Unions Join Occupy Activists in Mass Protest Marches Across America

Lesley Clark and Gianna Palmer, McClatchy Newspapers: 'The Occupy Wall Street movement - looking to show staying power after losing prime real estate in various cities - got a boost of support across the country Thursday from labor and progressive organizations in what union organizers said is the most visible sign that they are working with the activists to press for change.'

Occupy: Cathedrals and Ivory Towers

David Palumbo-Liu, Truthout: 'This past weekend in the UK saw people walking about sporting red poppies on their lapels. It was Armistice Day on Friday, November 11, and Sunday, November 13 was Remembrance Day. On Thursday, I attended Paul Gilroy's conference on 'Shock and Awe' at the London School of Economics (LSE), where speakers reflected on the history of aerial bombing, the deployment of massive strategic attacks on noncombatants.'

Levin, McCain target American citizens

Campaign for Liberty
by mostrolenk

11/17/11

'Section 1031 [of the National Defense Authorization Act] would apparently give the President the power to order the military to subject United States Citizens and other persons present in the United States to indefinite detention without trial or charge. ... The two Senators who are pushing the bill with the controversial provision intact are Carl Levin (D-MI) and John McCain (R-AZ) ...

This Is What America Looks Like

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: 'Let s get a few things straight right from the jump. First of all, despite all the gleeful obituaries that have been appearing across the scabrous landscape of the 'mainstream' news media, the Occupy movement is not, in fact, over. Mayor Michael Bloomberg may have sent in cops like thieves in the night to dispossess peaceful protesters and destroy books in New York City, but there are hundreds of Occupy camps still standing from one side of this nation to the other.'

Brookfield Deploys Private Security Squadron to Liberty Plaza Park

J.A. Myerson, Truthout: 'There is a new group of people occupying Liberty Plaza Park. Clad in dark clothes with glowing yellow vests, a group of husky security guards, all of them white men, now patrol the park. Since Monday night s eviction of the occupation by New York s Police and Sanitation Departments, under the orders of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Liberty Plaza Park, whose specific commission is to provide access to the public 24 hours a day, has been surrounded by metal barricades, a handful of one-person-wide breaks providing the only entrances and exits.'

San Francisco Police Arrest 100 in Bank of America Protest

Maura Dolan, The Los Angeles Times: 'Protesters in the Occupy Wall Street movement seized a Bank of America branch in the city s financial district Wednesday, a demonstration that forced jittery customers and employees to flee and ended in nearly 100 arrests. It took about 40 police officers in riot gear nearly four hours to clear the bank, but no one was injured. Police said many of those arrested were UC Santa Cruz students who were protesting fee increases and budget cuts.'

Billionaires Use Tax Loophole to Lower Their Tax Rates to One Percent

Pat Garofalo, ThinkProgress: 'In 2009, 1,470 households reported income of more than $1 million but paid no federal income tax on it, through their use of various tax loopholes and shelters. Tax rates for millionaires have fallen by 25 percent since the mid-'90s, while one quarter of millionaires currently pay lower tax rates than the average middle-class household?. The tax code is full of provisions that help the very wealthy, like the pernicious carried interest loophole or the preferential treatment of investment income. And the end result is a tax code that advantages the 1 percent over the 99 percent.'

Gingrich got $1.6 million from Freddie Mac

Bloomberg News
11/16/11

Newt Gingrich made between $1.6 million and $1.8 million in consulting fees from two contracts with mortgage company Freddie Mac, according to two people familiar with the arrangement. The total amount is significantly larger than the $300,000 payment from Freddie Mac that Gingrich was asked about during a Republican presidential debate on Nov. 9 sponsored by CNBC, and more than was disclosed in the middle of congressional investigations into the housing industry collapse...

Karl Rove Flips Out at Protesters: 'Who Gave You the Right to Occupy America?'

Zaid Jilani, ThinkProgress: 'Last night, former Bush official Karl Rove appeared at Johns Hopkins University to speak as a part of the annual Milton S. Eisenhower Symposium. Rove soon discovered that he was not going to deliver his right-wing rhetoric unopposed, as a cry of 'Mic Check!' rang out among the audience. 'Karl Rove is the architect of Occupy Iraq, the architect of Occupy Afghanistan!' yelled the demonstrators. Occupy Baltimore had infiltrated the crowd and began chanting against Rove. 'Who gave you the right to occupy America?'
asked Rove to the protesters, apparently unaware of the Bill of Rights.'

After the Zuccotti Park Raid

Danny Schechter, Consortium News: 'Driven from its iconic encampment in Lower Manhattan, the Occupy Wall Street movement struggled to recover its political footing - and find a new geographical center - but its success in changing America s economic discussion cannot be doubted ... 'They can take away the tarps and the tents. But they can t slow down the Occupy Wall Street movement. The 99% is undaunted. Occupy Wall Street s message has already created a new day. This movement has created a seismic shift in our national debate - from austerity and cuts to jobs, inequality and our broken economic system.' So, clearly, despite the loss of the Park, this movement will move on. The question remains: where is it moving - and how can it bring along the large number of Americans who support it?

How Wealthy Companies Like Verizon Avoid Taxes

Dave Johnson, Campaign for America's Future: 'Earlier this month, the organization Citizens for Tax Justice joined with the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy to release a report, 'Corporate Taxpayers and Corporate Tax Dodgers, 2008-2010.' The report looked at 280 corporations, finding that 78 did not pay federal taxes in at least one of the past three years and 30 averaged a less-than-zero tax bill in the last three years. Yes, less-than-zero, meaning they got money from the government instead of paying taxes to the government.'

'Occupy' crackdowns coordinated with federal law enforcement officials

Over the past ten days, more than a dozen cities have moved to evict 'Occupy' protesters from city parks and other public spaces. As was the case in last night s move in New York City, each of the police actions shares a number of characteristics. And according to one Justice official, each of those actions was coordinated with help from Homeland Security, the FBI and other federal police agencies...

Half of Vets Returning From Iraq and Afghanistan Need Medical Attention

Eric Newhouse, Truthout: 'More than half of America s former warriors are returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan with medical and mental problems that need treatment, according to new statistics from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). PTSD was the most common mental health complaint with 197,074 vets receiving treatment, which is about 15 percent of the returning vets ... The VA s real surprise is the low number of diagnoses for traumatic brain injury (TBI), which has become one of the signature injuries in the Iraqi/Afghanistan conflict due to the large number of roadside bombs, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades ... But the VA says only 54,070 vets (a little over 4 percent of the returning vets) qualified for that diagnosis.'

Occupy Movement Prepares for Mass Day of Action in Defiance of Crackdowns

Mike Ludwig, Truthout: 'Thursday, November 17, marks the two-month anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, and an international day of nonviolent direct action has been called in New York, Portland, and other cities across the nation and globe. Meanwhile, the Occupy movement continues to fill the streets and set up camps across the country in defiance of recent moves by authorities to clear major camps in New York, San Francisco, Berkeley and Portland ... Occupiers in New York with rally outside Wall Street in the morning and join a mass labor rally later in the day. Marches and occupations are also planned in Portland, Madrid and cities across Germany and Belgium.'

Criticism, Violence and Roosting Chickens

Richard D. Wolff, Truthout: 'The 99 percent offered criticism of the 1 percent. They struggled peacefully to inform and mobilize public opinion. They won huge numbers of hearts and minds. The 1 percent in the US did what their counterparts in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, and so on did earlier this year ... So now, the weapon of criticism wielded by the 99 percent suffers the counter criticism of violence by servants of the 1 percent. No one will miss which side resorted to organized, massive violence so early and so unnecessarily in this conflict. As in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, having failed to win hearts and minds, US government agencies cover their failure by resorting to violence.'

How Progressives Won the Labor Rights Showdown in Ohio

Amy Dean, Truthout: 'Last week, the labor movement and its allies scored a major victory with the repeal of Ohio Senate Bill 5 (SB5), a piece of anti-union legislation signed by Republican Gov. John Kasich. In a referendum that gave voters a chance to speak on the issue, Ohioans resoundingly rejected the law, which would have gutted the bargaining rights of 350,000 public-sector workers. In a landmark defeat for Republicans, voters turned out in large numbers and voted 61 percent to 39 percent to strike down SB5.'

Lessons of a Police Chief: Militarization Is a Mistake

Norm Stamper, Yes! Magazine: 'The police chief who oversaw Seattle s crackdown on WTO protesters learned the dangers of militarization. His advice for a creating a police force that truly serves and protects communities. They came from all over, tens of thousands of demonstrators from around the world, protesting the economic and moral pitfalls of globalization. Our mission as members of the Seattle Police Department? To safeguard people and property - in that order. Things went well the first day. We were praised for our friendliness and restraint - though some politicians were apoplectic at our refusal to make mass arrests for the actions of a few.'

A Tale of Two New York City Officials

J.A. Myerson, Truthout: 'This is an era of revolution, aristocracy, democratic fervor and authoritarian violence. It is a confusing time, when Russell Simmons, who hawks a credit card that bears his moniker, and Alec Baldwin, who does commercials for Capital One, both claim solidarity with Occupy Wall Street, the very identity of which stands opposed to a nefarious financial sector s abuse of American society and politics. It can sometimes be difficult, therefore, to identify heroes and villains reliably. In the wake of the eviction of Liberty Plaza Park, though, two city officials have emerged to fill those roles very clearly.'

USA verlagern Drohnen aus dem Irak in die Türkei

Das Pentagon will damit weiter die Bekämpfung der PKK unterstützen, riskiert aber einen Konflikt mit der irakischen Regierung und den irakischen Kurden.
