Massive Justice Department attack on banks?

OpenMarket.org
by Hans Bader

09/02/11

The highly-politicized Obama Justice Department is already suing banks that it perceives as not making enough loans to minorities, and forcing them both to award preferential loans to high-risk borrowers based on race, and to cough up money in 'settlements,' some of which goes to left-wing 'community' groups that are allied with the Obama administration. I earlier questioned the legal logic behind these lawsuits, noting that racial disparities are often not sufficient evidence of discrimination in many areas of the law...

Council of Europe demands truth on CIA 'black sites'

CNN

09/05/11

The human rights commissioner for the Council of Europe urged countries that have hosted secret CIA prisons to come clean Monday, as the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaches. Thomas Hammarberg said Poland, Romania and Lithuania were among at least seven countries that hosted 'black sites' for 'enhanced interrogation' during the 'war on terror'...

Getting Those Republican Attacks Right

Dean Baker, Truthout: 'At this point, Republican politicians are beginning to sound almost like wind-up toys when they complain about job-killing taxes and regulations that keep businesses from hiring. The media should at least do the Republicans and the public the courtesy of attempting to discern if these complaints make any sense. (McClatchy gets high marks for this effort.) If the charges are true, then there are logical implications that can be explored. The media should be taking the time to see whether the evidence is consistent with Republican claims. The tax side of the story is pretty simple. The Republicans are making things up.'

Forbes: Koch Brothers Now Worth $50 Billion

Brad Johnson, ThinkProgress: 'Forbes estimates that Tea Party petrochemical scions Charles and David Koch have a fortune of $25 billion each, making them the fourth richest Americans, behind only Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and Larry Ellison. Their combined wealth of $50 billion is exceeded only by the Microsoft founder s $59 billion fortune. Buoyed by aggressive speculative trading on volatile energy markets, the Koch brothers accumulated $15 billion in wealth since March 2010, a 43 percent increase.'

Taking Back Labor Day - The Great Health Care Takeaway

Amy Dean, Truthout: 'While many would say there is little for working people to celebrate as we approach this Labor Day, I see new hope in the rising number of working people standing up to fight back for themselves and all working-class families. Despite an unprecedented wave of attacks on our country s workers, or maybe because of them, working people across the country have begun to come together and fight back to reclaim their rights and voice in our economic and political debates. If given the chance to truly flourish, this rising fight for true independent political power for working people, whether you are in a union or not, has the potential to repaint the landscape of our economy for the good.'

Busting the Union Busters

Dick Meister, Truthout: 'Probably nothing could be more damaging to the labor movement in general than the attempts by anti-union forces to weaken unions at all levels of government by trying to limit - if not withdraw - their collective bargaining rights and right to strike, in addition to unilaterally cutting the pay and pensions, health care, and other benefits their unions have won in bargaining.'

http://www.truth-out.org/busting-union-busters/1314710822

Postal Workers: The Last Union

Allison Kilkenny, Truthout: 'The recent attacks against the United States Postal Service (USPS) are more than signs of desperate times - a natural sunset moment for a service rendered archaic by FedEx and UPS. Rather, the Postal Service has been under constant, vicious assault for years from the right, who views this as an epic battle with the goal of finally taking down the strongest union in the country, the second-largest employer in the United States (second only to Walmart) and a means to roll the country ever closer toward the abyss of privatization.'

The Great Health Care Takeaway

Shamus Cooke, Truthout: 'Most workers now understand that there is a difference between apparently having health care and actually having health care: if you are technically 'insured,' but cannot afford doctor visits due to high deductibles and co-pays, you really aren't insured. This fact, applied to Medicare, has startling consequences. The New England Journal of Medicine found, 'For every 100 people enrolled in plans that raised co-pays, there were 20 fewer doctor visits, 2 additional hospital admissions and 13 more days spent in the hospital...'

Political class rigs a game it finds threatening

Orange County Register
by George Will

09/23/11

The pleasant sound you hear - the clatter of bad laws crumbling - is the edifice of campaign finance restrictions disintegrating. Washington state provides a fresh example of the exhaustion of the 'campaign finance reform' project, which tries to empower government to restrict speech about the composition and conduct of government. The state law at issue is awful, but usefully awful: It perfectly illustrates how the political class crafts campaign regulations for the purpose of protecting the job security of members of that class: elected incumbents...

Rick Perry: Darling of Bilderberg Group

By now, Republicans, particularly Tea Partiers, as well as many Democrats, have become aware of the threat that the very powerful and elite members of the Bilderberg Group poses to not only to our Representative Democracy but to our economic well being.

In 2007, Perry attended the annual Bilderberg meeting which took place in Istambul Turkey. Since then, he has been following many of the globalist agenda on behalf of these powerful individuals...which has provided credence to Perry being the Builderberg choice for President...as he was in 2007!

Should this come out in the main stream press, particularly FOX News, PERRY WILL BE FINISHED...PARTICULARLY AMONG REPUBLICANS!!!

Unequal Responsibility for Crime

Thom Hartmann, Berrett-Koehler Publishers: 'Every year the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issues a press release on its Uniform Crime Reporting Program, which determines the 'Nation's Crime Index.' It reports crimes by persons - but it excludes corporate persons, even when the corporations have been convicted of felonies. In its entire history, the FBI has never issued an annual report on crimes by corporate persons, although its reports on crimes by human persons are well researched and well publicized. The upshot of this is that when you ask people how most money and property are stolen, or how most people are killed, they think of burglars and muggers and bank robbers and crimes of passion. They think of human persons. The reality, though, is that more money and property are stolen by or lost to corporate criminals than to human criminals.'

Perry Tales: Rick Is Not Who He Says He Is

Jim Hightower, Truthout: 'Presidential wannabe Rick Perry is flitting all around the country - hither, thither and yon - spreading little 'Perry Tales' about himself and the many wonders he has worked as governor of Texas. His top Perry Tale is a creationist story about what he has modestly branded 'The Texas Miracle.' While the rest of the country is mired in joblessness, says the miracle worker, his state has added 1.2 million jobs during his 10-year tenure. I have built 'a job-creating machine,' the governor gushed during one of his recent flits across Iowa, and a Perry PR aide smugly added, 'The governor s job creation record speaks for itself.' Actually, it doesn t.'

Hunger Rate Spikes in Rick Perry s Texas, Even as National Rate Holds Steady

Marie Diamond, ThinkProgress: 'A new report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that household hunger remained steady from 2009 to 2010, even though almost 49 million people - a near record number - were affected by food insecurity. Some states even saw their hunger rates decline. But one glaring exception was the state of Texas, which has been hailed by Gov. Rick Perry (R) as a model for the rest of the nation during these tough economic times.'

Is Perry 'hypocritical? asking for federal aid?

Christian Science Monitor

09/07/11

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, currently a GOP front-runner for next year s presidential nomination, left the campaign trail in South Carolina to return to Texas to command what s become an epic battle against dozens of major runaway wildfires. ... While the wildfires provide an opportunity for the only sitting governor in the presidential race to display his leadership bona fides, the disaster is also leaving Governor Perry open to charges of hypocrisy from the tea party movement. Some small-government advocates are asking why Perry, a states' rights proponent and critic of federal power, is berating the Obama administration for dragging its heels in sending federal taxpayer money and resources to Texas...

Contagion in Rick Perry Texas

I have just purchased tickets to see the new movie Contagion, about a mysterious virus that spreads with deadly havoc around the globe. But after reading this article by the Los Angeles Times, I am realizing that the real health horror story is not coming from Hollywood but from Texas. That is where we are getting a real-world example of what conservative health care looks like, and what the entire country is likely to experience if conservatives succeed in dismantling healthcare reform.
