'When the World Is Turned Upside Down and Protest Is Privatized'

Joseph Natoli, Truthout: 'We live now in a country which is perceived, according to a decreasing (increasing?) number, as having turned upside down. A plutocracy has emerged from previous aspirations toward egalitarian democracy; a 'trickle down' economics in which tax burdens are transferred from rich to poor persists even though it has only continued to redistribute the wealth to the wealthy; a tax rebate to the wealthy, which increases the national debt, is insisted upon by those who seeks massive cuts in government spending in order to decrease the national debt; a monumental collapse of the economy resulting from the reckless finagling of financial institutions results in an 'austerity' campaign against the working class and the middle class; the largest wealth gap among all industrialized nations is defined as a war between taxpayers and public employees; a privatized energy industry has silenced a major threat to its profits - global warming; programs which have greatly benefited the majority of Americans - Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid - face a continuous attack by the wealthy and a capitulating response by its defenders ...'

Europes Austerity: Like Something Out of the Brothers Grimm

Conn Hallinan, Foreign Policy in Focus: 'In ways big and small, Europeans from Greece to Portugal, from Britain to Bavaria are registering their growing anger with the relentless assault inflicted by government-imposed austerity programs. Wages, working conditions and pensions that unions successfully fought for over the past half century are threatened by the collapse of banking systems caught up in a decade-long orgy of speculation that the average European neither took part in, nor profited from. Even the so-called 'well off' workers of Bavaria, Germany's industrial juggernaut, saw their wages, adjusted for inflation, fall 4.5 percent over the past 10 years.'

In Proposed Mortgage Fraud Settlement, a Gift to Big Banks

Jesse Eisinger, ProPublica: 'Lurking in a proposed mortgage fraud settlement with the state attorneys general is a clause that could be worth billions for the big banks. Yes, I mean the settlement that might extract the supposedly large sum of $20 billion from the banks to settle foreclosure fraud. The one denounced as a 'shakedown' by Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama. Despite such rhetoric, the settlement might let the banks avoid tens of billions of write-downs, thanks to a clause with a biblical flavor: the last shall be first.'

Totalitarian Democracy

Richard Lichtman, Truthout: 'Those of us who have wondered how fascism would come, if and when it came, did not sufficiently credit the possibility that it would arrive through the process of law and 'freely chosen' representatives of the people. We were too much given to dramatic, filmic versions of the occasion, influenced perhaps by images of 'body snatchers' from another galaxy, or aliens as they were depicted in 'Independence Day.' There is often the exogamous tendency to imagine that catastrophe must come from beyond our shores, whether defined geographically, culturally or psychologically. It is always 'them,' not 'us,' that is the source of our disaster. Even when the foreign intrusion took a mortal form, we were more likely to view our antagonists in ways that denied their actual humanity.'

Ohio Governor Gets 3,000 Boos

Howard Ryan, LaborNotes: 'Ohio Governor John Kasich delivered his 'State of the State' speech March 8 with all the pomp expected of a new governor setting his agenda. But 3,000 union members and allies - led by 2,000 firefighters along with teachers, state workers, electrical workers, steelworkers, and many others - had just finished rallying outside the Columbus statehouse damning Senate Bill 5, the governor's proposal to gut public employee unions.'

Female soldiers? suicide rate triples when at war

USA Today

03/17/11

The suicide rate for female soldiers triples when they go to war, according to the first round of preliminary data from an Army study. The findings, released to USA TODAY this week, show that the suicide rate rises from five per 100,000 to 15 per 100,000 among female soldiers at war. Scientists are not sure why but say they will look into whether women feel isolated in a male-dominated war zone or suffer greater anxieties about leaving behind children and other loved ones.

Mannings Appeal of Refusal to Relax Conditions Outlines More Details of Mistreatment

Kevin Zeese, Truthout: 'Bradley Mannings appeal of the refusal to relax his conditions of confinement makes a strong case that he has been a model prisoner who is being unjustly abused. His inhumane treatment violates his due process rights and is cruel and unusual punishment. After providing detailed descriptions of his excellent behavior and the positive reports he has received while detained at Quantico since July 29, 2010, Manning contradicts the militarys claim that he is being treated just like any other prisoner.'

Is Obama worse than Bush?

The Libertarian Standard
by Anthony Gregory

03/16/11

The two are definitely in the same league, in absolute terms. Maybe Obama is Nixon to Bushs LBJ, in that he is continuing and expanding upon his predecessors foreign and domestic enormities, deserving special ire for ramping them up, but with the president before still deserving special hatred for having started so many horrible policies. Of course, it is unfair to compare Obama to Bush just yet, since Bush had eight years of destruction and Obama has only had a little over two...

Nullifying tyranny

Campaign For Liberty Campaign For Liberty
by George C. Leef

03/17/11

One of the big mistakes made by the drafters of the Constitution was their omission of any provision that says what is to be done if the Congress or president acts unconstitutionally. Although the Constitution places limits on their authority, nowhere does it specify the course or courses of action open to citizens or states who want to block the offending action. That omission has plagued the nation almost since its beginning...

The UN Security Council Has Not Authorized Regime Change in Libya

Robert Naiman, Truthout: 'Its a great thing that the Obama administration has resisted calls for unilateral US military action in Libya, and instead is working through the United Nations Security Council, as it is required to do by the United Nations Charter. Now, the administration needs to follow through on this commitment to international law by ensuring that foreign military intervention remains within the four corners of what the UN Security Council has approved. If it does not, and instead Western powers take the view that we now have a blank check to do whatever we want, the certain consequence will be that it will be much more difficult to achieve Security Council action in a similar situation in the future, and those who complain that the Security Council is too cautious will have only themselves to blame.'

So wird in dem Beitrag 'Libya and the World Left' von Immanuel Wallerstein vom 17.

Rising generation rejects 'Globocop' role

Cato Institute Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

03/15/11

Should we get involved in another civil war in the Middle East? Sure! What could possibly go wrong? That seems to be the way the Libya debates trending here in D.C. Ever generous with other Americans' blood and treasure, Beltway pols and pundits are lining up behind a 'no-fly zone' (for starters) and busily decrying President Obama's 'weakness.' Rarely is the question asked, is our political class learning? (Probably because the answer's always 'no.') And yet, 'the children' may have learned something from coming of age during two seemingly interminable and fruitless wars...

We hope the insurgents are committed to freedom, and if so, we hope they will prevail. But they must to do it without our help. This is THEIR struggle, not ours...

A farewell address

Antiwar.com
by Philip Giraldi

03/17/11

On the anniversary of his birthday, it once was the custom to read in the United States House of Representatives all of George Washingtons Farewell Address. The tradition lost its immediacy with the passage of time and ceased during the 1970s, when Washingtons endorsement of a free republic that assiduously avoided the quarrels of others became increasingly irrelevant to an America mired in Vietnam that was moving in the opposite direction at breakneck speed. I had hoped that the custom might be revived this year by some of the tea partiers, but, alas, could not find a congressman willing to take the lead to honor our first president...
