A Rich Fantasy Life

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "I know I should be immune to this by now, but I still find myself awestruck by the incredibly detailed, insulated fantasy world that the American conservative 'movement' has created for themselves. No lie is too big to be told, no fact is too firm to be bent around ideology, no myth is too absurd to defend to the knife. The ability to spew deliberate nonsense into the credulous ears of Fox-watching right-bent voters - and to be utterly without shame while doing it - is the core of this 'movement's' political muscle, and has been for a number of decades now."

Assange lawyer: Sweden acted improperly in probe

Wikileaks Yuma Sun

02/08/11

The man famous for leaking thousands of secret U.S. military and diplomatic documents just spent two days in court fighting extradition to Sweden and criticizing prosecutors there for allegedly leaking his name to the media in a sex crimes inquiry. No one in court acknowledged any irony in Julian Assange's efforts to seek the protection of confidentiality...

Torturing Democracy

Henry A. Giroux, Paradigm Press: "Since the turn of the twenty-first century, we have lived through a historical period in which the United States relinquished its tenuous claim to democracy. The frames through which democracy apprehends others as human beings worthy of respect, dignity, and human rights were sacrificed to a mode of politics and culture that simply became an extension of war, both at home and abroad. At home, the punishing state increasingly replaced the welfare state, however ill conceived, as more and more individuals and groups were now treated as disposable populations, undeserving of those safety nets and basic protections that provide the conditions for living with a sense of security and dignity. Under such conditions, basic social supports were replaced by an accelerated production of prisons, the expansion of the criminal justice system into everyday life, and the further erosion of crucial civil liberties."

Obama Walks in the Wrong Direction

Jim Hightower, Truthout: "As part of his odd and demeaning determination to hug up America's avaricious corporate powers, President Obama walked across Lafayette Square on Feb. 7 to enter the imperial gates of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and show deference to the business establishment. Apparently, his ongoing obsequiousness is an effort to woo corporate donors and show conservative voters how moderate he can be. George Bush Cuts and Runs From Torture Case in Switzerland

Vincent Warren, Truthout: "Apparently, former president George W. Bush does 'cut and run.' On February 7, 2011, two torture victims were to have filed criminal complaints for torture against Bush in Geneva. Bush was due to speak there at a charity gala on February 12. On the eve of the case filing, Bush abruptly canceled his trip, choosing instead to attend the Super Bowl in Dallas. Why would he rather be in Dallas than in Geneva? For one thing, Swiss authorities are under a legal obligation to start a preliminary criminal investigation if a torturer is on Swiss soil. But, thanks to Attorney General Eric Holder's refusal to apply US law to investigate torture, Bush isn't even breaking a sweat in Dallas - or anywhere in the US, for that matter."

While the drama of revolution plays out across Egypt, the capitols of former and current western imperial powers are abuzz with activity. Much of this activity is focused on preventing the success of the Egyptian uprising by replacing the man Hosni Mubarak with another agent of those powers. The top name in the hat at this time appears to be Egypt's torture chief and recently appointed vice president Omar Suleiman. As most observers of the region know (and as has been reported in media around the world) Suleiman's history includes assisting in renditions, torture and operating the Egyptian internal security apparatus...

Five reasons why Arab regimes are falling

The Christian Science Monitor
by Moataz A. Fattah

02/08/11

Public protests in Egypt are not about minor changes or grievances. President Hosni Mubarak?s regime faces a deep process of legitimacy erosion ?- the same pattern of legitimacy erosion that exists across much of the Arab region. This erosion won?t simply go away with more protests or new governments, and it will be with us in the years to come. Understanding the larger societal and demographic factors eroding these regimes is vital to understanding the unrest in the Middle East and how the Arab world can move forward...

Ideology vs. the national interest

The American Conservative
by Patrick J. Buchanan

02/07/11

Hosni Mubarak has been a loyal ally. He kept the peace with Israel and helped keep weapons out of Gaza. He fought beside us in Desert Storm and stands with us in the War on Terror. But he is also an autocrat who rules a regime where state and army are virtually one and where the opposition is squelched, when it is not imprisoned. If a democratic Egypt is America?s goal, we will push for the removal of Mubarak, for the army to go back to the barracks, and for parliamentary and presidential elections where all parties participate. But before we do this, we should be on notice what a democratic Egypt, where the government reflects the will of the people, may look like...

But promoting those three principles will serve our nation well in supporting the Egyptian people and engaging whatever government they ultimately choose. The same is true here at home...

Should You Pay Your Mortgage?

Learning To Walk: Fear, Shame And Your Underwater Mortgage

How Banks and Investors are Starving The Third World

By Ellen Brown

In poorer countries, as much as 60 to 80 percent of people's incomes go for food, compared to just 10 to 20 percent in industrial countries. An increase of a dollar or so in the cost of a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread for Americans can mean starvation for people in Egypt and other poor countries.

Egypt's military-industrial complex

The cozy relationship between the lobbyists, members of the US Congress, Pentagon officials and the Egyptian government is easily explained: much is at stake.

Hosni Mubarak and American foreign policy

Breaking All The Rules Breaking All the Rules
by SARTRE

02/07/11

The sands of time sweep once again over the Egyptian kingdom. Hosni Mubarak is just one more in a long line of autocrats. A Pharaoh he is not. A tin horn dictator, beholding to the regal Yankee, is a more apt description. It is difficult to embrace or have sympathy for a regime that traded rendition torture for a steady flow of military and foreign aid. Mubarak, like all favored despots, has no qualms of conscience when it comes to following orders, from a higher imposing force. Now he is paying the price of being a collaborator of the American Empire...

Recognizing the Language of Tyranny

Chris Hedges, Truthout: "Empires communicate in two languages. One language is expressed in imperatives. It is the language of command and force. This militarized language disdains human life and celebrates hypermasculinity. It demands. It makes no attempt to justify the flagrant theft of natural resources and wealth or the use of indiscriminate violence. When families are gunned down at a checkpoint in Iraq they are referred to as having been 'lit up.' So it goes. The other language of empire is softer. It employs the vocabulary of ideals and lofty goals and insists that the power of empire is noble and benevolent."

Vermitteln zum Verfassungsbruch

7. Februar 2011

One wrong conclusion being drawn from the popular uprising against the dictatorship in Egypt is that the American government could ignore such things if we were 'energy independent.' (It?s unclear if this means independent of Middle Eastern oil or completely independent.) A moment?s reflection should be enough to jettison that thought, but even if oil were all that?s at stake, energy independence would be a terrible idea. It?s perplexing that self-described free-market advocates would favor such a policy...

The Conservative Class War Continued

Eric Alterman, The Nation: "Can it be mere coincidence that the right-wing media promoted this phony-baloney story at a moment when, as Charles Loveless, legislative director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, points out, conservatives are 'readying a massive assault' on the pensions and benefits of these same employees? Led by Newt Gingrich, conservatives are floating the notion that states should be allowed to declare bankruptcy to escape their pension obligations to firefighters, cops, teachers and, yes, sanitation workers. The assault on public employee unions is the next phase of a forty-year class war in America by the rich against the rest of us. It is of a piece with the steady dismantling of our progressive taxation system and the explosion of economic inequality."

Kucinich Requests to See Bradley Manning

Kucinich Requests to See Bradley Manning, Soldier in Solitary Confinement for Alleged Leaks

Zaid Jilani, ThinkProgress: "Last May, the military arrested Private First Class Bradley Manning, a military intelligence officer who had served overseas in Iraq, over charges that he was involved in leaking numerous classified documents and videos to the Wikileaks whistleblowing group, including a video of a U.S. attack helicopter killing numerous unarmed journalists. Since his arrests, numerous civil liberties groups and investigative journalists have protested the conditions under which Manning is being held, noting that he has been kept in solitary confinement and is denied even access to a pillow or bed sheets. This is particularly shocking in light of new information revealed that Manning was suspected of having poor mental health before he was deployed to Iraq, with some superiors even requesting that he not be given firearms.... Now, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates inquiring about Manning?s condition, protesting the Army?s treatment of him, and requesting a visit with the imprisoned solider."
