Do the wealthy look to you like the victims of class warfare?

Class Warfare Indeed

'Class' is used with impunity and approval only when it has that magic neutralizing adjective 'middle' attached to it.

Murder Is Good Politics, Bad Justice

Robert Scheer, Creator s Syndicate: 'The most egregious argument for capital punishment is the claim that the finality of officially condoned killing is a necessary guarantor of civilized order. It s egregious because it is not possible to make that case without explaining why most of the democratic societies that we admire shun the death penalty as contrary to their most deeply held values. Or is it China, Iran, North Korea and Yemen - which, along with the United States, lead the world in government executions - that we most admire? There s something stunningly disgraceful about the company we keep on this issue.'

Conservatives Say It Out Loud: They Hate Democracy

Dave Johnson, Campaign for America s Future: 'The roots of today s toxic conservative movement lie in Ayn Rand s teaching that wealthy 'producers' - now called 'job creators' - should be left alone by the government, namely the rest of us. The rest of us are 'freeloaders,' 'moochers,' 'leeches' and 'parasites' who feed off these producers and who shouldn t be allowed to make decisions to collect taxes from them or regulate them or interfere in most other ways. The Randians hate democracy, and say so, declaring that 'collectivism' sacrifices individual rights to majority wishes.'

Occupy Wall Street Is More Than a Hashtag: It is Revolution in Formation

Nathan Schneider, Truthout: 'A lot of what you have probably seen or read about the #occupywallstreet action is wrong, especially if you are getting it on the Internet. The action started as an idea posted online and word about it then spread and is still spreading, online. But what makes it really matter now is precisely that it is happening offline, in a physical, public space, live and in person. That's where the occupiers are assembling the rudiments of a movement.'

Uncertainty and the death penalty

Rough Ol' Boy
by John Payne

09/22/11

Davis was convicted, and his appeals went through the proper channels, so according to those, such as Rick Perry, who sleep soundly in the confidence that the government has never executed an innocent man, he must be guilty. You see, our government doesn t kill innocent people. Other countries may do that sort of thing, but our justice system is above all that, so there s no need to examine the massive piles of evidence that show it regularly makes mistakes...

Moral progress and arguments against the death penalty

The Moral Sciences Club
by Will Wilkinson

09/22/11

We can talk about the nature of moral progress later. It s tricky. For now, I want you to entertain the possibility that convergence toward the idea that execution is wrong counts as evidence that it is wrong. This would suggest that those American states yet to abolish the death penalty are cases of arrested development. Looking at these trends, it seems overwhelmingly probable that we will look back on the death penalty as a shameful bit of lingering of savagery. And we won t be wrong...

And justice for all?

CounterPunch
by Anuja Saunders

09/25/11

The case shines a bright light on to the workings of the American justice system. Why does this powerful, civilized, industrial nation still have a medieval definition of justice? ... And let s be clear, it is about revenge. The notion that it in any way acts as a deterrent has been debunked by one study after another...

The Truth About 'Class War' in America

Richard D. Wolff, Truthout: 'Republicans and conservatives have done us a service by describing federal policies in terms of 'class war.' But by applying the term only to Obama s latest proposals to raise taxes on the rich, they have it all backward and upside down. The last 50 years have indeed seen continuous class warfare in and over federal economic policies. But it was a war waged chiefly by business and conservatives.'
