Insbesondere in Nordrhein-Westfalen ist die SPD als langjährige Regierungspartei mit der regional stark verankerten Energiewirtschaft auf das Engste verbunden. Viele Politiker stammen aus Familien mit Bergbauvergangenheit und haben die Affinität zur Kohle in die Wiege gelegt bekommen. Viele aber haben nicht nur eine ideelle Verbindung zum dreckigsten aller Energieträger, sondern sind Teil der Konzernspitzen. Unzählige Sozialdemokraten sitzen in den Aufsichtsräten und Beiräten der Kohlekonzerne.
