Truthout investigative reporter Jason Leopold had never spoken to a former Guantanamo detainee before he phoned David Hicks shortly before the New Year. As Hicks recounted for Leopold - in his first public comments since the Australian was released from the "least worst place" in 2007 - the brutal torture he endured during his five-and-half-year imprisonment, the reporter was so moved that it nearly affected his ability to write this story. Leopold said when he finally decided to sit down at his computer to type, he discovered that torture not only leaves a permanent scar on the torture victim, but everyone who comes in contact with that person.
