Rand Paul (R-KY) began the filibuster Wednesday morning amid the nomination of John Brennan as the next director of the CIA. When Rand Paul mounted his epic filibuster last week, he focused almost 13 hours of rhetoric on President Obama s targeted killing program. 'Can drones kill Americans on U.S. soil?' Sen. Paul asked. It was a worthy subject for an extended debate. But the filibuster was significant for another reason. Besides honing in on the specifics of targeted killing, his attention-grabbing speech served as a demonstration project for civil libertarians, who have struggled ever since the 9/11 terror attacks to protect the Constitution. Just think of all the questions it helped to answer. Could an ambitious Tea Party champion from the South make common cause with a progressive Oregon Democrat? Yes!
