Is the White House Up for Grabs?

By Mike Whitney

Obama simply trusted his Wall Street mentors Summers, Bernanke, and Geithner, the trio that sabotaged the recovery while making sure the banks and speculators got as much liquidity (and bailouts) as they needed.

Pakistan for Sale

By Salmana

After the Raymond Davis slap in the face by the American government, we all know Americans (read Americans with diplomatic immunity, since now they probably ALL have it regardless) have no respect for the laws in other countries, especially Pakistan.

We have been sold on a false premise, and, as Noam Chomsky would say, have allowed the manufacture of our consent.

The Bernanke Scandal: Full-Frontal Cluelessness

Robert Scheer, Truthdig: 'How I wish that Ben Bernanke would get caught emailing photos of his underwear-clad groin. Otherwise we dont stand a chance of reversing this administration s economic policy, which is shaping up to be every bit as disastrous as that of its predecessor. Indeed, the Fed chairman s much anticipated remarks on Tuesday take one back to the contemptuous indifference of a Herbert Hoover to the public s suffering: Bernanke dismissed the wobbly economy with its anemic 1.8 percent first-quarter growth as merely 'somewhat slower than expected.' The rise in unemployment to 9.1 percent was 'some loss of momentum.' The problem with Bernanke is that he is utterly clueless as to the stark pain and fear endured by the 50 million Americans who have experienced, or face the prospect of, losing their homes.'

Ron Paul vs. the GOP Establishment
by Justin Raimondo

[A] wave of 'anti-government' (i.e. pro-freedom) sentiment is sweeping the country, and the realization that libertarians were the original tea-partiers - coupled with the electoral success of that populist upsurge - has the Establishment in a panic. What we re seeing is a two-pronged, left-right attack on libertarians, with the initial forays in the foreign policy realm. The main thrust of the attack is naturally directed at the leader of the libertarian movement, the man who has done the most to make libertarianism a significant political force in the modern world, and that man is Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas)...

Six More Years: U.S. General Wants to Train Afghans Until '2017'

There once was a time when President Obama implied that the Afghanistan war would at least start to end in July 2011. Then that date got pushed back to 2014. Now, the general in charge of training Afghan forces to take over for departing Americans pegs that date closer to 2016 or 2017.

The American Empire Must Be Stopped

By Scott Horton

Occupying Iraq, State Department-Style

Peter Van Buren, TomDispatch: 'From that ancient debris field, recall the almost forgotten run-up to the American invasion, the now-ridiculous threats about Saddam Hussein s weapons of mass destruction, Secretary of State Colin Powell lying away his own and America s prestige at the U.N., those 'Mission-Accomplished' days when the Marines tore down Saddam s statue and conquered Baghdad, the darker times as civil society imploded and Iraq devolved into civil war, the endless rounds of purple fingers for stage-managed elections that meant little, the Surge and the ugly stalemate that followed, fading to gray as President George W. Bush negotiated a complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq by the end of 2011 and the seeming end of his dreams of a Pax Americana in the Greater Middle East. Now, with less than seven months left until that withdrawal moment, Washington debates whether to honor the agreement, or - if only we can get the Iraqi government to ask us to stay - to leave a decent-sized contingent of soldiers occupying some of the massive bases the Pentagon built hoping for permanent occupancy.'

$3 billion more down the toilet in Iraq

by Timothy J Taylor

We have occupied the place for nearly 10 years and our diplomats cant even peek out from the bullet proof windows of their Green Zone fortresses without mortal fear of being blown away by a rocket propelled grenade. Now we learn that, after the $3 1/2 trillion we have already thrown into the s... quagmire of Iraq, the U.S. State Department is going to spend another $3 billion before we leave the H... hole at the end of this year to hire a security force solely for the protection of U.S. diplomats...
