The Muslims are coming!

In These Times
by Salim Muwakkil

04/07/11

In a strange kind of delayed response, the American public seems to be in a more Islamaphobic mood now than it was right after 9/11, when a few Muslim terrorists transformed planes into bombs. Symptoms are everywhere, from widespread opposition to the building of mosques and other Islamic institutions, to congressional hearings amplifying fearful, anti-Islamic voices, to Muslim-oriented surveillance policies, to the use of agent provocateurs to entrap hapless malcontents. The list goes on, but one of the most unlikely avenues of attack is jurisprudence...

The follies of legalism

The American Conservative The American Conservative
by Chase Madar

04/07/11

Suppose that our act of war in Libya is perfectly legal. This is to overlook the absence of congressional authorization, a clear violation of the US Constitution, but let?s leave that aside for now. If our war in Libya is legal does that make this war prudent, effective, benevolent, worthwhile? Does the legality of this war imply a moral obligation to wage it? A little reflection shows that legality in itself is never enough to justify any action...

Emperor Obama

Future of Freedom Foundation Future of Freedom Foundation

04/07/11

Once upon a time, people actually believed that a president could not constitutionally commit troops abroad without a declaration of war by Congress. With some exceptions, that belief held presidents in check for a while. But it passed away sometime after 1942, and since then presidents have gone to war - big-time and small - whenever they damn well pleased. Congress has simply been too timid to assert itself against imperial presidents...

Whatever their differences on domestic and other matters, the neocons and the Obama cult agree on one thing: their mutual disdain for the Constitution. The 'progressives' sniff at 'constitutional fundamentalism,' and the neocons regard Constitution-citing conservatives such as Paul and Lee as 'dogmatists.' They hate the Constitution because it restrains their overweening (if often competing) ambitions, and holds them accountable -- not merely every few years, at election time, but all the time...

So, here we go again. Another president is starting another war in another country that is no threat to us. And our mission will be limited because our goal is not to kill Gadhafi, only to stop him from killing the people who are trying to kill him. Oh yeah, this is going to go great...

Obama has taken a 'profoundly troubling' position on assassinations: ACLU

The Raw Story

04/07/11

Disclosure of government secrets often has little to do with the publics right to know and has everything to do an officials need to tell, according to ACLU deputy director Jameel Jaffer. And thats especially true when it comes to assassinations, which have not traditionally been an openly admitted component of U.S. foreign policy - but the American Civil Liberties Union is cautioning that the Obama administration is changing all of that...

The rich have been getting richer and the poor and the middle class have been getting poorer

Bill Quigley, Truthout: 'The rich have been getting richer and the poor and the middle class have been getting poorer in the US recently. Here are seven examples that show how the US is going through 'Robin Hood in Reverse.' Between 1948 and 1979, the richest 10 percent of families in the US claimed 33 percent of average income growth. Between 2000 and 2007, the richest 10 percent claimed a full 100 percent of average income growth in the US, according to the Economic Policy Institute. Business taxes were cut from 46 to 34 percent 25 years ago, according to ProPublica. But today, 115 of the big 500 companies listed on Standard and Poors stock index paid federal and other taxes of less than 20 percent over the last five years, according to David Leonhardt of The New York Times.'

A Festival of Dumb

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: 'Every time I think Ive seen everything, politically speaking, a new wave of nonsense comes crashing ashore and bowls me right over. Todays installment features a game of budgetary chicken being played among the Tea Partiers in the House, the Democrats in the Senate, and an alarmingly conciliatory Obama administration. If someone doesnt blink by midnight on Friday, the federal government will shut down and a great deal of fresh H... will be unleashed.'

Koch Industries, Keystone XL Pipeline ... a BP on the Prairie?

Jeanine Molloff, Truthout: 'As the race to develop domestically produced fuels hits a fevered pitch, especially as a reaction to the tensions in the Middle East, politicians from the president on down are seeking a 'magic pill' that will solve our energy problems. President Obama promised a 'green revolution,' with hints at promising wind and solar energy sources during the campaign, but has now done one of his famous backtracks as he pushes the idea of 'clean coal.' One of the alleged 'clean coal' sources his administration has placed under serious consideration is 'bituminous coal' (aka 'unconventional petroleum deposit'), or simply put ... 'tar sands.' Tar sands are plentiful in the US and Canada, but environmentally treacherous to mine and transport - yet, this is the 'green energy' the Obama administration has leaned toward - with heavy prodding from its most threatening political enemy, Koch Industries - disputed founders of the Tea Party movement.'

Energy Is Ugly

Ellen Cantarow, TomDispatch: 'Energy is ugly. Some forms more so than others, as nuclear near-meltdowns in Japan, the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, and deaths in a West Virginia Coal Mine explosion have driven home in the last year. Energy kills plants, plankton, and people. It imperils the environment, poisons the oceans, and is threatening to turn part of Japan, one of the most advanced nations on the planet, into a contaminated zone for decades to come.'

Kritik an den Kosten des Libyen-Einsatzes

http://www.heise.de/tp/blogs/8/149618

--------

8. April 2011

War: The Republicans real priority

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Laurence M. Vance

04/06/11

In their 'Pledge to America,' House Republicans promised 'to stop out-of control spending and reduce the size of government.' But other than promising to repeal Obamacare, no specific mention is made in the Pledge about eliminating any federal department, agency, or commission. Indeed, the Republicans? stated ambition was merely to 'roll back government spending to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout levels'...

The hypocrisy at the heart of the police state

04/04/11

The police state, existing as it does in a country in which the officially encouraged self-perception is still heavily influenced by the mythos of the common law and the 'freeborn American,' must engage in ideological legerdemain for its own survival. Thats not to say the propaganda has to be sophisticated enough to pass serious scrutiny or convince a skeptic. It just has to be good enough to fool most of the people most of the time...
