The Corporate Conquest of America

Thom Hartmann, Berrett-Kohler Publishers: 'While corporations can live forever, exist in several different places at the same time, change their identities at will, and even chop off parts of themselves or sprout new parts, the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, according to its reporter, had said that they are 'persons' under the Constitution, with constitutional rights and protections as accorded to human beings. Once given this key, corporations began to assert the powers that came with their newfound rights..... Interestingly, during the era of the Santa Clara decision granting corporations the full protections of persons under the Constitution, two other groups also brought cases to the Supreme Court, asking for similar protections. The first group was women. This was a movement with a fascinating history, its roots in the American Revolution itself.'

Theres a scene in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock that I find useful at times like this. Dr. McCoy is trying to arrange covert passage to a star system declared off-limits by the Federation Council. McCoy asks an alien pilot what it would cost to transport him there. The alien replies that since the system is 'restricted,' it would take money and 'many permits.' McCoy replies, 'There arent going to be any damn permits! How can you get a permit to do a damn illegal thing?!' This is basically my reaction to all the hand-wringing over Barack Obamas decision to attack Libya without first obtaining a congressional declaration of war...

Just what is this Koch Industries? Should it be called a 'company?' If so we need to re-think the idea of what a company and a business is supposed to be. Even the brother of Koch Industries owners David and Charles Koch called the company an 'organized crime' operation. Koch money is a key driver of the conservative movement. Almost every conservative-movement rock you turn over has Koch money crawling around under it. As the movement becomes more and more of a pay-to-play operation conservatives of every stripe do more and more to protect and enrich the Koch operation...

Kucinich: Obama could be impeached for attacking Libya

The Raw Story

03/21/11

'Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) says President Barack Obama did not have the constitutional authority to order U.S. forces to participate in an attack on Libya. In a conference call with other liberal lawmakers Saturday, Kucinich asked why the U.S. missile strikes were not impeachable offenses, according to two Democratic lawmakers who spoke to Politico. The U.S. unleashed a barrage of strikes against the Libyan regimes air defenses over the weekend, but ruled out using ground troops in what Obama called a 'limited military action.'

U.S. Rep. Peter Kings recent hearing on the domestic radicalization of Muslims was an act of misdirection. While King, a New York Republican, no doubt exaggerates this phenomenon, he might as well have held a hearing on why objects drop when let go. The answer is obvious. The violence the U.S. government inflicts on the Muslim world is the source of hostility to America. If it?s true of people in the Middle East and North Africa, why wouldn?t it also be true of Muslim Americans?

Kill Public-Employee Unions; Erase the Middle Class

Dmitri Iglitzin and Carson Glickman-Flora, Truthout: 'Its not like we didnt see it coming. At the very start of this year, January 2, The New York Times warned us of the coming battle with a front-page story, 'Public Workers Facing Outrage in Budget Crisis.' The Economist, in its January 8 issue, gave us, 'The battle ahead: confronting the public-sector unions.' And the January Time Magazine, 'Public Employees Become Public Enemy No. 1.' So, nobody should have been surprised when public employees became enemy No. 1 in Wisconsin, whose governor and Republican-dominated Legislature are pressing a bill that would eviscerate most of the unions representing that state's employees.'

Unionize Everybody!

Michael I. Niman, ArtVoice: 'Unions fought for and won fundamental rights that we all now take for granted - things ranging from child labor and minimum wage laws to lunch breaks and the 40 hour week. And as union wages increased, so did non-union wages, since union contracts raised the wage floor in our free market for labor. As long as union jobs offered better pay and benefits, they would attract better workers, which worked out well for unionized businesses. In order to compete to hire qualified workers, non-union businesses had to match union wages and benefits. Some of us paid union dues, but all of us reaped the benefits those dues bought. The union effect balances the profit-wage equation. Take it away, and the equation tips back toward the radical social inequity of the 19th century and the period right before the Great Depression. And this is what is happening. As the wage floor increased, the need for individuals to join unions decreased.'

Congress Must Debate the Libya War

Robert Naiman, Truthout: 'The US is now at war in a third Muslim country, according to the 'official tally' (that is, counting Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, but not Pakistan or Yemen, for example.) But Congress has never authorized or debated the US military intervention in Libya. (A sharply disputed claim holds that the Pakistan and Yemen actions are covered by the 2001 authorization of military force, but no one has dared to argue that the 2001 authorization to use military force covers Libya.) Some will no doubt claim that the president is acting in Libya within his authority as commander in chief. But this is an extremely dangerous claim.'

The newest fad in foreign intervention is the slim-line approach. I swear, it really is like fashion news. A few years ago, the neocons were pushing a full-figured style of intervention, which ended up with us wasting hundreds of billions of dollars and thousands of American lives in Iraq. Since that went so badly, the fashion has swung the other way, and the same idiots who brought you Iraq are pushing for a smaller, smarter style of intervention that leans on small groups of special-forces troops and covert operations. ... The notion of not intervening, period, never enters the neocons? heads...

Libya should be Europes problem, not America?s

The recent upheavals in Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya demonstrate the impact of political instability in that region on the EU?s Mediterranean flank -- and why Europe should take the lead in any international resolution to the problem. At this point, in proper Democratic Party militarism form, the initial intervention will be in the form of No-Fly zones, air patrols. It was the same pattern for Clinton in both Iraq and in the former Yugoslavia. Eventually ground troops were sent in to both, with Clinton sending troops in to Bosnia and Bush sending troops in to Iraq. If Obama holds true to the pattern of other pro-war Democrats, ground troops are only a matter of time. Then the US will be embroiled in yet another war of occupation...
