The Right Policies Are the Right Politics

Dave Johnson, Campaign for Americas Future: 'Every poll shows that the public wants the same thing that economists say we need: increases in spending on the things that grow our economy, cuts in military and tax increases on the rich and big corporations (2/3 of which pay no taxes at all) - the very items that are 'off the table' in the budget negotiations!.. How bad are our negotiators, when the public is solidly behind the right thing to do,and they are negotiating with a starting position that is the opposite of good policy and public demand?'

Labor Pains and the GOP

Michael Winship, Truthout: 'Radical Islam and global terrorism may have replaced World Communism and the Cold War as the threats lurking under every bed and behind each closet door but organized labor is the conservative bugbear that keeps on giving, no matter which international conspiracy is busily undermining the republic... The fact remains that labor is nowhere near the nefarious force of iniquity they would have you think it is.'

592 Americans Have Died in Afghanistan Since President Obama Announced the Surge

Zaid Jilani, ThinkProgress: "America remains a nation at war, and it's important for Americans to understand the cost of its longest war in history, in Afghanistan... It is the toll among human beings that is the most incalculable. As troops deaths fail to be reported in the major media, icasualties.org continues to track the deaths among American and coalition forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan. According to its well-sourced data, 592 American soldiers have fallen in battle in Afghanistan since President Obama announced the surge of American troops in that country on December 1, 2009.'

Koch Operative May Have Deceived Officials to Take $2.7 Million in Taxpayer Money for Governors Race

Steve Lebowitz and Lee Fang, ThinkProgress: 'In 2008, Steve Lonegan, the New Jersey state director for David Koch's Americans for Prosperity group, announced a campaign to run for governor. Running as a Republican, Lonegan lost to Chris Christie (R-NJ) in the Republican primary, and Christie went on to win the general election later in 2009. But recent tax disclosures examined by ThinkProgress reveal that Lonegan, who used $2.7 million in taxpayer matching funds for his gubernatorial campaign, may have deceived public officials in order to collect the public money used for his campaign.'

Unemployment for African-Americans Rises, Despite Job Growth

Dean Baker, Center for Economic and Policy Research: 'The economy added 216,000 jobs in March, pushing the overall unemployment rate down to 8.8 percent. The employment-to-population ratio (EPOP) also edged up to 58.5 percent - the highest ratio since September - although this is still 4.4 percentage points below the pre-recession peak.'

How the US Strengthens Al Qaeda in Yemen

By Sara Jerving

In efforts to target Al Qaeda members in Yemen, the US has unintentionally weakened President Ali Abdullah Salehs regime. Most dangerous are its use of bombing operations, which have killed civilians, important tribal figures and members of the Yemeni government.

Den Atomausstieg auf rechtsstaatliche Grundlage stellen

1. April 2011

How many times do we have to arm one side of a civil war -- only for that side to then become our Enemy five or ten or fifteen years later -- before we learn not to do that any more? I wrote earlier on Twitter, ironically, that one good outcome from arming the Libyan rebels is that it will lay the foundation for our new war 10 years from now -- when Commander-in-Chief George Prescott Bush or Chelsea Clinton announce that we must wage war to stop the Libyan faction from threatening its neighbors and supporting Terrorism (with the weapons we provided them back in 2011)...

Japan: Erdbeben 2011

In dem Beitrag 'Tsunami and Nuke Plant Blasts is no natural disaster! Its a crime committed by State, Capital and Submissive Labor Union Leadership!' des International Labor Solidarity Committee of Doro-Chiba am 29.

Das wird in dem Beitrag 'Libya: A Squalid Protectorate That the West Is Going to Create' von Tariq Ali am 29.

What the Patriot Act does for you

Antiwar.com Antiwar.com
by Philip Giraldi

03/31/11

The Patriot Act is generally promoted as the principal legislative tool being used to fight international terrorism. It is, in reality, a devastating and poorly conceived bit of legislation originally approved just after 9/11. It will soon be up for an extension in the US Senate. President Barack Obama, who criticized it while he was a candidate but apparently has had a change of heart since that time, favors its renewal. Most members of Congress, few of whom have ever read the entire act, want it renewed. The mainstream media likes it because who can resist patriotism? That is the bad news. But there is also some good news...

Why they hate us

Independent Institute
by Anthony Gregory

03/29/11

Foreigners should be forgiven if they resented 'the American people' far more than they actually do. Most of us seem to care nothing of the atrocities committed in our name. Even worse, many of us actively support the politicians and military who bring these horrors to other people. We implicitly celebrate these acts of slaughter in parades for veterans. We 'support our troops.' We name streets and buildings after presidents who ended the lives of literally millions of innocent people. In the name of humanitarianism abroad, we enlist the help of a state that jails without trial, claims the right to do anything to anyone on earth, and has tortured hundreds or thousands of detainees to death...

Representative McDermott: GOP Cuts to Anti-Poverty Programs Are 'Morally Wrong' and 'Fiscally Stupid'

Pat Garofalo, ThinkProgress: 'The current continuing resolution under which the federal government is operating expires on April 8, and at the moment, it seems that budget talks between House Republican leadership and Senate Democrats have broken down. Republicans want their spending bill - H.R. 1 - to 'serve as a starting point for all negotiations' (even though Democrats have now upped the amount of spending cuts they're willing to pass, alongside zero concessions from Republicans).'

Main Street Moves Against Wall Street

Richard D. Wolff, Richard D. Wolff's Blog: At last, the first signs that politicians are heeding popular anger at the austerity measures imposed to pay for bankers' greed. When the current economic crisis hit, the Obama campaign blew away Bush and McCain by promising hope, change and a solution that would overcome this crisis and prevent future crises. Likewise, some governments in Europe came to power based on public fear reacting to the global meltdown. Ongoing crisis, mass economic pain and deepening public anger keep shifting political winds.'

The Buying and Selling of the Pentagon

Part I

Dina Rasor, Truthout: 'With the DoD budget ballooning again and again over the past 40 years and the news yesterday that we have already spent $600 million in the first week in defending Libya from the air, there appears to finally be some movement to look into what is wrong with our defense spending. We have fired 191 cruise missiles at a cost of $288 million alone ($1.5 million per missile) - just one illustration on how we have spent too much for our weapons, and the Pentagon has admitted that it is unauditable and cannot successfully track most of its procurement money.'

Beta spike in California. BBC recklessly endangers life

From Radnet data
https://cdx.epa.gov/SSL/cdx/EPA_Home.asp

It appears that there has been a sudden increase in beta radiation in California today (30th March 2011). We are not able to say what has caused it. We hope to do some analysis tomorrow, Thursday 31st, and see what Radnet data show then. See the LLRC site http://www.llrc.org for the graph. We bring you this information so people on the western seaboard of the Americas can take the elementary precaution of staying indoors. We hope this is a false alarm but it is prudent to assume it is not.

Earlier we posted that the BBC is recklessly endangering people by ridiculing people for taking Iodine tablets as a precaution against radioactive pollution. On Monday 28th March Material World - a regular Radio 4 science programme - featured Professor Robin Grimes, Director of the Centre of Nuclear Engineering at Imperial College, London. He sneered at Californians for taking stable Iodine (the stable Iodine fills up the thyroid gland so it can't absorb Iodine 131). He added that it was not necessary even for people in Tokyo. He said: I believe people in California are buying Iodine tablets and things like that which is completely, completely crazy. However there will be people close to the [Fukushima] plant who should be taking that [Iodine] as a precaution and they are being told to do so; that's being dealt with in a sensible manner but [for] people in - say - as far away as Tokyo that would not be necessary at this point in time - not even close.

Mindful that after Chernobyl increased thyroid cancer was observed in Britain as well as Russia, LLRC's current advice is that people in Japan definitely ought to be taking stable Iodine; California is borderline (or it was borderline when we uploaded) In the UK it's probably unnecessary at present. However, as the UK Health Protection Agency agrees, there are no risks associated with Iodine tablets so long as the dose is not grossly exceeded. There is no argument against taking them as a precaution. Grimes' remarks can only be seen either as ignorant or as just one more attempt to play down the hazard of nuclear power.

US Attorney Stuart Smith of environmental and personal injury specialists Smith Stag told LLRC Grimes' advice would, if followed, increase risks with possibly fatal conseqences, especially for children. People would be justified in prosecuting him, his employers and the BBC for recklessly endangering life. Stuart Smith's law firm is a pioneer in the field of Technologically Enhanced Radioactive Materials and oilfield waste litigation. The UK has no law of reckless endangerment but in USA and Scotland among other countries it is a criminal offence to put lives at risk through an action or by failing to act.

LLRC's Secretary Richard Bramhall said: BBC producers seem to have forgotten that they are required to balance the expression of opinions on controversial issues. On radiation and health the BBC is institutionally unbalanced, routinely allowing 'experts' like Professor Grimes to claim that only 50 deaths are attributable to Chernobyl without reference to the countervailing evidence. The 'Horizon' documentary 'Nuclear Nightmares' in 2006 was an outstanding example. My complaint eventually led the BBC Trust to rule 'Nuclear Nightmares' was biased. I hope the threat of a class action in California or Japan will concentrate minds a bit. The Material World broadcast is the first item on this listen again link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00zm31w/Material_World_24_03_2011 , which is scheduled to be on the BBC web site until Friday.

LLRC supports the Nuclear Information and Resource Service Grassroots Platform for Nuclear Safety and Security http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5502/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=6195 . It calls for the radiation risk model of the European Committee on Radiation Risk http://www.euradcom.org to replace the International Commission on Radiological Protection - as LLRC has long recommended. The wisdom and legality of arming Libyan rebels

If the U.S. wants to arm the rebels, it will do so regardless of whether it violates any U.N. arms embargo, and few supporters of this war - most of whom justify it by pointing to these U.N. Contrary to the Presidents Speech, Removal of Qaddafi Is the Military Objective

Robert Naiman, Truthout: "The most important content of presidential speeches is often what they don't say. Here are some things that President Obama didn't say about Libya in his speech last night. The president did not answer his critics who asked why he took America into war without authorization by Congress. This question was made sharper on Sunday when Jake Tapper of ABC asked Defense Secretary Gates, 'Do you think Libya posed an actual or imminent threat to the United States?'

Last night, nine days after we began bombing Libya, President Obama went on television to explain what were up to and what the plan is. Its always nice to be kept in the loop. But the real outrage here isnt that Obama ? for once ? has been reluctant to make a speech. It's that our Nobel Peace Prize-winning, former constitutional law professor president has launched yet another war in the Middle East without any constitutional authority for doing so...

Our misguided faith in strength

'What if US military force were proportionately more like that of other nations? ... Our military would still be strong enough not only to defend the United States from attack, but also to deter attacks in the first place. The 'Obama Doctrine,' Libya and Iran

The Nation Blog
by Robert Dreyfuss

03/29/11

Does Libya set a precedent? If a revolt breaks out again in Iran, and the regime cracks down with brutal force, will the United States support a Libya-style response? The New York Times, in its coverage of Libya, is already talking about imposing a no-fly zone against Syria. Is there an 'Obama Doctrine' emerging? It looks like it. And, unfortunately, it seems focused on the idea of humanitarian interventionism, with some add-ons and codicils, that make it broader than that...
