As Long As The Public is Under Control, Everything is Fine

By Kristian Smith

"The guiding principle (for American government) is that as long as the public is under control, everything is fine," he said. "(The traditional argument is) the powerful should gain ends by any possible means. As long as the public is kept under control, public will doesn't matter."

AG says state has until May to release Palin emails

MSNBC

01/27/11

The state of Alaska has until May 31 to release about 25,000 pages of e-mails from former Gov. Sarah Palin and senior members of her administration, the state attorney general declared Wednesday. As we reported last month, by May the delays in dealing with public records from the Palin administration will have stretched out longer than the Palin administration itself. She was governor for 966 days. By May 31, the request from msnbc.com for the official records will be 986 days old. State regulations usually require records to be made available within 10 days, but state officials said they were overwhelmed by the volume of the e-mails...

Bills Denying Birthright Citizenship to be Introduced in Arizona

Fox News

01/26/11

Arizona is expected to set off another seismic immigration wave on Thursday, when both chambers of its legislature expect to hear the introduction of bills denying citizenship to U.S.-born babies of undocumented immigrants. Republican State Sen. Ron Gould said he and Republican State Rep. John Kavanagh agreed on a day for each to introduce the legislation, but Gould said that timetables for consideration of the bills by the separate chambers will diverge at that point.

Obama Inc.: The state of the union is still a state of war

Jim Hightower: "Exciting news, folks. Obama and team say they're recalibrating, recasting, retooling and rebranding his presidency! And they've come up with a dandy new slogan to sum it all up and get America moving again. Ready? 'Win the future.' Takes your breath away, doesn't it? If you're old enough to remember Gerald Ford's hapless presidency, Obama's fabulous new slogan might have a familiar ring to it."

Freedom is not compatible with government?s initiation of force against innocent people

Liberty & Power
by Robert Higgs

01/26/11

[A] presumption in favor of freedom rules out virtually everything that modern governments do, certainly nearly everything they do in interfering in economic affairs. Redistribution of income, for example, requires that the government rob Peter in order to benefit Paul (and its own functionaries, who serve as middlemen in this transfer). This action is not freedom; it is a crime against Peter, a raw violation of his right to his own legitimate property...

Obamas collapse: The return of the military commissions

Future of Freedom Founation
by Andy Worthington

01/25/11

For T.S. Eliot, April was the cruelest month, but for the prisoners at Guantanamo it is January ? from the dashed hopes of January 2009, when President Obama swept into office issuing an executive order in which he promised to close the prison within a year, to January 2010, when, having failed to do so, he added insult to injury by issuing a moratorium preventing the release of 29 Yemenis cleared for release by his own Guantanamo Review Task Force .... This year the president?s bitter surprise for the prisoners was two-fold...

01/26/11

New budget estimates Wednesday paint a grim picture of the nation?s [sic] fiscal state, with the government on pace to rack up combined deficits of $2.58 trillion for 2011 and 2012 even with an improved economy. With the Treasury already warning it will have exhausted the government?s borrowing authority this spring, the Congressional Budget Office report is the most up-to-date analysis of just how big an increase in the debt ceiling will be needed [sic] prior to the 2012 elections...

It is not often that one sees an entire nation marching in lockstep to go over a cliff into an abyss, but that is essentially what the United States is doing at the moment. President Obama?s policies are remarkably similar to President Bush?s. Most of their differences are in matters of degree, not principle. When numbers get unserious

Reason Reason
by Jacob Sullum

01/26/11

Obama depicts budget cutters as panicky passengers 'trying to reduce the weight of an overloaded aircraft by removing its engine,' a metaphor that transforms frugality into a vice and makes continuing to spend money we don't have seem like the only responsible course. This inversion of values is facilitated by the self-fulfilling conventional wisdom that serious spending cuts are unserious because no one will take them seriously. According to this view, epitomized by the Times, only rubes imagine that the budget can be balanced by reducing expenditures, while fiscal sophisticates understand the need to carry on as usual, despite a $1.4 trillion deficit and a $14 trillion debt...

And the debt bomb ticks on

Human Events
by Patrick J. Buchanan

01/25/11

The federal deficit for the fiscal year 2011, which ends Sept. 30, is projected at between $1,200 billion and $1,500 billion. Thus, the $100 billion in cuts the firebrands are pushing, and few think they will get, add up at best to 8 percent of the deficit and 2.5 percent of the $3.87 trillion budget Obama proposed. Thus, at best, this Congress will only slightly reduce the rate of speed at which we are heading toward a debt default...

Winning the Future for Whom?

Maya Schenwar, Truthout: "In the context of the State of the Union, and of Washingtonspeak on the whole, what does 'democracy' mean? This brand of 'democracy' certainly does not include the voices of the poor - the people who are disenfranchised due to their lack of access to basic necessities, the people who, more than anyone, need their government to care. This spectacle of contention and frustration and mess is ultimately a battle between a narrow sliver of very similar perspectives.... Does 'working together,' then, connote simply uniting the voices and interests of 'moderate' Republicans and 'centrist' Democrats, in Congress and in corporate America? A real democracy represents Gary, Indiana as boldly as it represents Washington, DC."

The revolving-door polity of corporatism

By now ... Barack Obama?s fondness for turning high-powered corporate executives into federal government footmen is no secret. From Tim Geithner, to William Daley, to Roger Altman, the President has been very cozy with big business indeed, and not just big business, but the biggest. It is, to be sure, a very confused, twisted political lexicon that would adjudge the President as hostile to business, but that judgment is no more absurd than the myth that to be pro-business is to be pro-free market...

US cant link accused Army private to Assange

Bradley Manning MSNBC

01/24/11

U.S. military officials tell NBC News that investigators have been unable to make any direct connection between a jailed army private suspected with leaking secret documents and Julian Assange, founder of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks. The officials say that while investigators have determined that Manning had allegedly unlawfully downloaded tens of thousands of documents onto his own computer and passed them to an unauthorized person, there is apparently no evidence he passed the files directly to Assange, or had any direct contact with the controversial WikiLeaks figure...

Bush White House improperly held political briefings

USA Today

A federal agency is reporting that officials in President George W. Bush's White House improperly conducted political briefings on government property, and encouraged employees to get involved in campaigns, meaning that taxpayers footed the bill for political activity. 'As the 2006 election drew nearer, OPA (the White House Office of Political Affairs) became a partisan political organization,' reported the Office of Special Counsel, an advisory agency that reviews applications of the federal Hatch Act...

America's Culture of Cruelty

Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: "The recent murderous acts of violence committed by Jared Lee Loughner in Arizona cannot be reduced to the mental instability of a young man out of touch with reality. Nor can such a horrendous act be reduced to a breakdown in civil discourse. Such rationales are too easy, and emulate what Frank Rich has called 'classic American denial.' There is a deeper order of politics behind this murderous act, one that the American public is inclined to ignore. More specifically, the general responses to this violent act are symptomatic of a society that separates private injuries from public considerations, refusing to connect individual acts to broader social considerations."
