U.S. Troops In Afghanistan Suffer More Catastrophic Injuries

Losing a Partys Soul in Budget Fight

By Robert Kuttner

The 2012 budget proposal released Tuesday by Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan, chair of the House Budget Committee, would cut projected spending over the next decade by $5.8 trillion and further cut taxes. The plan would eliminate Medicare and Medicaid as we know them - and Social Security is next.

Bradley Manning: US government fails to follow its own rules

Over the past few weeks, the Bradley Manning defense has been working to facilitate an official visit for Congressman Dennis Kucinich, Mr. Juan Mendez (the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture), and a representative from Amnesty International. Despite multiple inquires from the defense and the interested parties, the Quantico Brig and the Government have denied the requests for an 'official visit.' The Quantico Brig Order P1640.1C, paragraph 3.17 allows two types of visitors for a detainee, 'authorized' and 'official.' The difference between them is described here in the Brig rule. The defense maintains that the critical distinction between the two is that official visits are privileged and not subject to Brig monitoring. Such an authorized visit, of course, will be subject to Brig monitoring and can be used as evidence against PFC Manning in a court-martial proceeding.

The Muslims are coming!

In a strange kind of delayed response, the American public seems to be in a more Islamaphobic mood now than it was right after 9/11, when a few Muslim terrorists transformed planes into bombs. Symptoms are everywhere, from widespread opposition to the building of mosques and other Islamic institutions, to congressional hearings amplifying fearful, anti-Islamic voices, to Muslim-oriented surveillance policies, to the use of agent provocateurs to entrap hapless malcontents. The list goes on, but one of the most unlikely avenues of attack is jurisprudence...

The follies of legalism

Suppose that our act of war in Libya is perfectly legal. This is to overlook the absence of congressional authorization, a clear violation of the US Constitution, but let?s leave that aside for now. If our war in Libya is legal does that make this war prudent, effective, benevolent, worthwhile? Does the legality of this war imply a moral obligation to wage it? A little reflection shows that legality in itself is never enough to justify any action...

Once upon a time, people actually believed that a president could not constitutionally commit troops abroad without a declaration of war by Congress. With some exceptions, that belief held presidents in check for a while. But it passed away sometime after 1942, and since then presidents have gone to war - big-time and small - whenever they damn well pleased. Congress has simply been too timid to assert itself against imperial presidents...

The rich have been getting richer and the poor and the middle class have been getting poorer

Bill Quigley, Truthout: 'The rich have been getting richer and the poor and the middle class have been getting poorer in the US recently. Here are seven examples that show how the US is going through 'Robin Hood in Reverse.' Between 1948 and 1979, the richest 10 percent of families in the US claimed 33 percent of average income growth. Between 2000 and 2007, the richest 10 percent claimed a full 100 percent of average income growth in the US, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Business taxes were cut from 46 to 34 percent 25 years ago, according to ProPublica. But today, 115 of the big 500 companies listed on Standard and Poors stock index paid federal and other taxes of less than 20 percent over the last five years, according to David Leonhardt of The New York Times.'

Rush to Use Crops as Fuel Raises Food Prices and Hunger Fears

Elisabeth Rosenthal, The New York Times News Service: 'The starchy cassava root has long been an important ingredient in everything from tapioca pudding and ice cream to paper and animal feed. But last year, 98 percent of cassava chips exported from Thailand, the world's largest cassava exporter, went to just one place and almost all for one purpose: to China to make biofuel. Driven by new demand, Thai exports of cassava chips have increased nearly fourfold since 2008, and the price of cassava has roughly doubled.'

Koch Industries, Keystone XL Pipeline ... a BP on the Prairie?

Jeanine Molloff, Truthout: 'As the race to develop domestically produced fuels hits a fevered pitch, especially as a reaction to the tensions in the Middle East, politicians from the president on down are seeking a 'magic pill' that will solve our energy problems. President Obama promised a 'green revolution,' with hints at promising wind and solar energy sources during the campaign, but has now done one of his famous backtracks as he pushes the idea of 'clean coal.' One of the alleged 'clean coal' sources his administration has placed under serious consideration is 'bituminous coal' (aka 'unconventional petroleum deposit'), or simply put ... 'tar sands.' Tar sands are plentiful in the US and Canada, but environmentally treacherous to mine and transport - yet, this is the 'green energy' the Obama administration has leaned toward - with heavy prodding from its most threatening political enemy, Koch Industries - disputed founders of the Tea Party movement.'

Energy kills plants, plankton, and people. It imperils the environment, poisons the oceans, and is threatening to turn part of Japan, one of the most advanced nations on the planet, into a contaminated zone for decades to come.'

Kritik an den Kosten des Libyen-Einsatzes

http://www.heise.de/tp/blogs/8/149618

--------

8. April 2011

War: The Republicans real priority

Future of Freedom Foundation

In their 'Pledge to America,' House Republicans promised 'to stop out-of control spending and reduce the size of government.' But other than promising to repeal Obamacare, no specific mention is made in the Pledge about eliminating any federal department, agency, or commission. Indeed, the Republicans? stated ambition was merely to 'roll back government spending to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout levels'...

The hypocrisy at the heart of the police state

The police state, existing as it does in a country in which the officially encouraged self-perception is still heavily influenced by the mythos of the common law and the 'freeborn American,' must engage in ideological legerdemain for its own survival. Thats not to say the propaganda has to be sophisticated enough to pass serious scrutiny or convince a skeptic. It just has to be good enough to fool most of the people most of the time...

'The Peasants Need Pitchforks'

Robert Scheer, Truthdig: 'The delusion of a classless America in which opportunity is equally distributed is the most effective deception perpetrated by the moneyed elite that controls all the key levers of power in what passes for our democracy. It is a myth blown away by Nobel Prize winner Joseph E. Stiglitz in the current issue of Vanity Fair. In an article titled 'Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1%' Stiglitz states that the top thin layer of the superwealthy controls 40 percent of all wealth in what is now the most sharply class-divided of all developed nations: 'Americans have been watching protests against repressive regimes that concentrate massive wealth in the hands of an elite few. Yet, in our own democracy, 1 percent of the people take nearly a quarter of the nations income - an inequality even the wealthy will come to regret.'

UK to press US over abuse, torture of Wikileaks suspect Bradley Manning

Albany Democrat Herald

04/05/11

British diplomats will press the United States anew over concerns about the militarys treatment of a U.S. Army private suspected of supplying thousands of sensitive files to WikiLeaks. The Foreign Office said Tuesday it first contacted the U.S. last month about the conditions under which 23-year-old Bradley Manning was being held at a Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Virginia, but officials would make a new approach after Mannings plight was discussed by British lawmakers...

The Nowhere Man

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: 'So, yeah, Obama is in. The President of the United States officially threw his hat into the 2012 election ring on Monday morning, and the nation reacted with a resounding, 'Oh.' What a mess. It wasnt even two and a half years ago. Can you believe it? Two and a half years ago, there was a detonation of optimism that echoed across the country once the returns were in on that November night. People took to the streets here in Boston, literally banging pots and pans together as they danced and shouted in celebration ... Hindsight, however, tells us today that much of that optimism was wildly misplaced. The long shadow of George W. Bush still hung low and dark over the land, as it does even now.'

American Militarism and the End(s) of Higher Education

Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: 'As the spirit of a hypermilitarized America bleeds into everyday life, politics increasingly becomes an extension of war, and right-wing, liberal and conservative politicians eagerly embrace a militaristic approach to policy and the need to cleanse the social order of any institution, mode of dissent, social group and public sphere willing to question its state of permanent war and its militarized and unchecked embrace of economic Darwinism. These foreign and domestic wars are not unrelated, given that they are waged in the interests of right-wing militarists, neoconservatives, liberals and corporate moguls - all of whom have a political and economic stake in such military incursions abroad and wars at home.'

Pity the poor imperial executive

Independent Institute Independent Institute

04/04/11

Oh, the poor imperial presidency. It has every right and power in the world to detain people forever, and to try them in military commissions without traditional due process. This, after all, is a 'unique executive branch function.' Yet it is such a delicate flower, that poor, beleaguered executive branch, that some fellow Democrats and Congressional Republicans are capable of forestalling its efforts to bring about justice through their insistence on 'scoring political points.' Poor, poor Obama. He can bomb Libya without even giving a nod to Congress, but he cant bear to stand up to his own party when they criticize him for doing the (relatively) right thing...

Since May 2009, when President Obama first bowed to Republican pressure on national-security issues and abandoned a plan by White House Counsel Greg Craig to rehouse on the U.S. mainland a couple of cleared prisoners at Guantanamo who were at risk of torture if repatriated, it has been apparent that no principles are sufficiently important to the administration that officials wont jettison them the moment that critics start howling...

Bury the Nuclear Renaissance Once and For All

Dr. Brian Moench, Truthout: 'It is common rhetoric that US reactors are much better designed - a half truth at best. In 1986, Chernobyl 4 was state of the art and its lid was stronger than domes covering some plants in the US. Soviet engineers pronounced it meltdown proof, and that, even if the worst happened, the lid would hold. Because of their older design, a meltdown in many US reactors would release far more radiation than Chernobyl. Numerous close calls have occurred among the aging US reactors in addition to our own Three Mile Island accident. High cancer and infant mortality rates in Pennsylvania, especially Dauphin County, defy the common belief that no one died at Three Mile Island.'

French fraud behind Libya war drive

Antiwar.com
by Justin Raimondo

04/06/11

The Libyan war has the French, of all people, in the forefront, with President Nicolas Sarkozys smug, self-satisfied face mugging for the camera as French fighter jets scream in the skies over Tripoli. The French, who sat out the Iraq war with haughty disdain, are now even more eager than the Americans to get into the thick of it: Sarkozy, in trouble at home, is hoping to distract critics from Frances ever-worsening domestic economic woes and his own partys diminishing electoral prospects, with a good old-fashioned dollop of Napoleonic tonic. France -- once again thrusting into North Africa in search of its former imperial glory! Its enough to make one nostalgic for the Ugly American...

Republicans' Budget Declares War on Medicare

Lindsay Beyerstein, The Media Consortium: 'The Republicans are poised to unveil a model budget on Tuesday that would effectively end Medicare by privatizing it, Steve Benen reports in the Washington Monthly. House Budget Committee Chair Paul Ryan (R-WI) is touting the budget as a strategy to reduce the national debt. Ryans plan would turn Medicare from a single-payer system to a 'premium support' system. 'Premium support' is a euphemism for the government giving up to $15,000 per person, per year, to insurance companies to defray the cost of a health insurance policy. As Benen points out, privatizing Medicare does nothing to contain health care costs.'

Do You Think the Poor are Lazy?

Even if you said 'No,' the way we talk about wealth assigns moral superiority to the rich. Terms like 'the wealth gap' obscure basic truths about inequality, casting it as a natural economic function. Inequality is really a barrier made to keep others out. We can dismantle it, starting with our words.

Schlecht bezahlte Leiharbeiter verrichten in Atomkraftwerken oft wichtige Arbeiten.

If you are (or wanna be) middle class ?

Our Future Blog
by Dave Johnson

For most people the 'American Dream' is to be in the middle class, or to raise yourself up to be in the middle class. And people used to expect that things would get better over time for all of us. But today more people are going the other way. Many people are finding it harder just to get by and stay even, and expect that things will get even worse for their kids. This is because more and more and more of the income is going to few and fewer and fewer people. This is called income inequality and it affects almost all of us in a bad way...

Libya: West showcases new weapons for sale

MSNBC

04/04/11

Almost every modern conflict from the Spanish Civil War to Kosovo has served as a test of air power. But the Libyan operation to enforce U.N. resolution 1973 coincides with a new arms race - a surge of demand in the $60 billion a year global fighter market and the arrival of a new generation of equipment in the air and at sea. For the countries and companies behind those planes and weapons, theres no better sales tool than real combat. For air forces facing cuts, it is a strike for the value of air power itself...

We Are One: Remembering Martin Luther Kings Struggle for Labor Rights

Michael Honey, History News Network: 'People across the country today are protesting the Republican attempts to utterly destroy the unions. They are virtually the only group that still has the power to stand up against the power of organized money. King supported unions from his earliest college days and called them the 'first anti-poverty program.' Unions provided King with staunch allies and provided his greatest financial support in the Montgomery bus boycott, the Birmingham movement, the March on Washington, and other battles.'

The metrics, so say President Obama, the Wall Street Journal, and A Prairie Home Companion, are not good. The stock markets may have weathered the storm of the recession, as have the country's corporate profit margins, but unless jobs can be found, we wave goodbye to America the Beautiful...

Dr. Wilmer J. Leon III, Truthout: 'If one studies Dr. King s speeches and writings and understands the context of their time, the reality is that Dr. King was not about politics; he was about policy. He was not about elected positions and presidents; he was about people. Dr. King was not about tax breaks for the wealthiest of us; he was about social programs for the least of us. He was not about a war in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Libya. He saw '... war as an enemy of the poor ...' and attacked it as such.'

Pocket change in Washington

Authority!
by Timothy J Taylor

Five million dollars is pocket change to the U.S. government. If a million dollars in 100 dollar bills were dropped in the middle the House floor tomorrow, none of the Congressmen would bother stooping to pick any of it up. They no longer think seriously in terms of millions of dollars, or hundreds of millions. Now it?s billions, and hundreds of billions; even trillions...

Republican hypocrisy on budget cuts

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Laurence M. Vance

03/28/11

With the national debt fast approaching $15 trillion, no member of Congress of either party, and no American citizen of any political persuasion, would argue against the proposition that the federal budget needs to be cut, and cut drastically. The Congressional Budget Office is forecasting a $1.5 trillion budget deficit for fiscal year 2011, giving us the third straight year of trillion-dollar budget deficits...

Obamas policies full of 'hope'

Freedom Politics
by Thomas J. Lucente Jr.

During the 2008 election, Barack Obama made more than 500 promises, if the website PolitiFact.com is to be believed. According to PolitiFact, which is a project of the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, Obama has broken 40 of his campaign promises, compromised on 41 others and 70 have stalled. He has kept 134, or 26 percent, of his promises. The rest are either in the works or not rated...

Defense and the deficit

The American Prospect
by Ben Adler

04/01/11

You might think that with the Iraq War thoroughly discredited and recent polls showing that a majority of the public favors reducing defense spending, cutting the Pentagons bloated budget would finally be on the table. Or at least you'd expect Democrats would propose cutting military spending instead of home-heating subsidies for the poor. But you'd be wrong...

You can pay your bills or you can be a global policeman, but you cant do both

Oh what a lovely budget item

Reason Reason
by Jesse Walker

04/01/11

When Bill Kristol endorsed Americas intervention in Libya, the Weekly Standard editor was being completely consistent with everything else he has said about American foreign policy. He just wasnt being consistent with his pose as a proponent of fiscal restraint. Its bracing to watch Kristol twirl so easily from denouncing 'the Democrats' orgy of spending' and complaining about Republicans who 'don't have a credible plan to deal with the debt or the deficit' to jubilating that the president 'didnt shrink from defending the use of force.' But the pundit's gyrations cant obscure a basic reality: You can pay your bills or you can be a global policeman, but you can't do both. Not in 2011...

The Arab Awakening, hijacked?

Antiwar.com Antiwar.com
by Justin Raimondo

04/04/11

Western attempts to hijack the Arab Awakening are necessarily limited to those countries -- few in number -- where Washington isnt allied with the local tyrant. From the steppes of Central Asia, where US-supported potentates sit atop a growing proportion of the worlds oil supply, to the mouth of the Mediterranean, the American eagle has sheltered dozens of emirs, kings, and presidents-for-life under its overstretched wings. If the US winds up trading Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, and some of the Gulf states for Libya and possibly Syria, thats a net loss by any accounting...

Libya, the un-humanitarian intervention

Fox News Forum
by Rich Lowry

04/02/11

If President Obama's pro-Libyan War advisers wanted to create a precedent for future U.N.-sanctioned humanitarian interventions, they should have found some other war. First, for all the talk of an Obama doctrine, Obamas rationale for the war is so narrowly tailored, it basically only applies to Libya in these particular circumstances. If were going to intervene only when we can get overwhelming international support, respond quickly and with relative impunity, and notionally hand over operations to someone else immediately, thats going to mean most every conflict fails to meet the Obama test...

Occupying the world

04/02/11

What we are observing in Libya is the rebirth of colonialism. Only this time it is not individual European governments competing for empires and resources. The new colonialism operates under the cover of 'the world community,' which means NATO and those countries that cooperate with it. NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was once a defense alliance against a possible Soviet invasion of Western Europe. Today NATO provides European troops in behalf of American hegemony...

'The Matrix' as ruling class

Liberale et Libertaire
by dL

03/31/11

From a purely economic standpoint, class theory and 'Ruling Class' lack coherence. But from an institutional standpoint, there is coherence. We can borrow from popular culture to denote this model as 'The Matrix.' And to recast Orwell, 'the Matrix' is composed of a ruling class whose objective is not necessarily wealth, but domination and a persistence of a world-view, a persistence of the hierarchical structures of the ruling class (it doesn?t matter who wields the power; as long as the institutions, the hierarchies remain unchanged)...

Button pushing or abdication: Which?

Since LeFevre and voluntaryists hold that aggression is wrong they realize it is a wrong means which will never lead towards individual freedom. We cannot use the weapons of tyranny; for freedom and reason are our only tools. One should never have to labor towards compelling others to accept freedom. One need only exert self-control, so as to not interfere with the freedom of others...
