U.S. Could Be Headed for Iraq Redux

By Democracy Now!

Seymour Hersh says the United States might attack Iran based on distorted estimates of Iran s nuclear and military threat-just 'like it did 'with Saddam Hussein s government in Iraq.

By Diana Johnstone

It certainly does not deserve its official title, since it studiously ignores truly 'international' crimes, such as U.S. and NATO aggression or the many massacres of civilians that result.

Despite Intelligence Rejecting Iran as Nuclear Threat, US Could Be Headed for Iraq Redux

Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, Democracy Now!: 'In his latest article for The New Yorker magazine, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh says the United States might attack Iran based on distorted estimates of Iran s nuclear and military threat - just like it did with Saddam Hussein s government in Iraq. Hersh reveals that despite using Iranian informants and cutting-edge surveillance technology, U.S. officials have been unable to find decisive evidence that Iran has been moving enriched uranium to an underground weapon-making center.'

General Keane Keen on Iran Attack

Ray McGovern, Consortium News: 'Celebrating a reunion with close friends of Fordham College (class of 1961) on a perfect June day in New York should be a time of little or no stress. So I should have avoided a long lecture by a retired four-star general from the class of 1966, Jack Keane. Keane, now on Fordham University s Board of Trustees, has been the go-to general for the neoconservatives in recent years. He said he was speaking to us before catching a flight to Europe where he would lobby leaders of the 41 NATO countries who, except for three, have been 'unwilling to ask their people to sacrifice' in places like Afghanistan. (By all indications, Keane has apparently given no thought to the possibility that the Europeans have been far quicker to understand that the war in Afghanistan - aka Vietnamistan - is a fool's errand.)'

Policymakers Have Made Another Depression Unavoidable

By Mike Whitney

If you slash government spending, lay off workers, and trim the deficits, then spending will slow, incomes will shrivel, GDP will wither, and the economy will slip back into recession.

Torture s comeback

The American Conservative
by Chase Madar

06/02/11

The killing of Osama bin Laden should have provoked some healthy debate about our ongoing reaction to the 9/11 attacks. Was this manhunt worth the $3 trillion estimated by National Journal? Does our alliance structure guarantee the creation of more bin Laden-type threats? Has our military response to 9/11 hurt us and others more than it has helped? Instead, the execution of bin Laden has launched a nostalgia craze for torture, whose great virtues, we are told, have been cruelly underappreciated...

A war fit for a king

Reason Reason
by Steve Chapman

06/02/11

[T]he framers stipulated that Congress has the power to 'declare war,' giving it the chief responsibility except when the president needed to act quickly to repel an attack. But in the ensuing centuries, presidents of both parties have often trampled over their original limits, and Congress has usually let them. This has not gone over well with all lawmakers - like the senator who said in 2007 that the president has no right to go to war on his own, barring an actual or potential attack. His name was Barack Obama. But President Obama has thoroughly repudiated the naive and simplistic notions voiced by Sen. Obama. In some ways, he has also been even more aggressive than his predecessors in doing whatever he pleases...

But he s our imperial president!

Cato Institute Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

06/02/11

Sometimes it s hard to remember that the presidency was supposed to be a constitutionally limited office. George Washington didn t imagine himself 'commander in chief of our economy,' in Hillary Clinton s bizarre formulation; our first president doubted that his powers as CINC even allowed him to attack hostile Indian tribes without congressional authorization. Nor did Washington refer to himself by his military title, preferring to call the office the 'chief magistracy,' a far humbler term...
