New Yorkers Rage Against the Cuts

Kanya D'Almeida, Inter Press Service: 'As the contagious effects of democratic uprisings radiate from North Africa to North America, New York Citys exploited workers and students are not about to let the opportunity for mass struggle pass them by. The 'Day of Rage Against the Cuts' has been in the works for over four months, one of the protests organizers told IPS, ever since New York's recently appointed Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo openly declared his intention to slash spending on public education and healthcare and lacerate the budget previously allocated to state agencies by over half a billion dollars in order to close an estimated budget gap of $10 million.'

Demokratie. Streikverbot.

Confining Manning and Falling Into the Outer Darkness

Kieran Manjarrez, Woodchipgazette: 'For a brief moment, Decembers WikiLeaks scandal caused us to remember the forgotten Private Bradley Manning who was arrested in June 2010 and to this very day languishes in a perpetually lit white box, forbidden virtually all sentient stimulation or social contact... For two decades, extreme isolation and depersonalization have been standard and routine features in the American Gulag. The effects of these regimens both on individuals and on constitutional standards of justice are devastating.'

Housings Double Dip

Libyan Rebel Commander Admits his Fighters Have Al-Qaeda Links

By Praveen Swami, Nick Squires and Duncan Gardham

Abdel-Hakim al-Hasidi, the Libyan rebel leader, has said jihadists who fought against allied troops in Iraq are on the front lines of the battle against Muammar Gaddafis regime.

Libyan 'Revolutionaries' Arent So Revolutionary

By Against the Empire

I am amazed at the police state that they have designed and who is in power in Benghazi. It was no doubt a complete error on the part of so-called 'progressives' to take the side of these rebel forces (never mind those who hailed them as 'revolutionaries').

Coalition strikes kill 114: Libya official

Mr Omar said 104 people were killed in Tripoli and the suburbs between Sunday and Wednesday, while 10 were killed in Sirte, the hometown of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, some 600 kilometres south of the capital.

The Daily Mail can reveal there are an estimated 350 already mounting covert operations. The troops in Libya were drawn from a squadron of SAS and SBS personnel, some who have been in the country for a month and are being re-supplied with water, food and ammunition via airdrops from Cyprus.

John McCain Was In Favor Of Supplying Military Aid To Gaddafi

In August 2009 he led a delegation of senators, including fellow hawks Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman, on a trip to visit the Libyan leader in Tripoli. Discussed during the visit was delivery of -- get this -- American military equipment to Gadhafi (a man with American blood on his hands no less).

Toxic Intervention: Are NATO Forces Poisoning Libya With Depleted Uranium as They 'Protect' Civilians?

Dave Lindorff, This Cant Be Happening: 'President Obamas criminal launch of an undeclared and Congressionally unauthorized war against Libya may be compounded by the crime of spreading toxic uranium oxide in populated areas of that country... Images of Libyan civilians and rebels celebrating around the burning hulks of the Libyan armys tanks and armored personnel carriers, which had been hit by US, French and British aircraft ordinance in the early hours of the US-led assault on the forces of Col. Muammar Gaddafy, could well have been unknowingly inhaling the deadly dust of the uranium weapons favored by Western military forces for anti-tank warfare.'

What Can Afghanistan and Pakistan Teach Us About Nonviolence?

David Swanson, WarIsACrime.org: "I was never even taught the name Badshah Khan. Were you?.. Khan was a Pashtun, or Pathan, as are many members of the Taliban today... Khan, like Gandhi, taught the elimination of anger and fear, and the dominance of strength, love, and courage. Khan opposed passivity, and advocated fighting with the most powerful weapon available: nonviolence... And, as people learn from those who have gone before, it is entirely possible that most of what Khan achieved has yet to happen. In fact, we are all in a lot of trouble if that does not prove true. Unless ignoring and bombing Libya, for example, are not the only two conceivable options, violence will be the end of us all.'

Bradley Manning Treatment Reveals Continued Government Complicity in Torture

Marjorie Cohn, American Constitutional Society: 'Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, who is facing court-martial for leaking military reports and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks, is being held in solitary confinement in Quantico brig in Virginia. Each night, he is forced to strip naked and sleep in a gown made of coarse material. He has been made to stand naked in the morning as other inmates walked by and looked. As journalist Lance Tapley documents in his chapter on torture in the supermax prisons in The United States and Torture, solitary confinement can lead to hallucinations and suicide; it is considered to be torture. Manning's forced nudity amounts to humiliating and degrading treatment, in violation of U.S. and international law. Nevertheless, President Barack Obama defended Mannings treatment.'

Why Governor LePage Cant Erase History

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: 'Maine Governor Paul LePage has ordered state workers to remove from the state labor department a 36-foot mural depicting the states labor history.... Are we still in America? The current Republican assault on workers - on their right to form unions, on unemployment insurance and Social Security, on public employees, and even (courtesy of Governor LePage) on our common memory - is ... despicable. And it?s why we need a President who will fight for workers and fight against this assault - just as Perkins and FDR did.'
