Die arktische Meereisdecke ist im zurückliegenden Jahrzehnt nicht nur geschrumpft, sondern auch deutlich jünger und dünner geworden. Wo früher meterdickes, mehrjähriges Eis trieb, finden Forscher heute vor allem dünne, einjährige Schollen, die in den Sommermonaten großflächig mit Schmelzwassertümpel bedeckt sind. Meereisphysiker des Alfred-Wegener-Institutes, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung (AWI) haben nun erstmals die Lichtdurchlässigkeit des arktischen Meereises großflächig vermessen und dabei diese Veränderung in Zahlen fassen können. Ihr Ergebnis: Überall dort, wo sich Schmelzwasser auf dem Eis ansammelt, dringt viel mehr Sonnenlicht und somit Energie in das Eis ein als an wasserfreien Stellen. Die Folge: Das Eis schmilzt schneller und der Lebensraum im und unter dem Eis erhält mehr Licht.

Schwarzer Kohlenstoff, auch Ruß genannt, beeinflusst den Klimawandel deutlich stärker als bislang angenommen. Er ist sogar nach Kohlendioxid (CO2) der zweitgrößte Klimakiller, mit dem der Mensch zur globalen Erwärmung beiträgt. Das hat eine internationale Forschergruppe herausgefunden, an der auch das Forschungszentrum Jülich beteiligt ist. Ihre Erkenntnisse werden in den kommenden UN-Klimareport IPCC einfließen und könnten zugleich neue Möglichkeiten eröffnen, die globale Erwärmung zumindest kurzfristig zu verlangsamen.

Das Ost-Antarktische Eisschild scheint durch die Klimaerwärmung mehr gefährdet zu sein als bisher angenommen. Ein internationales Forschungsteam der Universitäten Durham und Zürich hat zum ersten Mal die langzeitliche Entwicklung von Auslassgletschern mittels Satellitenbildern untersucht.
