Can you afford wars of choice?

Downsize DC Downsize DC
by James Leroy Wilson

04/11/11

The U.S. is fighting three wars -- in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya - even though we are going broke. Each is a 'War of Choice,' not necessity. None of these countries threatens us. Afghanistan did host Al Qaeda, but that crime was punished years ago. So how does the U.S. end up fighting 'wars of choice?' Other countries dont do this...

How government has become suicidal

The Orange County Register
by Robert Samuelson

04/11/11

We in America have created suicidal government; the threatened federal shutdown and stubborn budget deficits are but symptoms. By suicidal, I mean that government has promised more than it can realistically deliver and, as a result, repeatedly disappoints by providing less than people expect or jeopardizing what they already have. But government cant easily correct its excesses, because Americans depend on it for so much that any effort to change the status arouses a firestorm of opposition that virtually ensures defeat...

Government Calls Native American Resistance of 1800s 'Much Like Modern-Day Al-Qaeda'

Vincent Warren, Truthout: 'The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) issued a statement concerning the hearing before the United States Court of Military Commission Review in United States v. Al Bahlul, before its scheduled date of March 17, 2011. Al Bahlul is the first appeal of a Guantanamo military commission conviction to proceed before the Court of Military Commission Review. The case is notable because, in essence, it is a conviction in desperate search of supporting war crimes. But it's also notable for the ahistorical and racist rhetoric in the government briefs that suggest equivalency between Native Americans resisting US takeover of their homelands and al-Qaeda.'

Government by People Who Hate You

Dean Baker, Truthout: 'House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan put out a budget proposal last week that will leave the vast majority of future retirees without decent health care by ending Medicare as we know it. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis, most middle-income retirees would have to pay almost half of their income to purchase a Medicare equivalent insurance package by 2030. They would be paying much more than half of their income in later years.'

The Vote This Week to End Medicare and Social Security

Bill Scher, Campaign for Americas Future: 'Last month, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor literally said Social Security 'cannot exist if we want America to be what we want America to be.' Then last week, House Budget Committee literally approved the end of Medicare as guaranteed affordable comprehensive health insurance for every retired American. The full House is expected to follow suit this week.'

Lines Drawn for Next Big Budget Battle, the Debt Ceiling

David Goldstein, McClatchy Newspapers: 'House Republicans, fresh from their showdown with Democrats over cuts in the current federal budget, promised Sunday to take an even tougher stand on spending next month when Congress will be asked to increase the amount of money the government is allowed to borrow.'

Government should be banned from borrowing

Adam Smith Institute
by Eamonn Butler

04/11/11

For a very long time, it has seemed perfectly natural that governments could and should borrow -- to finance expensive wars or infrastructure projects, for example. Keynesian economists saw the occasional deficit as an important way of managing the economy. But once you give politicians the power to borrow, a huge moral hazard arises. It becomes just too tempting, and too easy, to borrow for the purposes of current consumption, rather than future benefit...

The American Dream As We Know It Is Obsolete

Norman Solomon: 'You Cant Really Trust the Media'

By RT

While the American media discusses the dilemma in the Middle East to a degree, are we really getting the big picture back home? Normon Salomon of the Institute for Public Accuracy says that though the Internet and blogging has allowed a new outlook to be exposed, mainstream media still paints the picture of a paradisaical United States.

The American Dream As We Know It Is Obsolete

By Arun Gupta

However outdated the American Dream, organized labor and liberals desperately cling to it as they retreat in the face of the Republican and corporate blitzkrieg. In this war, the battlefield is social spending and the public sector, and for the losing side the situation is dire.

When intervention is easy

Cato Institute

04/08/11

Power gives American presidents more choices than other leaders. U.S. military capabilities and wealth make almost any global action possible. And the Cold War that checked much of our proclivity for intervention is over. To fight as we do in Afghanistan, even most wealthy nations would have to hike taxes or slash other expenditures, provoking domestic opposition. We do it with less than 1 percent of gross domestic product, mostly borrowed. Because we can intervene relatively cheaply, temptation always beckons...
