Perry and the HPV Vaccine: Selling Women Health (and Everything Else) to the Highest Bidder

Martha Kempner, RH Reality Check: 'In 2007, Governor Rick Perry shocked both public health officials and his conservative base when he signed an executive order mandating that female students in Texas be vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) before entering the sixth grade. The order referred to Gardasil, a vaccine that had been approved by the FDA only a few months earlier after having been found to prevent infection with four strains of HPV, including two strains that account for 70 percent of cervical cancer and two that account for 90 percent of genital warts. The FDA approved the three-shot regimen for young women ages nine to 26 and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended that this become part of the routine vaccinations of girls at ages 11 or 12 because 'it is important for girls to get HPV vaccine before their first sexual contact - because they won t have been exposed to human papillomavirus.'

Die Bundesregierung fährt Europa gegen die Wand

Zur Regierungskrise im Zusammenhang mit dem geplanten Euro-Rettungsschirm und der Hilfen für Griechenland erklärt die Vorsitzende der Partei DIE LINKE, Gesine Lötzsch:

Vizekanzler Rösler ist Europa völlig gleichgültig. Er kämpft nur noch um sein politisches Überleben und ist dafür auch bereit, die Zukunft Europas aufs Spiel zu setzen. Die Mehrheit in unserem Land lehnt die Europa-Politik der Bundesregierung ab. Die Bürger sind nichtmehr bereit, die Kosten der Krise zu tragen. Es wird Zeit, dass die zur Kasse gebeten werden, die die Krise verursacht haben. Doch dagegen sträubt sich die Bundesregierung mit Händen und Füßen. Merkel, Rösler und Seehofer wollen den Euro mit den Rezepten retten, mit denen er in die Krise getrieben wurde. Die Bundesregierung hat die Verantwortung für ihre Politik an Banken und Rating-Agenturen übertragen. Das ist der Hauptgrund für die Euro-Krise. Wer das nicht ändert, wird von einer Krise in die nächste taumeln.

DIE LINKE hatte schon beim 1. Rettungsschirm gefordert, dass die Finanzspritzen zur Rettung der Banken nur mit strengen Auflagen für die Finanzindustrie verbunden sein müssen. Drei Jahre ist nichts passiert. DIE LINKE verlangt von der Bundesregierung eine verbindliche Garantieerklärung, dass im Haftungsfall des Euro-Rettungsschirms Löhne, Renten und Sozialleistungen nicht angetastet und Massensteuern nicht erhöht werden. Wir brauchen grundsätzliche Änderungen in Europa. Wir brauchen Verteilungsgerechtigkeit, Demokratie, Transparenz und die Rückgewinnung desPrimats der Politik, doch das ist mit dieser Regierung nicht zu machen.
