The combination of expiring tax cuts and unemployment benefits, spending cuts, and tax increases, all scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2013, has been termed the 'fiscal cliff.' To make matters worse, the debt ceiling of $16.394 trillion, the maximum amount of money the government is legally allowed to borrow, may be reached before the end of the year. The self-inflicted drama of the 'fiscal cliff' is playing out in Washington like a Greek comedy or tragedy, depending on how much you know about economics. In preparation for appearing on CNN, I read the Congressional Budget Office reports, which are like Ambien in ledger form. To sum up: We have made promises and increased spending to a level that we cannot sustain, and this must be addressed. Aside from more than $16 trillion in debt, now 100 percent of our GDP, it is estimated that with Medicare and Social Security we have $99 trillion in pending, unfunded obligations...

The Republicans claim to want to maintain the current tax rates on all income earners, and the Democrats claim to want to maintain the current tax rates on the bottom ninety eight percent of income earners. The offer from the Democrats is that if this tax increase is granted, then there will be unspecified spending cuts at some future date. Both sides are lying so badly that it is surprising anyone is able to take their claims seriously...
