkil

04/07/11

In a strange kind of delayed response, the American public seems to be in a more Islamaphobic mood now than it was right after 9/11, when a few Muslim terrorists transformed planes into bombs. Symptoms are everywhere, from widespread opposition to the building of mosques and other Islamic institutions, to congressional hearings amplifying fearful, anti-Islamic voices, to Muslim-oriented surveillance policies, to the use of agent provocateurs to entrap hapless malcontents. The list goes on, but one of the most unlikely avenues of attack is jurisprudence...

The follies of legalism

Suppose that our act of war in Libya is perfectly legal. This is to overlook the absence of congressional authorization, a clear violation of the US Constitution, but let?s leave that aside for now. If our war in Libya is legal does that make this war prudent, effective, benevolent, worthwhile? Does the legality of this war imply a moral obligation to wage it? A little reflection shows that legality in itself is never enough to justify any action...

Once upon a time, people actually believed that a president could not constitutionally commit troops abroad without a declaration of war by Congress. With some exceptions, that belief held presidents in check for a while. But it passed away sometime after 1942, and since then presidents have gone to war - big-time and small - whenever they damn well pleased. Congress has simply been too timid to assert itself against imperial presidents...

The rich have been getting richer and the poor and the middle class have been getting poorer

Bill Quigley, Truthout: 'The rich have been getting richer and the poor and the middle class have been getting poorer in the US recently. Here are seven examples that show how the US is going through 'Robin Hood in Reverse.' Between 1948 and 1979, the richest 10 percent of families in the US claimed 33 percent of average income growth. Between 2000 and 2007, the richest 10 percent claimed a full 100 percent of average income growth in the US, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Business taxes were cut from 46 to 34 percent 25 years ago, according to ProPublica. But today, 115 of the big 500 companies listed on Standard and Poors stock index paid federal and other taxes of less than 20 percent over the last five years, according to David Leonhardt of The New York Times.'

Rush to Use Crops as Fuel Raises Food Prices and Hunger Fears

Elisabeth Rosenthal, The New York Times News Service: 'The starchy cassava root has long been an important ingredient in everything from tapioca pudding and ice cream to paper and animal feed. But last year, 98 percent of cassava chips exported from Thailand, the world's largest cassava exporter, went to just one place and almost all for one purpose: to China to make biofuel. Driven by new demand, Thai exports of cassava chips have increased nearly fourfold since 2008, and the price of cassava has roughly doubled.'

Koch Industries, Keystone XL Pipeline ... a BP on the Prairie?

Jeanine Molloff, Truthout: 'As the race to develop domestically produced fuels hits a fevered pitch, especially as a reaction to the tensions in the Middle East, politicians from the president on down are seeking a 'magic pill' that will solve our energy problems. President Obama promised a 'green revolution,' with hints at promising wind and solar energy sources during the campaign, but has now done one of his famous backtracks as he pushes the idea of 'clean coal.' One of the alleged 'clean coal' sources his administration has placed under serious consideration is 'bituminous coal' (aka 'unconventional petroleum deposit'), or simply put ... 'tar sands.' Tar sands are plentiful in the US and Canada, but environmentally treacherous to mine and transport - yet, this is the 'green energy' the Obama administration has leaned toward - with heavy prodding from its most threatening political enemy, Koch Industries - disputed founders of the Tea Party movement.'

Energy kills plants, plankton, and people. It imperils the environment, poisons the oceans, and is threatening to turn part of Japan, one of the most advanced nations on the planet, into a contaminated zone for decades to come.'

Kritik an den Kosten des Libyen-Einsatzes

http://www.heise.de/tp/blogs/8/149618

--------

8. April 2011

War: The Republicans real priority

Future of Freedom Foundation

In their 'Pledge to America,' House Republicans promised 'to stop out-of control spending and reduce the size of government.' But other than promising to repeal Obamacare, no specific mention is made in the Pledge about eliminating any federal department, agency, or commission. Indeed, the Republicans? stated ambition was merely to 'roll back government spending to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout levels'...

The hypocrisy at the heart of the police state

The police state, existing as it does in a country in which the officially encouraged self-perception is still heavily influenced by the mythos of the common law and the 'freeborn American,' must engage in ideological legerdemain for its own survival. Thats not to say the propaganda has to be sophisticated enough to pass serious scrutiny or convince a skeptic. It just has to be good enough to fool most of the people most of the time...

Scott Walkers Attorney Says Justice David Prosser Is Vital to Anti-Worker Agenda

'The Peasants Need Pitchforks'

Robert Scheer, Truthdig: 'The delusion of a classless America in which opportunity is equally distributed is the most effective deception perpetrated by the moneyed elite that controls all the key levers of power in what passes for our democracy. It is a myth blown away by Nobel Prize winner Joseph E. Stiglitz in the current issue of Vanity Fair. In an article titled 'Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1%' Stiglitz states that the top thin layer of the superwealthy controls 40 percent of all wealth in what is now the most sharply class-divided of all developed nations: 'Americans have been watching protests against repressive regimes that concentrate massive wealth in the hands of an elite few. Yet, in our own democracy, 1 percent of the people take nearly a quarter of the nations income - an inequality even the wealthy will come to regret.'
