Defense Spending: The Worst Way to Make Jobs

Dina Rasor, Truthout: 'I see it coming. As President Obama gives his speech on how important it is for the government and the country to produce more jobs, and as the budget noose starts to tighten on all government programs, including the Department of Defense (DoD) this time, the DoD will flood the Congress with charts and statistics on how cutting the DoD will also cut important defense manufacturing jobs across the US. Each member of Congress will be notified about how many jobs will be cut for any given weapon system, and this is especially effective because the DoD has become the master of spreading weapon production contractor and subcontractor jobs across as many districts and states as possible to get the weapons funded in the first place.... As we drawdown troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, the defenders of the DoD budget, which unfortunately includes the new Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, will want to transfer any money saved back into their favorite endeavor: weapons production.'

Obama Transition Team Member Explains Why Administration Chose Not to Prosecute Torture

David Swanson, War Is a Crime: 'If you can think back all the way to January 2009, back when wars were ending, Guantanamo was closing, the Pentagon was getting oversight, employees were going to have free choice, the rich would start paying taxes, the air would be getting cleaner, and so forth, you ll recall that the Obama transition team was acting super populist and high-tech. They had questions from ordinary people for the President Elect submitted on their website and voted up or down. The top question at the end of the voting had come from Bob Fertik of and it was this: 'Will you appoint a Special Prosecutor - ideally Patrick Fitzgerald - to independently investigate the gravest crimes of the Bush Administration, including torture and warrantless wiretapping?' (Bob Fertik, New York City) Not only was the answer no, but it had to be inferred because President Change U. Wish refused to answer the question.... However, we now have an account from someone involved in the decision process way back when.'

No Surprise Here: A New Scandal at News Corporation

Paul Krugman, Krugman & Co.: 'I see that the Murdoch empire is facing another scandal - this time involving misleading advertisers rather than readers, by inflating circulation numbers.... So the Murdoch people lie routinely about politics and policy; they breach all normal rules of conduct by hacking into people s phones. They really should curb their proclivities when it comes to advertisers - I mean, truth and justice are disposable, but this is business!'

British Panel Finds Murdoch Unfit to Lead Media Empire

John F. Burns and Alan Cowell, The New York Times News Service: ''In a damning report after months of investigation into the hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch s British newspapers, a parliamentary panel here concluded on Tuesday that he was 'not a fit person' to run a huge international company, amplifying a public outcry against him, but threatening further bruising divisions within the political establishment.''

Rupert Murdoch May Be a Convenient Demon, but the Media Is a Junta

John Pilger, Truthout: ''Although [Murdoch] is now one of the West s accredited demons, thanks to his phone-hackers, he is but part of a media system that will not change when his empire is broken up.... A Melbourne journalist, Paul Chadwick, one of the few to rebel against Murdoch, described the media climate as 'akin to a small group of generals who sit above the main institutions ... a junta in all but name.'''

Staying in Iraq for what?

The Obama administration wants to keep troops in Iraq. Never mind that pre-President Barack Obama criticized the war. Never mind that Uncle Sam s annual budget deficits exceed $1 trillion. The long life of profiling

The Nation
by Moustafa Bayoumi

On August 24, the AP broke the news that the CIA and the NYPD are combining forces to spy on Muslims in New York City. Since the CIA is prohibited by law to collect intelligence on American citizens, this is more than newsworthy. It s probably unconstitutional, which explains why the NYPD has, according to the report, kept these activities secret. This is no ordinary program, nor does it seem to be merely about sharing expertise...

Inequality the real cause of terrible economy

Our Future Blog
by Robert B. Reich

The 5 percent of Americans with the highest incomes now account for 37 percent of all consumer purchases, according to the latest research from Moody s Analytics. That should come as no surprise. Our society has become more and more unequal. When so much income goes to the top, the middle class doesn t have enough purchasing power to keep the economy going without sinking ever more deeply into debt - which, as we have seen, ends badly...

The Price of 9/11

Joseph E. Stiglitz, Project Syndicate: 'The September 11, 2001, terror attacks by Al Qaeda were meant to harm the United States, and they did, but in ways that Osama bin Laden probably never imagined. President George W. Bush s response to the attacks compromised America s basic principles, undermined its economy, and weakened its security. The attack on Afghanistan that followed the 9/11 attacks was understandable, but the subsequent invasion of Iraq was entirely unconnected to Al Qaeda - as much as Bush tried to establish a link. That war of choice quickly became very expensive - orders of magnitude beyond the $60 billion claimed at the beginning - as colossal incompetence met dishonest misrepresentation.'

Toward Total Information Awareness

Nancy Murray and Kade Crockford, Truthout and ACLU Massachusetts: 'It is no secret that the CIA, FBI and the National Security Agency (NSA) bungled a multitude of opportunities to foil the 9/11 plot. There were no fewer than 12 intelligence reports in the three years preceding 9/11 that Osama bin Laden planned to use aircraft as weapons and crash them into buildings in Washington and New York City, information that was included in the president's daily intelligence brief. In addition to the 2004 report by the 9/11 Commission, the often astonishing list of intelligence failings that contributed to the success of the attacks has been exhaustively documented.... In his minority report to the Joint Intelligence Committee, Alabama Republican Sen.. Richard Shelby urged agency leaders to be held accountable for the litany of failures. This was never done. Instead, well before the public was alerted to the extent of the multiple intelligence failures, the government embarked on a 'fix' that bore little relation to the actual shortcomings outlined in the reports.'

Let s Cancel 9/11: Bury the War State s Blank Check at Sea

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch: 'Ask yourself this: ten years into the post-9/11 era, haven t we had enough of ourselves? If we have any respect for history or humanity or decency left, isn t it time to rip the Band-Aid off the wound, to remove 9/11 from our collective consciousness? No more invocations of those attacks to explain otherwise inexplicable wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and our oh-so-global war on terror. No more invocations of 9/11 to keep the Pentagon and the national security state flooded with money. No more invocations of 9/11 to justify every encroachment on liberty, every new step in the surveillance of Americans, every advance in pat-downs and wand-downs and strip downs that keeps fear high and the homeland security state afloat. The attacks of September 11, 2001 were in every sense abusive, horrific acts. And the saddest thing is that the victims of those suicidal monstrosities have been misused here ever since under the guise of pious remembrance.'

Our war on the politics of fear

by Mick Hume

Contrary to what we have been told a thousand times over the past decade, and particularly this week, 9/11 was not ?the day that changed the world?. No act of terrorism alone, even one as bloody as the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001, could ever do that. What 9/11 and, more importantly, the fear-driven responses to it did was to confirm that the world had already changed, and to act as a further catalyst accelerating the end of the old political order...

The meaning of September 11

by Ramsi Kyzia

U.S. violence in Afghanistan and Iraq has destabilized vast populations of human beings who were already living inside of unacceptable catastrophes. Violence has built walls between those peoples and ours, enflamed prejudices and injustice, entrenched persecutions and created fears leading to increased hatreds, depression and despair. This is the central truth that lies at the heart of all violence - the brutal severing of human ties and emotions, the destruction of our human spaces...

Libya Next Fight: The West

Ramzy Baroud, The Palestine Chronicle: 'Listening to upbeat statements by rebel military commanders, and optimistic assessments of National Transitional Council members, one gets the impression that the future of Libya is being entirely formulated by the new Libyan leadership. Arab media, led by Al Jazeera, seemed at times to entirely neglect that there was a third and most powerful party involved in the battle between freedom-seeking Libyans and the obstinate dictator. It is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, whose decisive and financially costly military intervention was not charitable, nor was it a moral act. It was a politically and strategically calculated endeavor, with multifaceted objectives that simply cannot be scrutinized in one article.'

CIA Push for Drone War Driven by Internal Needs

Gareth Porter, Inter Press Service: 'When David Petraeus walks into the Central Intelligence Agency Tuesday, he will be taking over an organization whose mission has changed in recent years from gathering and analyzing intelligence to waging military campaigns through drone strikes in Pakistan, as well as in Yemen and Somalia. But the transformation of the CIA did not simply follow the expansion of the drone war in Pakistan to its present level. CIA Director Michael Hayden lobbied hard for that expansion at a time when drone strikes seemed like a failed experiment. The reason Hayden pushed for a much bigger drone war, it now appears, is that it had already created a whole bureaucracy in the anticipation of such a war.'

Help Stop Troy Davis' Execution Now

We have just received terrible news: The state of Georgia has set Troy Davis's execution date for midnight on September 21st, just two weeks from today.

This is our justice system at its very worst, and we are alive to witness it. There is just too much doubt.

Even though seven out of nine witnesses have recanted their statements, a judge labeled his own ruling as 'not ironclad' and the original prosecutor has voiced reservations about Davis's guilt, the state of Georgia is set to execute Troy anyway.

Time is running out, and this is truly Troy s last chance for life.

But through the frustration and the tears, there is one thing to remain focused on: We are now Troy Davis's only hope. And I know we won't let him down.

There are three steps you can take to help Troy:

1. Send a message of support to Troy as he fights for justice on what may be the final days of his life:

2. Sign the name wall, if you haven't already. And if you have, send it to your friends and family. Each name means a more united front for justice:

3. Make sure everyone knows about this injustice. Spread the word on Facebook and Twitter (using the hashtag #TooMuchDoubt) so that Troy Davis's story can be heard. We still have a chance to save his life, but only if people are willing to speak out against injustice.

Today, the state of Georgia has declared their intention to execute a man even though the majority of the people who put him on the row now say he is innocent and many implicate one of the other witnesses as the actual killer. Now that a date has been set, we cannot relent. We must redouble our efforts.

Thank you. Please act quickly and forward this message to all who believe the justice system defeats itself when it allows a man to be executed amid so much doubt.

How to Help Troy Davis

Oppose the Death Penalty for Troy Davis

A Murder in Georgia

Robert Wilbur, Truthout: 'On Tuesday, September 6, a Chatham County Superior Court judge put the final stamp on a 19-year battle to save the life of an innocent man from Georgia s executioner. On that date, Judge Penny Freeseman signed a death warrant for Troy Anthony Davis, setting his execution between September 21 and September 28; the exact date will be decided by Georgia s Department of Corrections.... The American system of justice turned a deaf ear to Davis, year after year, appeal after appeal. Seemingly, it is more important to demonstrate that the system 'works' rather than that it unmasks the truth - no matter that the price is going to be the life of an innocent man, especially a black man.'
