Swing-State Ohio at Heart of Union Rights Battle

Paul West, The Los Angeles Times: 'In this chapter of the national struggle between unions and a new wave of GOP governors, most of the passion now is with organized labor, battered by an industrial shakeout that slashed its Ohio ranks by more than one-third in recent decades. Those losses would have been more severe were it not for the strength of public employee unions, which now represent a majority of unionized workers. Statewide polls show that voters would roll back the new law if the election were held today. But even those who think Republicans face an uphill fight expect it to be close. The governor, in an interview, expressed confidence that attitudes will shift once his side s media drive cranks up.'

Guantanamo Detainees Stage Hunger Strike to Protest Confinement Conditions

Jason Leopold, Truthout: 'Within the past month, more than 15 Guantanamo detainees protested an indefinite detention order signed by President Barack Obama in March that resulted in their relocation to another camp at the prison facility - where they said the conditions are worse - by staging a hunger strike, Truthout has learned. Two detainees involved in the hunger strike have lost about 25 pounds, according to their attorneys. Tanya Bradsher, a Department of Defense (DoD) spokeswoman, confirmed detainees staged a hunger strike, but she put the number at 'less than ten.'

Mercury Dangers

This eye-opening video from the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT.org) is worth more than a thousand words when it comes to illustrating the very real danger of mercury fillings. It contains a powerful visual demonstration of how mercury vapors are released into your oral cavity every time you chew, visit the dentist, or drink hot tea or coffee, for example.

Who is the real reactionary?

CounterPunch
by Charles Davis
04/28/11

Ron Paul is far from perfect, but I'll say this much for the Texas congressman: He has never authorized a drone strike in Pakistan. He has never authorized the killing of dozens of women and children in Yemen. He hasn't protected torturers from prosecution and he hasn't overseen the torturous treatment of a 23-year-old young man for the 'crime' of revealing the government's criminal behavior. Can the same be said for Barack Obama?

Who does Obama want to be when he grows up?

The American Prospect
by Jamelle Bouie

04/28/11

Obama clearly envisions himself as a two-term president in Reagan s mold, and wants his tenure to be as central to liberals as Reagan s was to conservatives. But, as much as the president might like to compare himself to Reagan, he should be mindful of a slightly more recent Republican president: George H.W. Bush...

The Ron Paul Revolution continues

by Seth King

04/27/11

Ron Paul s success will not come in the form of winning an election. His message has been, and always will be, directed towards the remnant. And the truth is that we are the remnant. We are the ones who are going to have to pick up the pieces after society self-destructs. And if you have made it this far you know that the next system we build will not be predicated on coercion. It will be built on voluntarism...

Yemen: Is US Aid Suppressing Another Mideast Freedom Struggle?

Nick Turse, TomDispatch: 'Last December, 26-year-old Tunisian fruit-seller Mohammed Bouazizi set himself on fire in front of a local municipal office, touching off popular protests that continue to sweep across the Middle East and North Africa. By the end of January 2011, the country s US-backed dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali had fled and demonstrations, which would eventually also topple corrupt autocrat and long-time US ally Hosni Mubarak, had broken out in Egypt. In Yemen, as is the case elsewhere in the region, anger at government corruption, rampant poverty (40% of all Yemenis live on less than $2 a day), high unemployment (also running at 40%), and decades of harsh rule by an authoritarian strongman brought tens of thousands into the streets.'

Arrogance and Authority

Simon Johnson, Project Syndicate: 'The real cost of the crisis is not measured by the profit and loss statement of any central bank - or by whether or not the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), run by the Treasury Department, made or lost money on its various activities. The cost is eight million jobs in the US alone, with employment falling 6% from its peak and - in a major departure from other post-1945 recessions - remaining 5% below that peak today, 31 months after the crisis broke in earnest. The cost is also the increase in net federal government debt held by the private sector - the most accurate measure of true government indebtedness.'

The budget mess: A crisis in legitimacy

Reality has finally caught up with the ruling elite, and its members inside and outside government are in a panic. They have freely spent the taxpayers? money for generations building a corporatist warfare-welfare state, and when that wasn?t enough to finance their projects, they borrowed just as freely. For a long while it paid off handsomely in power and wealth, but now even they realize things can?t go on as they have for so long...

Krieg gegen Gewerkschaften

The Oil Company Gusher

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: 'Exxon-Mobil s first quarter earnings of $10.7 billion are up 69 percent from last year. That s the most profit the company has earned since the third quarter of 2008 - perhaps not coincidentally, around the time when gas prices last reached the lofty $4 a gallon. This gusher is an embarrassment for an industry seeking to keep its $4 billion annual tax subsidy from the US government, at a time when we're cutting social programs to reduce the budget deficit. It s especially embarrassing when Americans are paying through their noses at the pump.'

Wisconsin s 'Capitol City' Was Testing Ground for Participatory Democracy

Ryan Harvey, Truthout: 'That was before the Wisconsin State Capitol building was occupied and several large wildcat strikes and student walkouts brought thousands into the streets. Soon, all fourteen Democratic senators would flee the state and the largest demonstrations in Wisconsin s history would bring international attention to the antiunion agenda behind the bill. I came to Madison and slept in the Capitol for five nights during the occupation. I wanted to get a clear understanding of the movement s depth, capacity and commitment. I traveled back more recently to get the story of how the occupation came to be, how it was organized, how people have reflected on it since and the role it has played in the mass movement here.'
