'Greatest Nation' Rhetoric Roars Back

Robert Jensen, Truthout: "[The] expression of American exceptionalism is unexceptional in US political history, but it roared back stronger than ever in 2010, especially in the rhetoric of the Tea Party movement. As it becomes harder to ignore the United States' decline as an economic power - which will limit the capacity for imperial marauding around the world - the inclination of most mainstream politicians to assert our greatness will intensify. Those of us with radical or progressive politics need to challenge these kinds of slogans when we talk with friends, family and co-workers.... It is neither churlish nor malevolent to want to honestly assess the accomplishments and failures of one's country. Rather, it is the obligation of every citizen."

Corporate and Congressional Disasters

Robert Weissman, Truthout: "Corporate crime and wrongdoing is an everyday fact of life in the United States and around the world. Still, the last year has been remarkable for a series of high-profile, deadly corporate disasters: the BP Deepwater Horizon catastrophe that killed 11 workers and spewed millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, the deadly explosion at Massey's Upper Big Branch mine and unintended acceleration of Toyota cars. You might think that these disasters, singly and together, would impel desperately needed legislative reform. You might think that, but if you did, you would be wrong. Despite blanket TV and newspaper coverage of the corporate wrongdoing in each case, despite deep public outrage and fear, despite public clamor for action to prevent the same things from happening, Congress has done - exactly nothing. And the situation is about to get worse."

Mercury Fillings A Health Threat?

BOSTON -- Ben Zander, the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, saw his career hit a dark note seven years ago."They told me it was Meniere's disease and there was nothing they could do about it," said Zander. Zander was suffering from an inner ear disease. It caused dizziness and vomiting. During concerts he would have to pass the baton to an assistant and leave the stage."It was devastating when my hearing went . It was ghastly. It could have been career-ending," explained Zander. He went from doctor to doctor, and no one could help. Then he was referred biological dentist Dr. G. Robert Evans of the Groton Wellness Dental Spa and Medical Center. Evans traced his symptoms to the amalgam fillings in his mouth. Fillings that were partly mercury. Evans removed 15 fillings immediately."Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive substance known to man. It is 1,000 times more toxic than lead, said Evans. After the removal of Zander's fillings, he has had, a miraculous recovery from his disease. All of the symptoms disappeared.....

Appell an Abgeordnete: Sagen Sie Nein!

On Anniversary of Citizens United Ruling, Calls for DOJ to Investigate Scalia and Thomas

Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, Democracy Now!: "Today marks the one-year anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, that opened the floodgates for unlimited corporate spending on election campaigns. We speak with Bob Edgar, the president of Common Cause, which has filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Justice urging it to investigate whether Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas should have recused themselves from the case last year because of a conflict of interest."

Corporations, Unions and the Value of Opposition

Ellen Dannin, Truthout: "Why have unions? Because the persistent problem of unlimited corporate power requires an effective counterbalance. The need for such a counterbalance is clear. We saw the effect of increasing corporate power in the 2010 elections. We see it in virtually every law considered by Congress and state legislatures. And we saw it in the period leading up to the 1929 stock market crash and the Great Depression. As corporations grow mightier, they are able to amass even greater power. Then, just as now, Supreme Court decisions made corporations unaccountable to their societies by removing limits on corrupting and destructive power wielded by corporations."

Court and Chevron's "Crude" Attacks Continue

Michael Winship, Truthout: "Joe Berlinger's back is against the wall. Last week the independent filmmaker, already facing crushing debt from legal bills, was dealt a major blow in his continuing fight against the third-largest company in America: Chevron. It's a battle that epitomizes the hardship individuals face trying to challenge corporate giants that punch back with a knockout force of high-powered lawyers and unlimited cash. What's more, Berlinger's struggle continues to raise serious First Amendment issues and - as we approach the first anniversary of the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision - throws yet another spotlight on the increasingly pro-business stance of the nation's legal system."

One is the successful creation of 'punitive justice and a theatre of cruelty' as the political formula accepted (or at least acceptable) by the majority of Americans. The other is the accelerated pace of 'social amnesia': The most outrageous misdemeanor of the rulers, not so long ago a cause of public outcry, is pushed aside or forgotten altogether in time for the midterm elections. But there is another possibility as well, one that is perhaps too gruesome for the future of democracy to be seriously broached. It is the possibility - nay, the likelihood - that the link between public agenda and private worries, the very hub of the democratic process, has been broken, with each of the two spheres rotating by now in mutually isolated spaces, set in motion by mutually unconnected and un-communicating (though certainly not independent!) factors and mechanisms."

Federal Prisoners "With Unpopular Political Beliefs" Isolated, Abused

William Fisher, Truthout: "If you are unlucky enough to be doing time at one of the federal government's two 'experimental prisons' - which it calls Communications Management Units (CMUs) - you are categorically banned from any physical contact with visiting friends and family, including babies, infants and minor children. Severe restrictions are also placed on your access to phone calls and letters, as well as work and educational opportunities..... Two federal prisons are being used as CMUs and overwhelmingly hold Muslim prisoners and prisoners with unpopular political beliefs. Opponents charge they are practicing religious profiling, retaliation and arbitrary punishment."

Against state idolatry and the mystical view of the state

Downsize DC Downsize DC
by Perry Willis

01/20/11

The State is not a mystical entity possessed of magical powers. At best, it's merely a service provider, like Walmart, Exxon, and Microsoft, and it should be evaluated in the same way. But that's not how most of us think about The State. Instead, we think of it as being some mystical entity with magical powers...

Keeping the liberties of the people safe

The recent explosion in the reach of federal government, with far more proposed, has made the question of limits on federal power once again the central political issue. But despite the fact that our founders, who led our move to independence and shaped our Constitution, left us an extensive and invaluable record of their views on that precise issue, modern ignorance of our history severely impoverishes current discussions...

Former President George H.W. Bush said disagreements on policies 'go with the territory' as president. Brent Scowcroft, who served as national security adviser under the elder Bush, maintained in the run-up to the invasion that it wasn't clear that Hussein was part of the global terrorism network...

Evidence of an American Plutocracy: The Larry Summers Story

Matthew Skomarovsky, LittleSis: "Larry Summers' path to the Obama administration, and his record within it, are symptomatic of a new American plutocracy, and his new job at Harvard will keep the gears of corruption greased. Summers rose to power under the protective wing of Wall Street and Democratic Party mogul Robert Rubin. He aggressively advanced Rubin's program of financial deregulation and faithfully rescued his cronies when deregulation went wrong. Despite the economic catastrophes these policies have contributed to, Summers and other Rubinites have continued their political ascendancy in recent years, filling top positions in the Obama administration."

Rewriting the 'Tragedy of the Commons'

Bill McKibben, YES! Magazine: "It was two years before the first Earth Day in 1970 when Garrett Hardin penned the famous essay 'Tragedy of the Commons,' and it fit a certain bleak and despairing mood of the time. Paul Ehrlich had just published The Population Bomb, a Malthusian account of a world overwhelmed by sheer numbers of people. Against the backdrop of that gloom, Hardin's theory came as another dose of bad news, 'proving' that we also had no hope of controlling our appetite for natural resources. Since no one owned the oceans or the atmosphere, we would inevitably fish and pollute them into oblivion. Hardin offered a few suggestions, but his title summed it up: we were witnessing a tragedy whose script could not be revised."

Upon arrival, these rewarded farmers took their collective Easter baskets of more than 400 tons of vegetable seeds and burned them all. 'Long live the native maize seed!' they chanted in unison. Why should God bless America?

7.3 million Afghans are 'food insecure'

About 31 percent of the Afghan population was identified as "food-insecure" by a 2007 report on national risks.

--------

How the Power of Myth Keeps Us Mired in War

Ira Chernus, TomDispatch: "When I try to figure out why we are still in Afghanistan, though every ounce of logic says we ought to get out, an unexpected conversation I had last year haunts me. Doing neighborhood political canvassing, I knocked on the door of a cheerful man who was just about to tune in to his favorite radio show: Rush Limbaugh. He was kind enough to let me stay and we talked. Conservatives are often the nicest people - that's what I told him - the ones you'd like to have as neighbors. Then I said: I bet you're always willing to help your neighbors when they need it. Absolutely, he replied. So why, I asked, don't you to want to help out people across town who have the same needs, even if they're strangers?"

CounterPunch
by Joe Mowrey

01/19/11

It is tragic that six people lost their lives and many more were wounded by a fanatic in Arizona. Indiscriminate killing is a terrible thing. There is no way we can truly comprehend the motives behind this act, nor appreciate the full extent of the pain and heartache suffered by those affected. But behind the pathos surrounding this crime is an ugly truth. Though we profess indignant sorrow for those who died at the hands of a madman in Arizona, we willfully ignore the deaths of innocents which occur every day as a result of our own government's foreign policies...

Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) was the preeminent political philosopher of his time, whose immeasurable influence still resonates today, perhaps even more so than ever. His book, The Prince, has remained as a very widely read book throughout the globe for the past century, and before. In fact, it was the advent of the printing press, which came to existence just before his time, which helped disseminate his political philosophy across Continental Europe into the hands of Kings, Queens and major philosophical figures...

Strike The Root Strike the Root

The Tucson massacre is now serving as the pretext for new Federal speech laws. Now I don?t want to come off like some kind of paranoid, anti-government nutjob, but there is much potential for governmental abuse in such legal language as 'to incite violence.' But that?s one of the many nifty perks of being a ruler. You?re in the unique position of simply asserting causal links between acts of violence and expressions of speech while never having to worry about being held accountable for the acts of violence carried out at your command on nearly a daily basis...

Obamas regulation

John Stossel's Take
by John Stossel

Managing regulatory bureaucracy is like pushing string. Regulators want to regulate. Just last year, federal bureaucrats alone added 80,000 pages of brand new rules. Wikileaks Cables Show Obama Sent More Troops To Afghanistan Despite Warnings

Mike Ludwig, Truthout: "Secret diplomatic cables recently released by WikiLeaks show that the Obama administration increased the United States' military presence in Afghanistan despite warnings that the surge could make 2010 the most difficult and bloody since the 2001 invasion. US Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry issued several cables in 2009 detailing serious concerns about the Afghan government and its leader, President Hamid Karzai. Eikenberry claimed that Karzai 'is not an adequate strategic partner' and 'continues to shun responsibility for any burden, whether defense, governance or development.'"
