Obama goes to war

The American Conservative The American Conservative
by Patrick J. Buchanan

03/28/11

In ordering air and naval strikes on a country that neither threatened nor attacked the United States, did President Obama commit an impeachable act? So it would seem. For the framers of the Constitution were precise. The power to declare war is entrusted solely to Congress. From King Williams War to Queen Annes War to King Georges War to the Seven Years? War, the colonists had had their fill of royal wars. To no principle were they more committed than that the power to declare war must be separate from the power to wage it. And Obama usurped that power...

Gaddafi may well be every bit the 'bad guy' we are told he is, but who are the rebels we are assisting? Do we have any clue? Will they bring freedom and prosperity to Libya if they are victorious? We might like to hope so, but the fact is, we don't know...

The Libya folly

Constitutionality and selective memory aside, the president was wrong to order the attacks on Libya for three reasons. First, it?s not clear whos in charge of Operation Odyssey Dawn .... Second, whats the objective? ... Third ? and most importantly ? even if the previous two questions are properly addressed, they would be trumped by the fact that U.S. national security is not at stake in Libya...

The New American Dream

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: 'If you are wealthy, you are living in the Golden Age of your American Dream, and it's a damned fine time to be alive. The two major political parties are working hammer and tong to bless you and keep you. The laws are being re-written - often by fiat, and in defiance of court orders - to strengthen the walls separating you and your wealth from the motley masses. Your stock portfolio, mostly made by and for oil and war, continues to swell. Your banks and Wall Street shops destroyed the economy for everyone except you, and not only did they get away with it, but were handed a vast dollop of taxpayer cash as a bonus prize.'

http://www.truth-out.org/the-new-american-dream68847

Banding Together for the Common Good

Thom Hartmann, Berrett-Koehler Publishers: 'American revolutionaries Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, and decades later even the French observer Alexis de Tocqueville, fretted about a return to America of a despotic government running roughshod over the rights of citizens. Few, however, seriously considered the possibility of corporations rising up to take over the people of the world and then to take control of the peoples governments. It was only after he had left the presidency that Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1816 about the rise of power of the 'moneyed corporations.'

http://www.truth-out.org/banding-together-common-good68845

The Collapse of Globalization

Chris Hedges, Truthdig: 'The uprisings in the Middle East, the unrest that is tearing apart nations such as the Ivory Coast, the bubbling discontent in Greece, Ireland and Britain and the labor disputes in states such as Wisconsin and Ohio presage the collapse of globalization. They presage a world where vital resources, including food and water, jobs and security, are becoming scarcer and harder to obtain. They presage growing misery for hundreds of millions of people who find themselves trapped in failed states, suffering escalating violence and crippling poverty. They presage increasingly draconian controls and force - take a look at what is being done to Pfc. Bradley Manning - used to protect the corporate elite who are orchestrating our demise.'

Working people are losing when we should be winning. Wall Street, the Koch brothers, greedy CEOs, and the super-rich have seized the economic crisis they created and are exploiting it. They are slashing public budgets; attacking nurses, teachers and firefighters; destroying public employee unions; and cutting healthcare, education, childcare and other critical community programs. Their campaign will intensify as they dedicate themselves to destroying the remaining islands of private-sector union strength ? slashing benefits and pay for all workers. Their goal: lock in their political and economic dominance...

Robert Naiman, Truthout: "The most important content of presidential speeches is often what they don't say. Here are some things that President Obama didn't say about Libya in his speech last night. The president did not answer his critics who asked why he took America into war without authorization by Congress. This question was made sharper on Sunday when Jake Tapper of ABC asked Defense Secretary Gates, 'Do you think Libya posed an actual or imminent threat to the United States?'

Last night, nine days after we began bombing Libya, President Obama went on television to explain what were up to and what the plan is. Its always nice to be kept in the loop. Our military would still be strong enough not only to defend the United States from attack, but also to deter attacks in the first place. The 'Obama Doctrine,' Libya and Iran

The Nation Blog
by Robert Dreyfuss

03/29/11

Does Libya set a precedent? If a revolt breaks out again in Iran, and the regime cracks down with brutal force, will the United States support a Libya-style response? The New York Times, in its coverage of Libya, is already talking about imposing a no-fly zone against Syria. Is there an 'Obama Doctrine' emerging? It looks like it. And, unfortunately, it seems focused on the idea of humanitarian interventionism, with some add-ons and codicils, that make it broader than that...

Mainstream Coverage of WikiLeaks Has Fallen Far Short

Andrew Kennis, Truthout: 'Through interviews with Truthout, experts and members of the public interest community characterized news media coverage of WikiLeaks as being poor, inadequate and more akin to soap opera-ish tabloid coverage rather than serious journalism assessing revelations of US foreign policy abuses. When news coverage was more serious, a friendly frame of reference to successive US administrations was often used, with concerns about the standing of US diplomacy - not its revealed disregard for democratic values - taking front and center.'
