Where are the UN resolutions to protect civilians in Bahrain?

If youre rebelling against a dictator whos been a thorn in Americas side, you get airstrikes and UN resolutions; if youre rebelling against tyrants who are forthcoming with their oil or ports, you're lucky if the Secretary of State will bestir herself for a round of finger-wagging as your comrades are coldly murdered in the streets.

Media Ignores Brutal Crackdowns by US Allies Bahrain and Yemen

Zaid Jilani, Think Progress: 'One of the major factors in the success so far of the 'Jasmine Revolution' ? the wave of pro-democracy revolts across the Middle East ? has been the empowering international press coverage of the protests. Yet in recent weeks, this coverage in the United States has been overwhelmingly focused on just one country where these revolts are occurring ? Libya. While the events in Libya, where rebels are battling the Qaddafi dictatorship, certainly merit coverage, the American press has unfortunately failed to provide the same detailed coverage to the events in Yemen and Bahrain, two U.S. allies where mostly nonviolent protesters are being brutally put down by the armed forces in those countries.'

Washington and the Civilians of Libya

Libya, Hypocrisy and Betrayal by the United Nations

By Felicity Arbuthnot

Shame on France, shame on Britain and the US and a UN avowed: '... to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. Every shattered body, every child maimed or blown to bits, every widow, widower, orphan, will have their name of those countries, and the UN, written in their blood in their place of death.

UK: LIBYA EMERGENCY PROTEST: HANDS OFF LIBYA:

Britain and the USA have bombed Libya with more than one hundred Tomahawk cruise missiles. These are not precision guided weapons but weapons of mass destruction that will create many civilian casualties in Libya.

Libyas No-Fly, No-Drive Zone

If Gaddafi refuses to obey a cease-fire order, the international coalition could agree on a hard strike against airfields and armored columns, troop barracks, military headquarters and other military facilities that already have been identified and targeted. A full-out strike might cost between $500 million and $1 billion, according to the CSBA analysis.

West overzealous on Libya

The overzealousness of certain Western powers like Britain, France and, as of late, the US, to interpret the resolution as an open-ended use of force, is worrisome.

NPR: The Saga Continues

Bill Moyers and Michael Winship, Truthout: 'Theres no more scrupulous or versatile broadcast journalist than NPRs Daniel Zwerdling. He is one of those reporters who keeps his eye on the sparrow that is, on small details from individual lives that add up to significant issues of public policy. As he described in a special report this week how the United States Army is clarifying guidelines 'that should make it easier for soldiers with traumatic brain injuries from explosions to receive the Purple Heart,' it was mind-boggling to think that right wingers in Congress were at that very moment voting to eliminate the modest federal funds that make such essential and authoritative reporting available to anyone in America who cares to tune in.'

The honor in war

by Debbie Harbeson
Jeffersonville Evening News

08/11/11

I have been thinking a lot about war lately. This is partly due to the U.S. Postal Service s government-granted monopoly on delivering first-class mail. See, I recently discovered that the stamps with the odd shape I have been using for a while, and slapping on envelopes upside down, are commemorating the Purple Heart. As most of you probably already know, the Purple Heart is an attempt to make us all feel better about the damage done to individuals who were unlucky enough to get physically wounded or killed by our nation-state s involvement in various wars...

Arab Uprisings Cast Harsh Light on CIA Relationships

Mark Mazzetti and Scott Shane, New York Times News Service: 'The uprising against [Muammar el-Qaddafi], along with the revolts that drove out the presidents of Tunisia and Egypt and threaten other rulers, have cast a harsh light on the cozy relationships between America?s intelligence agencies and autocratic, often brutal Arab governments. The CIA faces questions about whether such ties blinded it to undercurrents of dissent and may now damage Americas standing with emerging democratic governments.'

Saying No to the Nuclear Option

Sarah Laskow, The Media Consortium: 'Faced with the nuclear crisis in Japan, governments around the world are confronting the vulnerabilities of their nuclear energy programs. And while some European countries, such as Germany and France, are already considering more stringent safety measures - or backing off of nuclear development altogether - in the United States, the Obama administration is pushing forward with plans for increased nuclear energy production. Ultimately, these questions are the same that the country faced after last summer's Gulf Coast oil spill. As we search for more and more clever ways to fill our energy needs, can we write off the risk of disaster? Or are these large-scale catastrophes so inevitable that the only option is to stop pursuing the policies that lead to them?'

http://www.truth-out.org/saying-no-nuclear-option68577

Here, on the Other Side of the Ring of Fire

Alexander Cockburn, Truthout: 'Americans read the increasingly panic-stricken reports of deepening catastrophe at Fukushima 1, speed to the pharmacy to buy iodine and ask, 'It's happened there; can it happen here?' Along much of California's coastline runs the 'ring of fire,' which stretches round the Pacific plate, from Australia, north past Japan, to Russia, round to Alaska, down America's West Coast to Chile. 90 percent of the world's earthquakes happen round the ring. The late great environmentalist David Brower used to tell audiences, 'Nuclear plants are incredibly complex technological devices for locating earthquake faults.'

Two Ghouls

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: 'Ive spent the last few days walking around my quiet little Boston neighborhood looking at the houses, the cars, the shops, the trees. I look at my wife, my neighbors, my cat. Then I close my eyes, and in that darkness I see it all wiped out, washed away, obliterated, shattered to kindling and utterly gone. I see a moonscape of annihilation, no reference points in sight, nothing familiar. I see the day after the end of everything, and the horror of it comes nowhere close to the reality that is Japan.'

Tepco, Security Sacrificed on the Altar of Profit

Rosa Moussaoui, l'Humanite: 'Profit at any price: This could be the motto of Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), the multinational that exploits the nuclear power plants at Fukushima. The largest producer of electricity in the world illustrates the excesses of an industrial sector in which neo-liberalism has unfurled to the last extremities of its destructive logic.'
