Weiter:

It s Time We Recognized the Blair Government's Criminality

John Pilger, Truthout: ''In the Kabuki theater of British parliamentary politics, great crimes do not happen and criminals go free.... The farewell speech of one of the most artful, Tony Blair, had 'a sense of moral conviction running through it,' effused the television presenter Jon Snow, as if Blair s appeal to Kabuki devotees was mystical. That he was a war criminal was irrelevant.''

'Near Poor' Struggling Just Above Poverty Startle the Census

Jason DeParle, Robert Gebeloff and Sabrina Tavernise, The New York Times News Service: 'When the Census Bureau this month released a new measure of poverty, meant to better count disposable income, it began altering the portrait of national need. Perhaps the most startling differences between the old measure and the new involves data the government has not yet published, showing 51 million people with incomes less than 50 percent above the poverty line. That number of Americans is 76 percent higher than the official account, published in September. All told, that places 100 million people - one in three Americans - either in poverty or in the fretful zone just above it.'

Caught on Camera: Ten Shockingly Violent Police Assaults on Occupy Protesters

Joshua Holland, AlterNet: 'Probably 97 percent of police act professionally toward protesters. But the other 3 percent are armed and dangerous, and know that they are unlikely to be held accountable?. When a cop loses his or her cool, it can be terrifying. And when a protester exercising his or her right to assemble and speak is a victim of excessive force, it also violates the United States Constitution. Unlike protesters, cops are also armed, and it s difficult to hold them accountable for their actions when they don t behave professionally. But, as Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union told AlterNet last month, ?public video recording has dramatically changed the landscape of police accountability, no question about it. It s a lot harder for police to sweep allegations of abuse under the rug when it s on video and on YouTube.'

Lessons We Can Learn From Egypt

Mehrdad Azemun, Truthout: 'The most valuable organizing nugget I carried back with me is the continual necessity for acting and thinking boldly. As an organizer here in the US, I was taught to be pragmatic and practical - go for what you can win in a specific time horizon?. Before Egypt, I was taught that politics is the art of the possible. After Egypt, I question whether we should all be reaching for the impossible and ludicrous. Who knows who else might agree? A common call for the laughable and ridiculous widens the possibility for what can and should happen.'

The economics of war

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Robert P. Murphy

11/16/11

The market economy involves peaceful cooperation. The division of labor cannot function effectively amidst a war. Warfare among primitive tribes did not suffer this drawback because the warring parties had not been engaged in trade before the hostilities. Thus they engaged in total war. Things were different in Europe (before the French Revolution) when military, financial, and political circumstances produced limited warfare...

This Is What America Looks Like

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: 'Let s get a few things straight right from the jump. First of all, despite all the gleeful obituaries that have been appearing across the scabrous landscape of the 'mainstream' news media, the Occupy movement is not, in fact, over. Mayor Michael Bloomberg may have sent in cops like thieves in the night to dispossess peaceful protesters and destroy books in New York City, but there are hundreds of Occupy camps still standing from one side of this nation to the other.'

Since Monday night s eviction of the occupation by New York s Police and Sanitation Departments, under the orders of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Liberty Plaza Park, whose specific commission is to provide access to the public 24 hours a day, has been surrounded by metal barricades, a handful of one-person-wide breaks providing the only entrances and exits.'

Pat Garofalo, ThinkProgress: 'In 2009, 1,470 households reported income of more than $1 million but paid no federal income tax on it, through their use of various tax loopholes and shelters. Tax rates for millionaires have fallen by 25 percent since the mid-'90s, while one quarter of millionaires currently pay lower tax rates than the average middle-class household?. The tax code is full of provisions that help the very wealthy, like the pernicious carried interest loophole or the preferential treatment of investment income.

Interessenskonflikte.

Nuclear hysteria in Iran

The American Conservative
by Eric Margolis

11/15/11

Washington has worked for the past 20 years to make the UN the 'soft' arm of US foreign policy. The US is the UN s biggest contributor; it pays 25.8% of the costs of the IAEA and has put its own men in positions of influence. Even so, the latest UN reports hedges conclusions with words like 'suggests' and 'appears.' If Iran is indeed trying to produce nuclear weapons -- and it has good reasons for wanting them - why has it taken so long?

Gingrich got $1.6 million from Freddie Mac

Bloomberg News
11/16/11

Newt Gingrich made between $1.6 million and $1.8 million in consulting fees from two contracts with mortgage company Freddie Mac, according to two people familiar with the arrangement. The total amount is significantly larger than the $300,000 payment from Freddie Mac that Gingrich was asked about during a Republican presidential debate on Nov. 9 sponsored by CNBC, and more than was disclosed in the middle of congressional investigations into the housing industry collapse...

Karl Rove Flips Out at Protesters: 'Who Gave You the Right to Occupy America?'

Zaid Jilani, ThinkProgress: 'Last night, former Bush official Karl Rove appeared at Johns Hopkins University to speak as a part of the annual Milton S. Eisenhower Symposium. Rove soon discovered that he was not going to deliver his right-wing rhetoric unopposed, as a cry of 'Mic Check!' rang out among the audience. 'Karl Rove is the architect of Occupy Iraq, the architect of Occupy Afghanistan!' yelled the demonstrators. Occupy Baltimore had infiltrated the crowd and began chanting against Rove. 'Who gave you the right to occupy America?'
asked Rove to the protesters, apparently unaware of the Bill of Rights.'

After the Zuccotti Park Raid

Danny Schechter, Consortium News: 'Driven from its iconic encampment in Lower Manhattan, the Occupy Wall Street movement struggled to recover its political footing - and find a new geographical center - but its success in changing America s economic discussion cannot be doubted ... 'They can take away the tarps and the tents. But they can t slow down the Occupy Wall Street movement. The 99% is undaunted. Occupy Wall Street s message has already created a new day. This movement has created a seismic shift in our national debate - from austerity and cuts to jobs, inequality and our broken economic system.' So, clearly, despite the loss of the Park, this movement will move on. The question remains: where is it moving - and how can it bring along the large number of Americans who support it?

How Wealthy Companies Like Verizon Avoid Taxes

Dave Johnson, Campaign for America's Future: 'Earlier this month, the organization Citizens for Tax Justice joined with the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy to release a report, 'Corporate Taxpayers and Corporate Tax Dodgers, 2008-2010.' The report looked at 280 corporations, finding that 78 did not pay federal taxes in at least one of the past three years and 30 averaged a less-than-zero tax bill in the last three years. Yes, less-than-zero, meaning they got money from the government instead of paying taxes to the government.'

The march included an action blocking a major bridge over the Chicago River during rush hour, ending in 46 tickets for 'Pedestrian Failure to Exercise Due Care,' and a long march that at one point blocked traffic on the major Lake Shore Drive thoroughfare.'

'Occupy' crackdowns coordinated with federal law enforcement officials
Minneapolis Top News Examiner

11/15/11

Over the past ten days, more than a dozen cities have moved to evict 'Occupy' protesters from city parks and other public spaces. As was the case in last night s move in New York City, each of the police actions shares a number of characteristics. And according to one Justice official, each of those actions was coordinated with help from Homeland Security, the FBI and other federal police agencies...

Occupy Movement Prepares for Mass Day of Action in Defiance of Crackdowns

Mike Ludwig, Truthout: 'Thursday, November 17, marks the two-month anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, and an international day of nonviolent direct action has been called in New York, Portland, and other cities across the nation and globe. Meanwhile, the Occupy movement continues to fill the streets and set up camps across the country in defiance of recent moves by authorities to clear major camps in New York, San Francisco, Berkeley and Portland ... Occupiers in New York with rally outside Wall Street in the morning and join a mass labor rally later in the day. Marches and occupations are also planned in Portland, Madrid and cities across Germany and Belgium.'

Criticism, Violence and Roosting Chickens

Richard D. Wolff, Truthout: 'The 99 percent offered criticism of the 1 percent. They struggled peacefully to inform and mobilize public opinion. They won huge numbers of hearts and minds. The 1 percent in the US did what their counterparts in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, and so on did earlier this year ... So now, the weapon of criticism wielded by the 99 percent suffers the counter criticism of violence by servants of the 1 percent. No one will miss which side resorted to organized, massive violence so early and so unnecessarily in this conflict. As in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, having failed to win hearts and minds, US government agencies cover their failure by resorting to violence.'

How Progressives Won the Labor Rights Showdown in Ohio

Amy Dean, Truthout: 'Last week, the labor movement and its allies scored a major victory with the repeal of Ohio Senate Bill 5 (SB5), a piece of anti-union legislation signed by Republican Gov. John Kasich. In a referendum that gave voters a chance to speak on the issue, Ohioans resoundingly rejected the law, which would have gutted the bargaining rights of 350,000 public-sector workers. In a landmark defeat for Republicans, voters turned out in large numbers and voted 61 percent to 39 percent to strike down SB5.'

Lessons of a Police Chief: Militarization Is a Mistake

Norm Stamper, Yes! Magazine: 'The police chief who oversaw Seattle s crackdown on WTO protesters learned the dangers of militarization. His advice for a creating a police force that truly serves and protects communities. They came from all over, tens of thousands of demonstrators from around the world, protesting the economic and moral pitfalls of globalization. Our mission as members of the Seattle Police Department? To safeguard people and property - in that order. Things went well the first day. We were praised for our friendliness and restraint - though some politicians were apoplectic at our refusal to make mass arrests for the actions of a few.'

A Tale of Two New York City Officials

J.A. Myerson, Truthout: 'This is an era of revolution, aristocracy, democratic fervor and authoritarian violence. It is a confusing time, when Russell Simmons, who hawks a credit card that bears his moniker, and Alec Baldwin, who does commercials for Capital One, both claim solidarity with Occupy Wall Street, the very identity of which stands opposed to a nefarious financial sector s abuse of American society and politics. It can sometimes be difficult, therefore, to identify heroes and villains reliably. In the wake of the eviction of Liberty Plaza Park, though, two city officials have emerged to fill those roles very clearly.'

Occupy Wall Street Protesters Regroup After Morning Raid on Zuccotti Park

J.A. Myerson, Truthout: 'In the smallest hours of the morning, with no warning or apparent provocation, hundreds of New York Police Department (NYPD) officers, some from the department s counterterrorism unit, many in riot gear, demolished thousands of dollars of private property, including a 5,000-volume library; beat and arrested a large number of peacefully protesting citizens, including credentialed journalists and democratically-elected public officials; and in the process, violated not just the First and Fourth Amendments to the US Constitution, a document they are sworn to uphold, but also a court injunction. Tens of thousands watched the live stream as it broadcast protesters scrambling to comply with the instructions of police officers, who declined to issue a timeframe, electing instead to warn and immediately invade.'

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan Admits Cities Coordinated Crackdown on Occupy Movement

Gregg Levine, Capitoilette: 'Embattled Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, speaking in an interview with the BBC (excerpted on The Takeaway radio program - audio of Quan starts at the 5:30 mark), casually mentioned that she was on a conference call with leaders of 18 US cities shortly before a wave of raids broke up Occupy Wall Street encampments across the country. 'I was recently on a conference call with 18 cities across the country who had the same situation....' Mayor Quan then rambles about how she 'spoke with protestors in my city' who professed an interest in 'separating from anarchists,' implying that her police action was helping this somehow.'

Smear Campaigns Fuel Shutdowns of Occupations Across Country

Michael Corcoran, Truthout: 'A new and vicious smear campaign against the Occupy movement is in full swing. The narrative of this campaign is to portray the movement as a hotbed for violent crime and danger. This false narrative, if it sticks, could prompt more city and town officials across the country to shut down occupations, as the City of New York has attempted to do just this morning, and weaken the movement. This cannot be tolerated.'

http://www.truth-out.org/smear-campaigns-fuel-shutdowns-occupations-across-country/1321386431

Media Coverage Fails to Tell the Personal Stories of Occupy Protesters

Rose Aguilar, Truthout: 'Occupy movements in small towns across the United States are multiplying in size, but it s all too rare to hear the voices of the people taking part, even in local media outlets. There is no official site compiling the number of Occupy locations across the country, but according to this Occupy Spreadsheet, there are 38 movements across the state of California and that s not counting camps in large cities.'

http://www.truth-out.org/media-coverage-fails-tell-personal-stories-occupy-protesters/1321296763

This Morning at Occupy Wall Street

Matt Renner, Truthout: 'This morning, I watched lower Manhattan turn into a militarized lockdown. The park known as Liberty Square was apparently cleared by force, though I arrived 20 minutes after the police barricades encircled a two-block radius, kicked out all media and prevented all foot traffic on public sidewalks surrounding the park. This was expected. The emergency text message went out at 1:00 AM and read, 'URGENT: Hundreds of police mobilizing around Zuccotti. Eviction in progress!' prompting a mass mobilization of people like me, part-time protesters who signed up to converge on the park for the looming police raid on the physical heart of the Occupy movement.'

Arundhati Roy: Occupy Wall Street Is 'So Important Because It Is in the Heart of Empire'

Amy Goodman, Democracy NOW!: 'Renowned Indian writer and global justice activist Arundhati Roy is preparing to address Occupy Wall Street on Wednesday.... 'What they are doing becomes so important because it is in the heart of empire, or what used to be empire,' Roy said. 'And to criticize and to protest against the model that the rest of the world is aspiring to is a very important and a very serious business. So ... it makes me very, very hopeful that after a long time you are seeing some nascent political, real political anger here.'

The paradigm shifts

In These Times
by James Thindwa

11/15/11

The day after Occupy Wall Street began on September 17, GOP budget chief and austerity ideologue Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) warned on Fox News: 'Class warfare will simply divide this country more, [it] will attack job creators.' The two events were not related (the media was ignoring the protesters), but their contrasting messages reaffirmed a reality of American life: The elites - the real instigators of class warfare - inhabit a different universe than the rest of us...

Occupy the movement!

Serie in der Berliner Wochenzeitung ,Jungle World? erschien: http://jungle-world.com/artikel/2011/46/44344.html

Diskussionsbeitrag vom 12.
