The Global Debt Crisis: How We Got in It and How to Get Out

Ellen Brown, Truthout: 'Contrary to popular belief, most of our money today is not created by governments. It is created by private banks as loans. The private system of money creation has grown so powerful over the centuries that it has come to dominate governments globally. The system, however, contains the seeds of its own destruction. The source of its power is also a fatal design flaw. The flaw is that banks advance 'bank credit' that must be paid back with interest, continually requiring more money to be repaid than was created as loans; and the only way to get additional money from the private banking system is to take out yet more loans, at interest. The system is, in effect, a pyramid scheme. When the banks run out of borrowers to support the pyramid, it must collapse; and we are nearing that point today. There are more sustainable ways to run a banking and credit system.'

Past Trade Agreements Have Cut Jobs, Wages and Democracy

Dave Johnson, Campaign for America's Future: 'Our trade agreements have pitted working people in countries that do not protect rights or people against the working people here who fought to win the protections of democracy. The result has been devastating to our communities, our economy and our democracy. America is (was, anyway) a democracy governed by We, the People. As Monday s Memorial Day ceremonies remind us Americans fought and sacrificed to build and keep the protections and benefits that democracy offers. Those include good jobs with good wages, worker safety laws, rules preventing companies from polluting, and so many other things that companies complain make us less 'business-friendly.' But we got involved in 'trade' deals that let countries get around democracy s protections, pitting employees here against people who have no voice, no power and no money. You can see the results all around us.'

The Once and Future Dips of the US Economy

http://lewrockwell.com/bonner/bonner476.html

--------

The Ongoing Crisis and Liberal Blindness

Richard D. Wolff, Richard D. Wolff's Blog: 'The double dip of this crisis is upon us. The latest data agree: the housing market has been in full double-dip mode for five months as home prices keep declining. The foreclosure disaster keeps increasing the combination of homeless families and empty homes. Think capitalist efficiency. Unemployment rose back above 9 % again. The average length of unemployment is now 39.7 weeks, the longest since these records began in 1948. Investments by businesses are decelerating and governments keep dropping workers. Over 20 million workers are unemployed or underemployed. Over a quarter of the nation s productive capacity remains unutilized, gathering rust and dust. Annual output of $1 trillion is lost by wasting these resources. Think capitalist efficiency again.'

Worse than a third Bush term?

Campaign For Liberty
by Anthony Gregory

06/06/11

If in 2008 someone had said that Obama s war policy would be more belligerent and costlier than another round of Bush s, nearly no one would have believed it. Bush started a preventive war in Iraq, killing hundreds of thousands without any credible correlation to U.S. security, except perhaps a very negative one. He turned a hunt for bin Laden into an excuse to stumble around in Afghanistan at great cost without any clear idea of how the war and occupation were going to improve the situation there. He spent a trillion dollars, just in direct costs, and lost 4,000 American troops in these aggressive and endless wars.'

Skandalöser Kooperationsvertrag zwischen Deutscher Bank und Berliner Universitäten

30. Mai 2011

Did the recession ever really go away?

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Jeffrey A. Tucker

06/03/11

Housing prices hitting 2002 levels, unemployment still at 9 percent, private-sector job growth flat, and retail sales still struggling: these are headlines that few expected three years ago. The prevailing theory in Washington was that the recession was somehow precipitated (and therefore vaguely caused) by the crash in housing prices, and many big and small tricks were used to goose the market. But the price system has once again proven to be the greatest and most persistent practitioner of civil disobedience on the planet...

It is the sad height of hypocrisy when the United States, whose leaders claim to have the secret to world salvation (both politically and economically), not only corrupts international law to target others, but simultaneously goes to extraordinary lengths to protect its own nationals from that same law.

Pakistan s road to China

As the United States Congress threatens to cut off all aid. Gilani recently took a quick trip over the mountains to Beijing, and returned with an offer of immediate delivery of 50 fighter planes to Pakistan. Much more has been promised. Given China s record as a provider of aid to Pakistan, these promises will quickly be realized.

Pentagon Using Drug Wars as Excuse to Build Bases in Latin America

John Lindsay-Poland, New America Media: 'Under the auspices of the drug war, the United States is returning to its historical pattern of using Central America and the Caribbean for its own military and strategic purposes. Even as a growing chorus of voices throughout Latin America argue that military responses to drug trafficking are ineffective against the narcotics trade and exacerbate existing human rights abuses and official corruption, the U.S. military presence in the region is growing.'

Greetings From a 21st-Century Prophet

Max Eternity, Truthout: 'Even after the ... hip, hip, hurrah of President Obama s ordered assassination of Osama bin Laden, a cornucopia of catastrophic socioeconomic horrors still face this nation... endless war, long-term unemployment, swelling prison populations and multiple years of record-breaking home foreclosures... But they won t be here to stay if a certain brilliant, black man of prophetic word and deed can help it - namely, Dr. Cornel West. West equates America s banking elite with gangsters and deplores President Obama s choice to surround himself with their minions... This well-heeled phalanx of criminals is, in West s view, to blame for many, if not most, of Americas current ills.'

Secret Cash: The Worst Political Scandal of All

Michael Winship, Truthout: 'Give me a scandal, any scandal, and I ll show you how the corrosive influence of money on politics is at its root and makes what s bad even worse (okay, maybe not in the case of Anthony Weiner -- yet)... Citizens United and other court decisions that have unleashed a monster of unlimited and frequently anonymous private and corporate campaign cash against a nearly defenseless citizenry... The Greeks had a word for it - 'oligarchy' - political clout based on economic dominance.'

Why Washington Isn t Doing Squat About Jobs and Wages

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: 'The silence is deafening. While the rest of the nation is heading back toward a double dip, Washington continues to obsess about future budget deficits. Why? Republicans don t want to do anything about jobs and wages... Democrats, meanwhile, don t want to admit the recovery has stalled.... But there s a third reason for Washington?s inaction. It s not being talked about - which is itself evidence of the problem. The unemployed are politically invisible. They don t make major campaign donations. They don t lobby Congress. There s no National Association of Unemployed People.'

Risky Advice

Andy Stirling and Alister Scott, Project Syndicate: 'Why do we seem to be witnessing an increasing number of nasty technological surprises? Indeed, this year s Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan and last year s BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have taken their place alongside older problems, such as ozone depletion. We believe that the way in which scientific advice is developed and communicated lies at the heart of the question. Science is increasingly used to support what are essentially public-policy decisions, particularly concerning new and complex technologies.'

U.S. Could Be Headed for Iraq Redux

Despite Intelligence Rejecting Iran as Nuclear Threat, US Could Be Headed for Iraq Redux

Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, Democracy Now!: 'In his latest article for The New Yorker magazine, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh says the United States might attack Iran based on distorted estimates of Iran s nuclear and military threat - just like it did with Saddam Hussein s government in Iraq. Hersh reveals that despite using Iranian informants and cutting-edge surveillance technology, U.S. officials have been unable to find decisive evidence that Iran has been moving enriched uranium to an underground weapon-making center.'

General Keane Keen on Iran Attack

Ray McGovern, Consortium News: 'Celebrating a reunion with close friends of Fordham College (class of 1961) on a perfect June day in New York should be a time of little or no stress. So I should have avoided a long lecture by a retired four-star general from the class of 1966, Jack Keane. Keane, now on Fordham University s Board of Trustees, has been the go-to general for the neoconservatives in recent years. He said he was speaking to us before catching a flight to Europe where he would lobby leaders of the 41 NATO countries who, except for three, have been 'unwilling to ask their people to sacrifice' in places like Afghanistan. (By all indications, Keane has apparently given no thought to the possibility that the Europeans have been far quicker to understand that the war in Afghanistan - aka Vietnamistan - is a fool's errand.)'

Torture s comeback

The American Conservative
by Chase Madar

06/02/11

The killing of Osama bin Laden should have provoked some healthy debate about our ongoing reaction to the 9/11 attacks. Was this manhunt worth the $3 trillion estimated by National Journal? Does our alliance structure guarantee the creation of more bin Laden-type threats? Has our military response to 9/11 hurt us and others more than it has helped? Instead, the execution of bin Laden has launched a nostalgia craze for torture, whose great virtues, we are told, have been cruelly underappreciated...

A war fit for a king

Reason Reason
by Steve Chapman

06/02/11

[T]he framers stipulated that Congress has the power to 'declare war,' giving it the chief responsibility except when the president needed to act quickly to repel an attack. But in the ensuing centuries, presidents of both parties have often trampled over their original limits, and Congress has usually let them. This has not gone over well with all lawmakers - like the senator who said in 2007 that the president has no right to go to war on his own, barring an actual or potential attack. His name was Barack Obama. But President Obama has thoroughly repudiated the naive and simplistic notions voiced by Sen. Obama. In some ways, he has also been even more aggressive than his predecessors in doing whatever he pleases...

But he s our imperial president!

Cato Institute Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

06/02/11

Sometimes it s hard to remember that the presidency was supposed to be a constitutionally limited office. George Washington didn t imagine himself 'commander in chief of our economy,' in Hillary Clinton s bizarre formulation; our first president doubted that his powers as CINC even allowed him to attack hostile Indian tribes without congressional authorization. Nor did Washington refer to himself by his military title, preferring to call the office the 'chief magistracy,' a far humbler term...

In a relationship, and it s complicated

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Anthony Gregory

The idea that corporate interests, banking elites, and politicians conspire to set US policy is at once obvious and beyond the pale. Everyone knows that the military-industrial complex is fat and corrupt, that presidents bestow money and privilege on their donors and favored businesses, that a revolving door connects Wall Street and the White House, and that economic motivations lurk behind America s wars. But to make too fine a point of this is typically dismissed as unserious conspiracy theorizing, unworthy of mainstream consideration. We have seen this paradox at work in the aftermath of the 2008 financial collapse...

MSNBC s Flawed Coverage of Libya, Economy

Michael Corcoran and Stephen Maher, Truthout: 'When US bombs began to drop on Libya last month, representing the start of the third simultaneous US war (not including covert wars being waged by US Special Forces and the CIA in Yemen, Pakistan, Somalia, and elsewhere), it was not surprising to see the media jump into a pro-war frenzy, as it so often does. One might hope, however, that perhaps MSNBC - on the liberal side of acceptable discourse in US cable media - would at least offer significant skepticism toward another expensive and bloody US war. This is especially true given that 74 percent of the US population opposed US intervention. A close look, however, reveals the opposite is true. MSNBC, whose hosts align themselves closely with Barack Obama and the Democratic Party, has been perhaps the most hawkish station on cable news.'

http://www.truthout.org/msnbcs-flawed-coverage-libya-economy/1307021979

We Will Never Accept Unconstitutional War

Aimee Allison, Norman Solomon and David Swanson, RootsAction: 'On May 26, the U.S. House amended the Defense Authorization Act of 2012 to state that its passage in no way authorizes the current war in Libya, and to prohibit the introduction of U.S. ground troops into Libya. We must insist that the Senate uphold those amendments next week. At the same time, the House rejected amendments that would have limited or ended U.S. warfare in Afghanistan, and rejected an amendment that would have stripped Section 1034 from the bill. That section is perhaps the most fundamental change to the structure of our federal government that has ever appeared likely to pass through Congress, as it would effectively give the power to make war to all future presidents. We must demand that the Senate remove Section 1034.'

By Sherwood Ross

Tensions Mount Over Iraq, Nuke Sanctions

In recent weeks, a chorus of U.S. officials has accused Iran of providing lethal weapons to Iraqi Shiite militias that have targeted U.S. soldiers and caused a spike in U.S. death tolls. Similar charges have been made against Iran in the past.
