Across-the-board cuts needed to avoid fiscal Armageddon

Antiwar.com Antiwar.com
by Ivan Eland

02/16/11

"[D]idn?t Secretary of Defense Bob Gates just announce that he was cutting $78 billion over five years from the Department of Defense?s (DoD) budget? Yes, but only in Orwellian Washington, D.C., is a budget cut actually a budget increase. In reality, to forestall deeper reduction, the cagey Gates offered only to cut planned increases in DoD?s future budgets (excluding funds for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars). Thus, the non-war defense budget will still be increasing from year to year, but at a lower rate than the fictional plan...

Obama?s sea of red

Cato Institute Cato Institute
by Michael D. Tanner

In the days and weeks leading up to the release of his budget, President Obama and his spokesmen warned us that it would contain 'tough choices' and 'painful cuts.' Having increased government spending by 21.4 percent during his first two years in office, Obama would now be intent on imposing 'fiscal discipline.' Hah! By the administration's own estimates, Obama's $3.7 trillion budget would raise this year's budget deficit to $1.65 trillion, the largest pool of red ink since the end of World War II...

War is not the answer

Liberty For All
by R. Lee Wrights

02/16/11

War is never good, no matter how moral, lofty or beneficial the justification sounds; and, no matter what the objectives. Even a necessary war of defense has negative consequences that are devastating. War is the ultimate in destruction. War destroys peace, it destroys prosperity, it destroys property and most cruelly -- war destroys people...

Conspiracy Tactics From the Chamber

The latest chapter involves Anonymous, the group of hackers who targeted banks that denied WikiLeaks funding, a private security firm called HBGary, Bank of America, the CIA and our good friends at the US Chamber of Commerce. Spying, data mining and smear campaigns against progressive bloggers and union members and activists are just part of the mess, which is still unfolding. Data Mining You: How the Intelligence Community Is Creating a New American World

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch: ''In the new world of the National Security Complex, no one can be trusted - except the officials working within it, who in their eternal bureaucratic vigilance clearly consider themselves above any law. The system that they are constructing (or that, perhaps, is constructing them) has no more to do with democracy or an American republic or the Constitution than it does with a Soviet-style state. Think of it as a phenomenon for which we have no name. Like the yottabyte, it s something new under the sun, still awaiting its own strange and ugly moniker.''

The World According to Monsanto

Leslie Thatcher, Truthout: "When I reviewed 'The World According to Monsanto' over two years ago, I was hopeful a new administration would craft a new approach to genetically engineered food and the regulation of industry overall, but as we have documented at Truthout, the US government continues to act like a fully owned subsidiary of Monsanto, threatening retaliation against an ally that moved to ban GMO corn in accordance with the desires of a vast majority of its population, approving the deregulation of GMO alfalfa virtually ensuring the end of organic beef as an available option for Americans, and, most recently approving sugar beet planting this spring 'despite an earlier court ruling that government approval for planting the beets violated environmental law.' Monsanto's war against independent science also continues. 'The World According to Monsanto' remains an essential read for all citizens, especially any who eat."

Push to Cut Deficit by Trimming Empire

Robert Naiman, Truthout: "President Obama and House Republicans are out with their budget plans for the next fiscal year. Economist Jeffrey Sachs described it thus: President Obama wants to bleed the patient. House Republicans want to cut the patient's arm off. As Sachs pointed out, it's only possible in our 'Mubarak Egypt' political terrain - both party leaderships catering to the super rich, largely ignoring the interests of the vast majority of Americans who must work or scrounge to earn their daily bread - that we can have a debate premised on the absurd notion that the budget deficit is an urgent crisis while we have ten percent measured unemployment and many Americans - disproportionately veterans - don't have a decent place to sleep. But if that weren't outrageous enough, amid all the blather about 'shared sacrifice,' there is another group of powerful people that are largely escaping budget pain, in the plans of leaders of both parties, besides the super rich: the partisans of the Empire."

My Tortured Journey With Former Guantanamo Detainee David Hicks

Truthout investigative reporter Jason Leopold had never spoken to a former Guantanamo detainee before he phoned David Hicks shortly before the New Year. As Hicks recounted for Leopold - in his first public comments since the Australian was released from the "least worst place" in 2007 - the brutal torture he endured during his five-and-half-year imprisonment, the reporter was so moved that it nearly affected his ability to write this story. Leopold said when he finally decided to sit down at his computer to type, he discovered that torture not only leaves a permanent scar on the torture victim, but everyone who comes in contact with that person.
