Am 28. Januar soll der Bundestag in dritter Lesung über den Antrag der Bundesregierung befinden, den Einsatz der Bundeswehr in Afghanistan um ein weiteres Jahr zu verlängern. Die Obergrenze der einzusetzenden Soldatinnen und Soldaten beträgt demnach unverändert 5.350. Schon das ist bemerkenswert, da die letztjährige Aufstockung des Personalumfangs um 500 Soldaten damals mit der zusätzlichen Absicherung der 2010 stattfindenden Parlamentswahl begründet worden war. 2011 finden in Afghanistan keine Wahlen statt; die zusätzlichen Kräfte sollen aber bleiben.
